In the City is the brand new single from Mick Hellman. It’s also the first single from his upcoming EP, Purdie’s Dream, which is very promising in terms of sound, storytelling, and style. The single takes a classic Eagles song and gives it a new sound and vibe, bringing it remade for a new generation. Hellman is part of the outfit Highway Wolf alongside his partners in crime, Tal and Amber Morris.
In the City takes the concept of the Highway Wolf, someone who is wandering the world, pursuing their own calling and choosing to answer it in their own way. The track considers the trials and tribulations of a big city, which brings a lot of liveliness and bustle but can also be challenging, especially for our furry friends. In particular, the amazing music video for the track follows the adventures of Purdie in the big city, which has a lot of challenges for someone on four legs, as the pup tries to become a city wolf.
For Hellman, the track resonates with his own experiences in a megapolis and how he likes these places, but it can overwhelm him sometimes. Often, the artist just wants to run away to the country and rejoin nature in the search for authentic things and experiences.
The music video tells an engaging story that adds a whole another layer to the song. The masterful animation by Josh Clark offers a fun experience for the viewers and helps them connect with the characters. It makes the story even more of a story and perfectly captures how threatening and how alluring the city can be.
The Highway Wolf’s central value and idea is the view that there is no single right way to be. There are many ways to be in the world, to try on different roles, different identities, and beyond.
The vibe you can find for In the City captures the essence of 70s and other retro music, modernized to sound fresh and new. It has a groove that carries the listener through, from beginning to end.
Hellman has a lifelong love of music, beginning his practice as a drummer in high school. He would share his drums with his friends, and they would play them, trying to get the rock songs just right. As an adult, his kids became musicians, and that’s what brought him back into the scene and led to him trying something a bit more professional. Highway Wolf was born during the pandemic.
