‘To Kill or Not to Kill’ by Srinath Ramesh Is This Year’s Must-Read Psychological Thriller

Unveiling Truth in the Shadows

When thrillers blend suspense with introspection, readers find themselves on an unforgettable journey. Srinath Ramesh’s debut novel, To Kill or Not to Kill, now available on Amazon, promises precisely this kind of experience. Set against a backdrop of meticulously engineered silence and hidden motives, the book challenges readers to unravel a world carefully built on control and obedience.

In To Kill or Not to Kill, we follow an operative whose life is meticulously orchestrated for perfect obedience and ruthless efficiency. His existence is rooted in discipline—trained never to question, never to feel hesitation. But even the most perfect machinery can falter. A tiny moment of doubt begins to fracture his ironclad resolve, allowing suppressed emotions and buried questions to surface. Srinath masterfully engages readers by confronting them with unsettling truths: Can true loyalty exist without freedom? Can an identity ever feel genuine if someone else pens the script?

Crafting a Narrative with Cinematic Precision

Srinath-Ramesh Srinath Ramesh’s journey to storytelling is as intriguing as the story itself. Originally from Chennai, India, Srinath holds a degree in Information Technology and spent over ten years working in the IT sector. However, beneath this practical career lay a profound love for storytelling and filmmaking, cultivated by admiring the works of global cinematic masters such as Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kubrick, Lynch, and Kurosawa. The influence of these filmmakers is unmistakable in Srinath’s writing style, which elegantly fuses visual drama with literary depth.

His prowess was first recognized when he ranked 53rd out of an astounding 100,000 participants in a nationwide Poetry & Creative Writing competition. Beyond prose, Srinath’s screenplay, From a Drop to an Ocean, won significant accolades, securing Best Screenplay at the Kodaikanal International Film Festival and nominations at prestigious platforms like the Madras Independent Film Festival and the Jaipur International Film Festival. His impressive credentials underscore a unique ability to tell stories that resonate deeply, regardless of the medium.

Characters Who Question Reality

At the heart of this enthralling thriller is an unnamed protagonist—a man trained to perfection, designed never to question his commands or his mission. Yet, Srinath cleverly explores how even the most seemingly unbreakable characters harbor hidden vulnerabilities. The protagonist’s internal conflict propels the story forward, creating a suspenseful, reflective journey that deeply engages readers.

Instead of overt explosions and overt confrontations, Srinath opts for quiet tension, placing his hero within a psychological maze. As readers follow him through shadowy corridors of thought and action, they become participants in the search for truth and self-realization. Srinath crafts his protagonist carefully, allowing readers to empathize deeply as the character grapples with the unsettling realization of his humanity.

We had the privilege of interviewing Srinath Ramesh. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Srinath, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I’m Srinath from Chennai. I come from a very modest background. I have lived with my parents and brother, who have been my pillar of support over the years. During my school days, I used to score high marks in English. My English teacher used to take my answer sheets as a reference for her son. But, once I finished my schooling, I had to join B Tech (IT) because I wanted to help out my family financially. While studying, I gained a passion for storytelling and filmmaking. Although it took 10 years to quit IT and start writing, I finally achieved it.

Srinath-Ramesh

Please tell us about your journey.

I always thought that my first book/story/film should connect to everyone, and what better genre than a thriller/noir to achieve this. I knew I had to have a physically strong hero going through challenging times with a femme fatale doing her thing with the hero and otherwise, and a strong world built around them. I also knew I had to have a proper romance for the hero outside the femme fatale. But these are just the starting ingredients. We have accidents, amnesia, remembering/putting back pieces, a massive corporate structure, a major scandal, etc. I had written the Outline of this story 10 years back, but only after I quit my IT job, I was able to actually put the novel into words.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The first strategy is taking notes of the ideas that you get. For me, ideas don’t come easily when I sit in front of a computer. The good ideas come when I’m walking or lying down. So, I write these as notes when I get access to my computer and separate the ideas into various stories depending on which idea suits which story. If it is an idea for an existing story that I’m writing, I add it to that folder. If it’s a completely new idea, I create a new folder for it. The next strategy is to outline. If you have your Outline ready, you can easily fill in the story and scenes around it.

Any message for our readers?

What I can tell you is that the novel is a page-turner. It has deep characterizations as much as twists and turns for you to enjoy. The book is unique in the sense that it has many conventional elements of the Thriller/Noir genre that would attract readers of the genre, as well as some surprise packages with additional concepts included. I hope you enjoy the book thoroughly.

Thank you so much, Srinath, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
