As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, one of its lingering and most perplexing legacies is Long COVID—a condition affecting millions of individuals around the world. Long COVID manifests in a variety of symptoms, from chronic fatigue and cognitive difficulties to pain, breathing problems, and more. For many, these symptoms persist well beyond the acute phase of infection, making daily life challenging.
Dr. Robert Groysman, MD, a respected physician with over two decades of experience in pain management, has been at the forefront of helping patients understand and navigate Long COVID. His two-volume series, The Complete Long COVID Handbook, aims to offer both patients and healthcare providers essential insights into this complex condition. The books not only cover the science behind Long COVID but also provide practical strategies for managing its symptoms.
Volume 1: The Complete Long COVID Handbook – A Comprehensive Guide
The Complete Long COVID Handbook: Volume 1 serves as a foundational resource for anyone trying to understand Long COVID. Written by Dr. Groysman after more than a year of dedicated research and patient care, this book breaks down the intricacies of the condition in a way that is accessible to both medical professionals and patients alike.
One of the key strengths of Volume 1 is how it demystifies Long COVID, presenting clear explanations of the condition’s underlying causes, risk factors, and available treatment options. Dr. Groysman emphasizes that Long COVID is not a “one-size-fits-all” condition. Each individual experiences it differently, and as a result, treatment plans must be highly personalized. The book offers practical advice for creating a tailored approach to care, helping patients collaborate with their healthcare providers to find the best solutions for their unique needs.
The first volume also dives into a variety of treatment options, from conventional medicine to more holistic and alternative approaches. Dr. Groysman shares his expertise in identifying and addressing the core mechanisms behind Long COVID, encouraging readers to explore individualized treatments under the guidance of a medical professional.
A standout feature of this handbook is Dr. Groysman’s empathy and understanding of his patients’ struggles. He addresses the emotional toll that Long COVID takes, particularly for those who feel dismissed by their doctors, families, or friends. This book not only provides medical knowledge but also aims to validate the experiences of those living with Long COVID, offering hope and a path to recovery.
Volume 2: The Complete Long COVID Handbook – Dysautonomia Focus
In The Complete Long COVID Handbook: Dysautonomia: Volume 2, Dr. Groysman focuses on dysautonomia, a common yet under-recognized condition in Long COVID patients. Dysautonomia refers to a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which controls essential body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. For many Long COVID sufferers, dysautonomia significantly impacts their daily lives, exacerbating other symptoms and making recovery more challenging.
This second volume provides a deep dive into the symptoms and treatment options for dysautonomia, highlighting how it presents in Long COVID patients. One of the more well-known conditions associated with dysautonomia is Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), but as Dr. Groysman points out, dysautonomia is much broader than just POTS. The book covers various forms of dysautonomia and offers guidance on managing these symptoms effectively.
Much like Volume 1, the focus here is on personalized care. Dr. Groysman emphasizes the importance of working closely with a healthcare provider to create a treatment plan tailored to the individual’s specific needs. He provides practical strategies that can be implemented in real life, offering readers both hope and direction as they work towards recovery.
A particularly valuable aspect of Volume 2 is its focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of living with dysautonomia. The book acknowledges the frustration and fear that often accompany a diagnosis of this complex condition, and it offers strategies for managing these emotions as part of the overall treatment plan.
Dr. Robert Groysman’s Unique Approach to Long COVID Treatment
Dr. Groysman’s work in Long COVID is the result of years of experience treating complex medical conditions. He first began treating Long COVID patients early in the pandemic and quickly realized the need for a specialized approach. His two-volume handbook series is based on a wealth of clinical experience and ongoing research, and his unique approach to treating Long COVID has made him a trusted resource for both patients and healthcare professionals.
One of Dr. Groysman’s most innovative contributions to the field is his four-step mitochondrial dysfunction treatment plan, which he has found to be highly effective in helping Long COVID patients regain energy and reduce fatigue. Additionally, Dr. Groysman has pioneered the use of Stellate Ganglion Blocks (SGB) in treating Long COVID symptoms like brain fog and anxiety. His work has also introduced Epipharyngeal Abrasive Therapy (EAT) alongside SGB for addressing dysautonomia, providing new hope for those suffering from this debilitating condition.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Groysman is deeply committed to patient advocacy. He has created a wealth of resources for Long COVID patients, including instructional videos, podcasts, and an online community. Through his website, covidinstitute.org, and social media platforms, he continues to offer support, education, and hope to Long COVID patients around the world.
Conclusion
Dr. Robert Groysman’s Complete Long COVID Handbook series offers a comprehensive and compassionate guide to understanding and treating Long COVID and its associated conditions. Both Volume 1 and Volume 2 are invaluable resources for patients seeking relief from their symptoms and for healthcare providers looking to expand their knowledge of this evolving condition. Through his books, Dr. Groysman provides practical strategies, expert insights, and a message of hope for those struggling with Long COVID. His dedication to patient care and advocacy makes these handbooks essential reading for anyone affected by this complex condition.
We had the privilege of interviewing the accomplished author; here are excerpts from the interview.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.
I am a physician who treats long covid. I have developed my own unique protocols that work. Over the last four years, I have been an advocate for those who were gaslit by their families, friends, coworkers, and doctors.
Please tell us about your work
I have developed a website with lots of information about long covid: covidinstitute.org. I run a large, long covid Facebook group and have created many instructional videos on YouTube. I see patients from all over the world.
I have created The Complete Long COVID Handbook series, Volume 1 and Volume 2. The goal of the books is to validate everyone who was gaslit. Organize and describe the causes and why they cause symptoms. To discuss possible treatments by looking at the causes instead of hunting and pecking to try the next best thing that comes out. Patients can give the book to their doctors to help them treat long covid.
For me, the complete long covid handbook series is meant to help:
1. To validate those who have been dismissed, ignored, and gaslit by their doctors, friends, family, and coworkers.
2. To genuinely show you what you are experiencing is absolutely real, is not your head, and is not due to anxiety.
3. those who seek to understand what is actually happening inside their bodies to cause long covid
4. those who are trying to help their loved ones and children who have no one else looking out for them
5. Educating other doctors who don’t understand long covid
This series is a work of passion for me. Long covid is still very much dismissed by most of the general public. I get tons of hate messages and emails. The best way to combat hate and ignorance is with education and information.
Please tell us about your journey.
My journey started back before long covid was a thing. I was doing stellate ganglion blocks for PTSD and had some patients come through without any taste or smell. This pulled me into what has become known as long covid.
Thank you so much, Dr. Robert, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
