Luke Underhill has fulfilled different roles with PWF. He is a songwriter whose lyrics have been recognized for their depth and wordplay. But this is not the only thing that he does. In addition to creating songs, Underhill has done a lot to produce the band’s music, add to the fascinating aesthetic they are building, and create charming, engaging music.
Playing With Fireworks is becoming recognized for a unique nostalgic flair, specifically, an aesthetic that draws from the 80’s and offers a distinctive sense of style that doesn’t quite match other works that also focus on this era. Some many unique bits and elements feel sweet and engaging, which Underhill himself describes as being candy, just in audio format, to be enjoyed through the ear and not through the tongue.
PWF is also a band that is doing a lot to offer their audience impressive, striking live performances. In addition to the music, which works quite well on its own, this is an outfit that is really investing time and effort into the visual elements of its productions. We had the pleasure of interviewing the artist. Here are the excerpts from the Interview:
Hi, please introduce yourself and tell us about what it is that you do.
My name is Luke Underhill, and I am the frontman for Playing With Fireworks (PWF).
Can you please tell us more about your journey?
I got the music bug early on when I was 6 or 7 sitting in the backseat of my dad’s car as he cranked out Springsteen songs. Then I remembered the first time I saw Angus Young playing guitar with AC/DC, and I thought to myself, “I want to do that.” So, I learned guitar and then piano. Fast forward, I started recording music when I was 15 years old. Eventually, I had the opportunity to work with producers like Mikal Blue and Warren Huart. I had more of a singer/songwriter vibe back then. But, I wasn’t completely satisfied with that route, and I noticed that my music wasn’t matching up with the sound I heard in my head. So, I built my own studio and took everything that I had learned from my experiences with producers like Mikal and Warren and made the music exactly as I heard it in my head. That’s how Playing With Fireworks was born. Around the time that I started ramping up (PWF), I received a call from Chris Moon, the producer who discovered Prince. He had listened to a lot of my music and eventually signed me to a contract with Moon Sound Studios to co-write songs with him as a separate project outside of (PWF). Chris has been amazing to work with and, with no doubt, has made me a better artist.
Please tell us about your music.
After we recorded and released the first single, “This Night,” I wrote the song Runaway immediately after This Night was released. We recorded Runaway at Kiwi Audio in Batavia, IL, got it ready to release as the second single, and then I couldn’t pull the trigger on the release. I just felt it wasn’t ready. I couldn’t say why I felt that way, but I know it didn’t feel right. I wanted to group it with a couple of other songs. This is when I decided to start taking more creative control over my music. I started recording in my own studio, trying every single idea that popped into my head because I had no time constraints recording in my own space. The rest of the EP (“Saturday’s Masquerade,” “Hurts & Burns Like All Hell,” “Playing With Fireworks I”) all came together from concept to writing to recording in my own studio.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Playing live to an audience any chance you get is still the best way to get exposure and develop a fan base for yourself and your music. Open mics, background bar music, coffee shops, songwriter rounds, any space to showcase your songs and personality. I still struggle with getting over the anxiety of performing live, until I jump on the stage with a microphone in front of me, shut out the rest of the world, and sing like you’re singing to a stadium full of fans.
