Inside Pacoenfuego’s EP ‘Distant At Best’: A Dark Acoustic Masterpiece

A Journey Through Shadows and Strings

There’s a quiet power in music that lingers, even after silence takes over. Pacoenfuego’s latest release, Distant At Best, shows exactly how those echoes can stay with you. The five-song EP, released on September 12, 2025, runs just twelve minutes and thirty-three seconds, yet it feels expansive in scope. Each track opens a door into a world of reflection, tension, and emotional depth, where acoustic guitar and atmospheric production carry listeners into haunting spaces.

Roots in Mexico City

Pacoenfuego’s path began in Mexico City, where the guitar first became his closest companion. He grew up chasing melodies that expressed what conversations often couldn’t. That deep connection with the instrument built the foundation for everything that came later. Over the years, he leaned into folk-inspired storytelling, letting fingerpicked chords and raw lyrics become the heart of his work.

Pacoenfuego explored production with an adventurous spirit, eventually stepping into the demanding world of horror soundtracks. Working with Ableton, he shaped chilling sonic landscapes that brought unsettling moments in film to life. That background gave him an instinct for balancing tension with release, a skill that now threads through his songwriting.

The blend of folk intimacy and cinematic dread has created a style that resists easy categorization. It’s indie folk with a darker pulse, music that feels like it was written by candlelight in a storm.

Inside the EP: Distant At Best

The EP unfolds like a series of fleeting memories, each song painting its own corner of the emotional landscape. The opening track, it’s made, relies on sparse guitar work, allowing vulnerability to take center stage. At just over three minutes, it introduces the listener to an atmosphere of solitude that colors the rest of the project.

call, marked explicit, strikes harder with lyrics that feel closer to confession. It’s a moment of raw honesty, unpolished and piercing. sparks follows, capturing a sense of fragility in fleeting connections. The production adds layers without overwhelming the acoustic backbone, showing how Pacoenfuego balances intimacy with cinematic detail.

citylights delivers imagery both familiar and distant. Its short runtime of 2:16 mirrors how quickly a moment in a city night can vanish, leaving only memory. The closer, gust., another explicit entry, moves fast and sharp. At 1:45, it’s the briefest song on the record, yet it lands like a sudden windstorm, carrying weight far beyond its length.

Together, these tracks form a reflection of what it feels like to hold onto memories while moving through loss and longing. The brevity of the EP works to its advantage, leaving listeners with a sense of both completeness and desire for more.

The Artist Beyond the Songs

Pacoenfuego is more than a songwriter. He’s a storyteller whose work stretches across different mediums. His film compositions have already reached wide audiences, including the soundtrack for A Savior Red, featured on major platforms like Hulu and Amazon Prime. Those cinematic roots continue to influence his solo releases, giving them a scope that feels bigger than their runtime.

Based in Austin, he also produces for other artists, helping new voices find shape and direction. His touch adds atmosphere and depth, whether through subtle production choices or carefully layered arrangements. Outside of music production, he runs a podcast, creating another outlet for creative exchange. That balance between solo artistry, collaboration, and conversation reflects a musician intent on building community as much as carving his own lane.

What stands out about Pacoenfuego is his sense of purpose. His songs explore melancholy, longing, and reflection, yet they never wallow. Instead, they offer listeners space for catharsis and connection. His music holds sadness and beauty together, reminding us that both can exist in the same breath.

Looking Ahead

With Distant At Best, Pacoenfuego takes another step in a career that’s already marked by versatility and depth. His vision points toward growth while staying rooted in what first inspired him: the acoustic storytelling born from a single guitar. Future work will likely expand on this balance between folk tradition and cinematic atmosphere, carrying his audience further into landscapes of emotion.

Fans can stream Distant At Best across all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Music from Pacoenfuego weaves intimacy with grandeur, personal reflection with cinematic scope. The new EP proves that even short releases can resonate deeply when crafted with intention. As his sound continues to evolve, one thing is certain: Pacoenfuego knows how to turn shadows into songs that stay with you long after the final chord fades. We had the privilege of interviewing Pacoenfuego. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am pacoenfuego, an indie folk artist with a flavor of horror and spooky in my acoustic music.

Please tell us about your journey.

I started first as a guitarist and now do a lot of production for local artists in Austin, as well as run my own podcast. The soundtrack for horror movies has been great, but I generally love the sombre feeling of acoustic music.

Any message for our readers?

Please know there is a lot more to come, and I plan to infuse the indie folk genre with new blends and genre-bending audio.

Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
