Rising Rock Trio Monocene Impress Listeners With Their Latest Album ‘More Than I Own’

Every once in a while, a band appears with a sound that feels deeply lived-in. Monocene carries that feeling in every song they create. The German-Croatian alternative rock trio blends heavy guitar work, atmospheric layers, and emotionally raw songwriting into music that feels intensely personal without losing its universal appeal.

Their songs explore isolation, depression, racism, emotional exhaustion, and the search for identity in a world that constantly demands more. Instead of hiding those experiences behind polished surfaces, Monocene turns them into the foundation of their music.

When Music Becomes A Lifeline

Monocene was formed in 2023 by Joerg Grote, Igor Zimic, and Stjepan Vukušić. Although the group itself is still young, the paths that led the three musicians together were shaped by years of struggle, performance, and personal hardship.

Before the band existed, none of the members knew each other. What connected them was the fact that each person had reached a difficult point in life and was searching for something meaningful to hold onto. Music became that escape and eventually the thing that united them.

Their first meeting still feels surreal to the band. Igor and Stjepan unexpectedly discovered they both came from the same region of Croatia despite never having crossed paths before. The moment Stjepan walked into the room, he immediately spoke Croatian to Igor. That instant connection created the feeling that the band was meant to happen.

Musically, the members agreed from the beginning that no influence would be off-limits. Their backgrounds were far too diverse for creative restrictions. One member had spent years performing in Croatian bars as a cover musician. Another had built his style in underground Zagreb rehearsal spaces. The third explored everything from jazz and swing to metal and hard rock.

Those experiences helped shape a sound that feels expansive while still remaining emotionally focused. Even when Monocene experiments with different textures and dynamics, their identity stays recognizable.

More Than I Own Carries The Weight Of Real Experiences

Following the release of their debut EP Superior in 2024, Monocene took a major creative step forward with their first full-length album, More Than I Own. Released on January 24, 2026, the record was created between winter 2024 and autumn 2025 alongside producer Mike Jordan.

The 13-track album unfolds like an emotional journey. Songs such as Friction, Follow The Sun, Connected At Heart, and Timeless move through feelings of alienation, emotional collapse, uncertainty, and quiet resilience. The album’s pacing gives listeners time to absorb every emotional shift rather than overwhelming them with constant intensity.

What makes the record particularly powerful is the honesty behind the lyrics. Monocene writes from direct experience. Themes like xenophobia, exclusion, displacement, and depression are treated with sincerity because the band members have lived through those realities themselves.

At the center of the album sits a difficult but important question: what remains when material possessions lose their meaning? The title More Than I Own reflects that search for something deeper than status, wealth, or external success.

Rather than offering comforting answers, the album encourages reflection. It asks listeners to examine what truly defines them once distractions disappear. That emotional depth gives the project lasting impact long after the final song ends.

Critics have also recognized the emotional honesty that drives the band’s work. Vaultlab.it praised Monocene for their “depth, honesty, and tangible emotional urgency,” qualities that continue to separate them from many modern rock acts.

The Sound Of Restraint And Emotional Tension

Monocene’s music sits somewhere between alternative rock, post-grunge, and indie rock, though their sound refuses to stay confined within one category. Massive guitar walls often collide with stripped-back arrangements that create space for vulnerability and tension.

Their music rarely depends on excess. Emotional weight comes from atmosphere, dynamics, and carefully controlled intensity. Quiet moments feel just as important as the louder ones. That balance allows the songs to breathe naturally.

The band’s willingness to embrace multiple influences also keeps their music unpredictable. Elements of metal, classic rock, indie, and even jazz-inspired phrasing appear throughout their work without feeling forced. Every choice serves the emotional direction of the song itself.

Listeners can sense that the music functions as therapy for the band members. There is no emotional distance between the artists and the material they create. That honesty becomes impossible to ignore.

About The Band

Monocene is a German-Croatian alternative rock trio made up of Joerg Grote, Igor Zimic, and Stjepan Vukušić. Formed in 2023, the band combines emotional songwriting, atmospheric soundscapes, and powerful guitar-driven arrangements inspired by alternative rock, indie, and post-grunge music.

Monocene-More-Than-I-Own-2

Their debut EP Superior arrived in 2024, followed by the independently produced studio album More Than I Own in 2026. Through deeply personal lyrics and emotionally intense performances, Monocene continues building a sound rooted in truth, vulnerability, and human experience.

Why Their Music Resonates

Monocene creates the kind of music that stays with listeners because it comes from genuine emotion rather than surface-level trends. Their songs reflect difficult realities while still leaving room for connection, understanding, and hope.

As the band continues to grow, their willingness to confront uncomfortable emotions with honesty may become their strongest quality. In an increasingly crowded music landscape, Monocene stands out by sounding completely human.

We had the privilege of interviewing the Music Artists. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourselves and tell us what you do.

We are MONOCENE, an alternative rock band from Germany. Our music combines heavy guitars, atmospheric soundscapes, and emotional songwriting. We create music that reflects personal struggles, inner conflicts, isolation, and the pressures of modern life. We want every song to feel honest and intense, both emotionally and sonically.

Please tell us about your band’s development.

The three of us have all been through a lot, both musically and personally. The fact that we found each other is either an incredible coincidence or fate, depending on how you look at it. The three of us didn’t know each other at the time; we were all in very, very difficult personal situations and were each looking for something to help us cope – and that just happens to be music. For us, it was ‘love at first sight’. The fact that Igor and Stjepan both come from the same part of Croatia was an even more incredible coincidence. They didn’t know each other at all beforehand. Stjepan walked in, looked at Igor, and spoke to him straight away in Croatian. Unbelievable.

Musically, we promised each other we’d try out everything we enjoy. You can hear that on the album too. Nevertheless, we always have something distinctive, our signature sound, so to speak. We’re very proud of that.

Our songs mainly revolve around the things we’ve experienced: alienation, exclusion, racism, and depression. But above all, the album revolves around the central question: what do I really possess when I strip away all the material things? What remains?

So for us, music is always therapy too 😉

What strategies have helped you on your path to success?

One key strategy was staying true to ourselves rather than trying to meet expectations. We focused on making music that truly represents who we are.

Consistency also played a major role. Even when progress seemed slow, we kept writing, recording, refining, and releasing music. Building a project from scratch requires patience.

Another key factor was learning a wide range of skills beyond music, including production, visuals, branding, video production, and digital promotion. In today’s music industry, artists often have to build a whole world around their music.

We’ve been at this for a few years now; we’re no longer in our 20s, but in our late 30s and early 40s. Life experience helps us not to take things so seriously and to enjoy them more.

You know better how to deal with certain things and don’t dwell on nonsense or negative things and feelings.

Any message to our readers?

Stay true to yourselves and create things that really mean something to you. The most powerful art often arises from vulnerability and real experiences. And to everyone who’s struggling inside: you’re not alone, even if it feels that way.

A big thank you to everyone who listens, supports independent music, and identifies with what other artists and I do. We’ve met so many bands and played, spoken, and partied with so many great people. Support local artists, buy their stuff, and go to live events. And above all: make art yourselves, create things, and have the courage to show them to everyone.

Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
