In the realm of country music, Colin Gordon-Farleigh stands out not just as a singer but as a multi-award-winning songwriter whose profound lyrical narratives and melodies captivate audiences globally. His latest single, “Lonely Is A Memory,” from the album “Dreaming In Nashville,” explores the theme of memory and coping mechanisms—how individuals either drink to forget or drink to remember. This song has struck a chord with a vast audience, resonating particularly with those grappling with loss or enduring the pangs of heartbreak.
From Poetic Verses to Melodic Expressions
Colin’s musical voyage began in his childhood, rooted deeply in country music and an early affinity for poetry. By the age of fourteen, he was already a devout fan of country music, and at just eight, he started writing verses. His talent for verse led to publications in his teenage years, setting the stage for his later endeavors in songwriting. Initially focusing on worship songs, Colin’s public singing was primarily within the confines of a choir, though he never missed a chance to sing his beloved country tunes in solitude, a practice that nurtured his vocal skills and passion for music.
Transitioning to Songwriting
The transition to songwriting about 25 years ago marked a pivotal evolution in Colin’s career. He began as a lyricist, with his early songs composed in collaboration with a music partner. Blessed with a keen sense of rhythm, it wasn’t long before Colin ventured into composing melodies for his lyrics. This new creative direction saw his songs gaining traction, with many being recorded by artists both in Nashville and the UK. His burgeoning reputation as a songwriter was cemented with multiple awards, celebrating his ability to connect with and move his audience through music.
A Turning Point in Nashville
Colin’s musical journey took a significant turn in 2017 during a visit to Nashville, where an impromptu singing invitation led to a more substantial recording opportunity. The outcome was a three-track EP that made waves, particularly with one track climbing to the top of online radio charts within just two months of release. This success was followed by prestigious recognitions, including being named the Bluegrass Singer of the Year by the Akademia Music Awards in consecutive years, 2018 and 2019.
The following years were prolific for Colin, who has since released six albums, numerous singles, and several compilation albums. His latest work, “Dreaming In Nashville,” released earlier this year, continues to showcase his evolving artistry and dedication to the craft of music.
Expanding Musical Boundaries
While primarily a country music songwriter, Colin’s repertoire also includes influences from jazz and classical crossover genres. This versatility not only broadens his appeal but also highlights his ability to transcend musical boundaries. He records his music in Nashville, under the expert guidance of his producer, Ernie Rowell, a seasoned professional known for his work with some of country music’s greats, including George Jones and Mel Tillis. This collaboration has significantly influenced the quality and authenticity of Colin’s recordings.
Colin’s most recent project includes composing a Cornish anthem, showcasing his capacity to create music that appeals to community and heritage, themes that are now being celebrated by choirs.
Reflections on a Musical Legacy
Colin Gordon-Farleigh’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of music and the impact of a deeply committed artist. His narrative is one of constant evolution, from a young verse writer to a celebrated songwriter and singer whose works continue to inspire and resonate with listeners around the globe. Each new project Colin undertakes reaffirms his role not only as a musician but as a storyteller whose songs reflect the nuances of human emotion and experience. “Lonely Is A Memory” and the album “Dreaming In Nashville” are the latest in a series of musical endeavors that celebrate the richness of life’s stories through the universal language of music. We had the privilege of interviewing Colin Gordon-Farleigh. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Colin, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share your journey with our readers.
Hi, I have been a Country Music fan since I was fourteen; I have been writing verse since the age of eight. I started to be published whilst in my teens, and over time, I have had several volumes of verse published. This led to my early songwriting when I wrote several Worship songs. Music was always important in my life, and for some time, my public singing was confined to singing in a choir, although I used to sing a lot whilst on my own, belting out my country favorites.
About 25 years ago, I started songwriting with a passion and initially worked as a lyricist rather than a composer. My earliest songs had music composed by my current music partner at the time. I was blessed with a natural sense of rhythm, so it was not long before I started to compose the melodies for some of my songs. More and more songs came out, and many of them were recorded by different artists in Nashville and the UK. Awards came along for many of my songs. It was whilst in Nashville in 2017 that I was invited to sing one day, and then the rest, as they say, is history. The result of that invitation was an invite to record, and initially, I recorded a 3-track EP. The result was amazing, with one of the songs becoming Number 1 on two online radio stations in the first two months of release. The following year, I was named by the Akademia Music Awards as their Bluegrass Singer of The Year, an accolade that was repeated in 2019. More albums have followed since then. I currently have six albums, several Sinles, and also several compilation albums with other artists recording songs that I have written. The latest album, Dreaming In Nashville, was released earlier this year. I continue to write more songs and compose more music all the time. I recently composed the music for a Cornish Anthem, which is being picked up by several choirs. Over the years, I have written mainly country music but also songs influenced by Jazz and Classical Crossover genres. I record in Nashville under the watchful eye of my producer, Ernie Rowell, who has played and worked with many of the ‘Greats’ of Country Music, including working with George Jones for 8 years and with artists such as Mel Tillis, Ray Price, and Stonewall Jackson.
