A Summer of Surprises
It’s 1979 in a tiny Michigan town. You’d think life would be pretty simple: lazy days, friends hanging out, maybe a part-time job stocking shelves. But for seventeen-year-old Stevie, nothing’s that neat. He lands a summer gig at a local liquor store—sounds normal, right? Except this store’s packing a dark punch. Racism, sex, and violence lurk behind the friendly greetings, and they hit Stevie like a one-two combo he never expected. It’s a jolt for any teenager who was raised on good values. Suddenly, he’s questioning if the world he thought he knew was just smoke and mirrors.
Stevie’s at a crossroads. One side’s his safe, wholesome upbringing; the other’s a pit of ugly truths at his new workplace. He keeps showing up—he needs the paycheck, after all—but the tension’s rising, and he’s not sure how much more he can handle. What started as a straightforward summer job twists into a brutal education on life’s darker corners.
Struggling with Shadows
Stevie’s not just dealing with the liquor store’s chaos, either. He’s juggling high-school pressures, wondering if he can snag a running scholarship for college. Tuition’s no joke, so every mile he clocks on his cross-country team might be one step closer to financial help. But he’s also wrestling with some big career dreams—everything from becoming a police officer to a fighter pilot to maybe stepping into seminary. Nobody said figuring out the future would be easy, but let’s be real: Stevie’s in deep.
Then there’s the racism creeping through the store’s underbelly, the violence that pops up when least expected, and even some risky encounters with prostitutes. These things crash against the naive parts of Stevie’s brain, making him wonder if there’s any true goodness left in the world. At times, the store feels like an alternate universe, one where moral compasses spin in all directions. You feel the tension in every chapter—like glass on the verge of shattering.
Yet Stevie’s not totally alone. There’s Jenny—an older, free-spirited girl who wanders into his life. She’s a real wildcard. Maybe she’ll save him from the downward spiral, or maybe she’ll push him further into the mess. The novel keeps you on the edge, flipping pages to see which path Stevie takes. Does he hold on to that last shred of innocence, or does it slip right through his fingers?
On the Run
Running’s more than a sport for Stevie—it’s his possible ticket out. It’s also a haven, a place to sort through the mounting pressure. Some days, he imagines the rush of crossing a finish line with a scholarship on the horizon. Other days, his mind races with worry about the liquor store’s sketchy dealings.
The story doesn’t skimp on intensity. If you’re into high-stakes drama, Brutal Innocence delivers. Characters show up who test Stevie’s loyalty, his patience, and his faith in people. There are bootleggers, shady deals, and a level of tension that never really lets you relax. Each training run or cross-country race is a flicker of hope. But you can’t help wondering if one wrong move might wreck Stevie’s future in a single blow.
In the midst of it all, Jenny’s presence tugs at his heart. She’s older, a bit more experienced, and maybe just as lost. Will she open Stevie’s eyes to a better way forward? Or will she be his final push into a moral free-fall? The author keeps you guessing right to the last page, making this novel a no-holds-barred coming-of-age tale—unlike any you’ve read before.
Meet the Author
The mind behind Brutal Innocence is Tom Mohrbach, a retired Michigan police officer who’s had his fair share of real-life drama. Nearly three decades on the force introduced him to more than a few wild characters and tense situations. Those experiences shaped his writing, giving his stories a hard-hitting authenticity.
Mohrbach’s writing style is influenced by authors like John Sandford, Lee Child, and Vince Flynn. You’ll see that same gritty, keep-you-up-all-night energy in his work. He’s also penned over 150 articles in The Monroe Evening News, tackling real police tales before shifting to action-adventure novels. Short chapters keep the pace rolling—perfect for a weekend binge.
Brutal Innocence is actually his fifth novel, and it’s loaded with vivid details that draw on his experiences. He lives in sunny New Port Richey, Florida, alongside Cindy (his wife and best friend) and their rescue dog Penny. When he’s not weaving intense storylines, Mohrbach’s out fishing, hiking, or nurturing his lifelong faith as a devout Catholic—he credits his spirituality for guiding him through life’s ups and downs.
All his novels, including Brutal Innocence, are self-published on Amazon. If you love action, adventure, and characters who practically leap off the page, then give this one a shot. You’ll be swept into Stevie’s gripping struggle—will he maintain his moral ground, or fall victim to the darkness swirling around him? It’s a question that’ll nag you the entire time, with every short chapter hitting you like a jolt of electricity.
This isn’t just another coming-of-age story—it’s raw, it’s messy, and it doesn’t flinch. The summer of ’79 in Michigan has never looked so intense. Don’t be surprised if you devour the whole thing in a single weekend. Sometimes, the only way to find the light is to wade through the shadows…and Stevie’s about to do exactly that.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
I’m Tom Mohrbach a retired police officer from Michigan that now writes action packed novels instead of standardized police reports. The nearly thirty years I spent as a police officer introduced me to a variety of interesting individuals and situations. My fictional characters often contain aspects of actual individuals that I have personally dealt with on their worst days. This adds an emotionally raw edge to the character not often expressed in other novels.
I currently reside in sunny Florida with my wife Cindy and our rescue dog Penny. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, fishing, reading, and, of course, writing. I am a lifelong Catholic and would be lost without my faith.
All my novels are self published and available via Amazon.
Please tell us about your novel ‘Brutal Innocence’
Brutal Innocence is my fifth novel. In Brutal Innocence, a young man trying to figure out his future is exposed to a myriad of conflicts while working at a summer job at a liquor store. His moral compass is completely upended as he encounters alcoholism, violence, racism, prostitutes, bootleggers, and the pressures of high school. Jenny, a free-spirited older girl, helps him navigate through this very unusual summer. This is a gripping, no-holds-barred, coming-of-age tale like no other. Those interested in running will be excited to know that Stevie is a competitive cross-country runner. A few races and very interesting training runs are detailed throughout the storyline.
