Tyler Hathaway Breaks the Silence with ‘Shadow’s Child’ – A Memoir Like No Other

Some stories come from imagination, while others emerge from lived experiences that demand to be heard. Shadow’s Child by Tyler Hathaway is one such book—a deeply personal and hauntingly raw account of a childhood overshadowed by fear, pain, and survival.

Unlike most childhoods filled with warmth and discovery, Hathaway’s early years were defined by relentless abuse. At the young age of four, he found himself at the mercy of those who should have protected him. His father played the central role in a life where punishment was never about justice—it was about control, power, and the cruelest forms of belittlement. Other family members joined in, making every day a battle against shame, suffering, and a desperate search for escape.

His only refuge? The shadows. There, in the hidden corners of his world, he found solitude, a place where he could momentarily disappear from the torment inflicted upon him. But hiding could only do so much. Every morning, he woke up to an existence where he was made to feel like a crime—like his very presence was an offense that warranted punishment.

Shadow’s Child is more than a retelling of a tragic past. It is an unflinching look at what it means to grow up in an environment designed to break a child’s spirit. Yet, it is also a powerful message about survival, resilience, and the courage to share a truth that many keep locked away.

Breaking the Silence on Childhood Trauma

Writing this book was not an easy feat for Hathaway. Revisiting the past meant confronting the ghosts of his childhood, reliving moments he had long tried to forget. It took countless revisions, emotional turmoil, and an unwavering commitment to honesty to bring Shadow’s Child to life. But he knew this story needed to be told—not just for himself, but for others who have endured similar struggles.

The silence surrounding childhood abuse can be deafening. Many survivors grow up believing their experiences should be buried, that speaking out will only lead to more pain. Hathaway’s book aims to change that. By openly sharing his journey, he hopes to encourage others to find their voices, to break free from the invisible chains that keep them bound to their past.

His book also serves as a crucial reminder: childhood trauma doesn’t just end when the abuse stops. The scars—both seen and unseen—remain, shaping lives in ways that outsiders may never fully understand. Hathaway’s story highlights the lasting effects of such trauma and the strength it takes to confront it.

What makes Shadow’s Child even more remarkable is its purpose beyond storytelling. All proceeds from the book go to the NSPCC, a charity dedicated to protecting children and supporting survivors of abuse. In turning his painful past into something that can help others, Hathaway ensures that his suffering was not in vain.

The Man Behind the Words

Tyler Hathaway is not just an author—he is a survivor. His journey has been one of endurance, of trying to find his place in a world that once sought to erase him. Living with disabilities has added another layer of challenges, yet he refuses to let them define him. Instead, he has channeled his strength into writing, crafting a six-book series that delves into the complexities of childhood trauma and its long-term effects.

Shadow’s Child is only the beginning. Each book in the series will explore different aspects of his experience, from the psychological aftermath of abuse to the lifelong struggle of fitting into a world that never felt safe. Hathaway’s mission is clear—to shed light on the realities that many survivors face and to prove that, no matter how dark the past, there is a way forward.

His story is not just about suffering; it is about fighting back, about reclaiming a voice that was once stolen. And in doing so, he gives others the courage to do the same.

Why You Should Read This Book

Shadow’s Child is not for the faint of heart. It does not sugarcoat the horrors of abuse, nor does it offer easy answers. But what it does provide is something far more valuable—truth.

For those who have experienced childhood trauma, this book offers validation. It reminds them that they are not alone, that their pain is real, and that survival is possible. For others, it serves as an eye-opening account of a reality many would rather ignore. It is a call to action—to listen, to understand, and to support those who carry the weight of their past every single day.

Hathaway’s story is one of resilience in the face of unimaginable cruelty. His words may be painful to read, but they are necessary. Because only by acknowledging the darkness can we begin to find the light.

To support his journey and contribute to the fight against child abuse, Shadow’s Child is available on Amazon, with all proceeds going to the NSPCC.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Tyler, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am disabled but have managed to write a series of books with regard to a bad childhood. My initial book, Shadow’s Child, describes the very beginnings of how my childhood went from bad to completely evil at the hands of those who were meant to protect me.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey, wow; that’s a tough one from childhood, through my teens, to homelessness, to me trying to take my own life to being held in mental health care for 20+ years.

What inspired you to write the book?

My goal is to help others realize that someone who is treated with such contempt and hatred can survive despite the odds.

Any message for our readers?

YES, I CAN.

Thank you so much, Tyler, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
