This novella brings to life the ancient stories of Ireland with a modern and deeply personal twist, creating a unique reading experience full of suspense, mystery, and heart.
Setanta’s life has always been cloaked in uncertainty and sorrow. His mother vanished without explanation, leaving behind questions that haunt him endlessly. His father, emotionally distant and tormented by unseen ghosts, seems barely able to care for himself, let alone his son. Together, they travel a haunting path, relentlessly pursuing the spectral Lady by the Water, whose melancholic song signals imminent tragedy.
When a terrifying encounter with a cursed hound alters Setanta’s fate forever, the foundations of everything he believed crumble. What unfolds is a gripping exploration of identity, legacy, and destiny, as Setanta discovers unsettling truths about his lineage and himself. Lane expertly weaves ancient legends with contemporary storytelling, creating a rich tapestry of suspense and revelation.
Compelling Characters and Emotional Depth
Setanta emerges as a deeply engaging protagonist—a young hero whose vulnerability and bravery coexist in a compelling balance. Readers will connect profoundly with his struggles, fears, and moments of triumph, feeling his emotional journey as vividly as their own. Lane crafts a realistic portrayal of grief, loss, and self-discovery, allowing Setanta’s internal journey to resonate powerfully with readers.
Setanta’s complicated relationship with his father is particularly poignant. Layered with unspoken love, resentment, and shared grief, it becomes a central thread weaving through the novella. Lane depicts their bond with sensitivity, providing moments of quiet heartbreak and genuine tenderness, all of which ground the fantastical elements in emotional reality.
The Lady by the Water herself is both captivating and chilling. As a banshee whose song foretells death, she embodies the very essence of folklore—beautiful, eerie, and deeply unsettling. Lane skillfully brings her character to life, ensuring she remains a haunting presence throughout Setanta’s quest, adding layers of suspense and intrigue.
Immersive Setting and Lyrical Prose
Lane’s vivid descriptions of the Irish landscape draw readers irresistibly into Setanta’s world. Every scene feels atmospheric and tangible, from the eerie silence of abandoned villages to the shadow-drenched hillsides shrouded in mystery. The novella’s settings are almost characters themselves, richly described in Lane’s lyrical and evocative prose, enhancing the novella’s enchanting yet somber mood.
This blend of vivid imagery and poetic language transforms each page into an immersive experience, transporting readers effortlessly into a world where myths and reality intertwine. Lane ensures every scene resonates with both beauty and dread, keeping readers enthralled from start to finish.
A Debut Filled with Authenticity and Heart

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is John Lane. I’m a writer and father from Sligo, Ireland, with a lifelong love for storytelling rooted in Irish myth and folklore. I write in the early hours and late nights, balancing work and family life with the need to put stories down on paper — stories that have lived in my head for years.
Please tell us about your Book.
Setanta and the Lady by the Water is a mythic, emotionally driven novella set in a modern but timeless Ireland. It follows a boy and his father on a journey through grief, memory, and legend, pursued by a banshee-like figure tied to a curse that spans generations. It’s dark, poetic, and deeply human — a blend of Irish folklore and coming-of-age drama that asks: what if the stories were true, just not in the way we thought?
Please tell us about your journey.
Writing this book began as therapy and turned into a calling. I’m a cancer survivor — and coming through that changed everything. When you face your own mortality, you realise the time to follow your dreams is now, not someday. Writing Setanta and the Lady by the Water was my way of honouring that second chance. I finally told the story I’d carried with me since I was a boy. It’s personal, it’s painful in places, but it’s the truest thing I’ve ever written.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Discipline, vulnerability, and not waiting for the “perfect time.” I learned to write even when I didn’t feel ready. I allowed myself to be honest in the work — not just clever, but emotionally raw. I also surrounded myself with good feedback and didn’t shy away from critique. Every tough edit made the book stronger. But more than anything, I kept going. That’s the secret: keep going.
Any message for our readers?
You don’t have to wait for life to give you permission to tell your story. Sometimes hardship gives you the clearest voice. Use it. Whether you’re starting a paragraph or starting over — it’s never too late to begin.
Thank you so much, John, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
