A Parent’s Companion Through Everyday Struggles
Alana Simpson’s Step by Step Stories for Everyday Challenges isn’t your typical parenting book. It’s a practical, heartfelt toolkit created for families raising neurodivergent children—those who experience the world a little differently. Through her experience as a behavioral therapist, Alana saw firsthand how overwhelming common experiences—like a visit to the dentist or the first day of school—can be for kids who need a bit more guidance and predictability.
This book steps in to offer that guidance. With compassion and clarity, it provides ready-to-use social stories that simplify these moments into manageable steps. It’s written for any parent who’s ever felt stuck trying to explain something to their child or unsure how to ease anxiety before a new event. With every page, Alana’s message is clear: there’s always a way forward, and you don’t have to find it alone.
Breaking Down the Power of Social Stories
At the core of this guide is the concept of “social stories”—narratives that teach and prepare children for real-life situations. Alana explains what they are in easy terms, then walks readers through how to create and adapt them for their own child. The process is straightforward and forgiving. There’s no need for elaborate materials or professional training. Just understanding your child’s needs and having a few helpful prompts can make all the difference.
These stories work because they speak a child’s language. They’re calm, visual, predictable. Whether a child is dealing with transitions, unfamiliar settings, or social interactions, a well-crafted social story can help them visualize what’s coming and understand what’s expected. For children who often feel overwhelmed, this kind of clarity brings a sense of control—and that’s where real progress begins.
Alana’s Expertise Shines Through Every Chapter
Alana Simpson’s background lends both authority and warmth to her writing. She holds a degree in sociology from Bowling Green State University and brings certifications as a Board Certified Autism Technician and Certified Autism Specialist. She’s worked across home environments, therapy centers, and schools—currently serving as a Behavioral Therapist in an elementary school setting.
Throughout her career, she’s helped kids build skills in real-world environments, supporting everything from communication to emotional regulation. Her deep understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) shows up in every section, but the book never feels clinical or impersonal. Instead, Alana keeps it human. Her writing reflects the real struggles and small wins that make up everyday life for families of neurodivergent children.
Stories That Speak to Kids—and Support Adults
What sets Step by Step apart is how well it serves both the child and the caregiver. For kids, the illustrated stories turn abstract or intimidating experiences into concrete, step-by-step narratives. These aren’t just lessons—they’re relatable guides that make everyday events less scary and more understandable. Whether it’s getting ready for school, handling a trip to the doctor, or figuring out how to ask for help, each story walks through the moment with empathy and structure.
For parents, it’s an emotional support system. Alana doesn’t just provide instructions—she offers encouragement. The book acknowledges that parenting can be exhausting and isolating. In the toughest moments, when nothing seems to work, these stories offer a roadmap. They show you how to respond with patience, and more importantly, how to feel confident in doing so.
A Book Born From Real-Life Experience
Alana didn’t write this book from a distance—she created it after years of listening, observing, and walking beside families through their toughest moments. Her goal was simple: to help parents during those overwhelming times when emotions run high and solutions feel out of reach. She wanted to offer something real, something they could pick up in the middle of chaos and actually use.
That’s exactly what this book does. Each story, each suggestion, is rooted in her deep respect for both children and the adults guiding them. By giving parents a framework for communication, she also gives them hope—a belief that growth, understanding, and even joy are possible through the smallest of steps.
Final Thoughts: A Gentle, Helpful Guide for Real Families
Step by Step Stories for Everyday Challenges is a beautifully crafted, down-to-earth guide that helps bridge the gap between a child’s world and the world around them. Alana Simpson brings her expertise and her heart to every page, creating a resource that’s just as comforting as it is useful. For parents, caregivers, and even educators looking for simple ways to support neurodivergent kids—this book is a gift.
