Oakley’s Spark of Inspiration
Oakley dreams of glowing just like her mom, whose radiant smile and kind words fill any room with warmth. Every day, Oakley watches her mother effortlessly spread joy and wonders how she can do the same. But Oakley’s naturally shy, and her attempts to capture that bright spirit seem to fall short. Lightning bugs fluttering in jars, sparkling glitter scattered everywhere, and even festive Christmas lights wrapped around herself—none of these efforts manage to ignite that special glow she sees in her mom.
Each unsuccessful attempt leaves Oakley feeling a bit more discouraged, wondering if perhaps she’s missing something important. Yet, despite setbacks, Oakley holds onto the belief that one day she’ll discover her own unique way of shining brightly.
Uncovering the Secret to True Light
When Oakley feels most defeated, ready to accept she might never glow like her mom, a gentle conversation changes everything. Her mom shares a beautiful secret—that real brightness doesn’t come from external decorations or lights. Instead, the truest glow originates from having Jesus’s love and kindness inside your heart.
Hearing this, Oakley begins to understand what sets her mother apart. It isn’t glitter or flashy lights that make her mom shine—it’s kindness, love, and faithfulness flowing from within. As Oakley learns this essential lesson, she feels a newfound confidence beginning to bloom inside her.
Oakley now knows her unique brightness doesn’t have to look exactly like her mom’s. She can shine her own light by simply being herself, guided by love and faith. This empowering realization transforms Oakley’s shyness into gentle strength and gives her the courage to share warmth and kindness with everyone around her.
A Personal Story Turned Beloved Book
Bailey Rodgers, the author behind Oakley’s Bright Idea, brings a deeply personal touch to her charming children’s book. Bailey, a devoted military spouse and busy mother of two daughters, always harbored a quiet passion for storytelling, though she never imagined it becoming a reality.
Years earlier, while nannying, Bailey created a playful, heartfelt story about a young girl striving to light up a room with joy. The simple tale was lovingly gifted to the child she cared for, then gently tucked away and almost forgotten. It wasn’t until Bailey had her own daughter, Oakley, that the story resurfaced.
While sharing countless bedtime stories, Bailey noticed it was surprisingly difficult to find children’s books that celebrated faith in an engaging, simple, and relatable manner. Recognizing this gap, she revisited her old narrative, transforming it into a captivating tale of faith and confidence.
Thus, Oakley’s Bright Idea was lovingly crafted, reflecting Bailey’s own journey through motherhood, faith, and creativity. Making her own daughter, Oakley, the protagonist added an extra layer of warmth and authenticity, creating a beautiful keepsake cherished by their family.
A Warm Reminder for Families Everywhere
Bailey didn’t create Oakley’s Bright Idea merely as a sweet story to entertain children at bedtime. Her deeper hope is that the book helps families find ways to naturally and easily weave faith into everyday interactions. Bailey believes God can be present in life’s simplest, most routine moments—even amid the beautiful chaos that often accompanies parenting.
This heartwarming story is an ideal addition to any bedtime or Sunday school routine. It gently reminds young readers and their families that everyone possesses a special light within them—a light that becomes brighter when nourished by love, kindness, and faith in Jesus.
For Bailey, writing Oakley’s Bright Idea has also humorously sparked expectations from her younger daughter, Ivorly, who now eagerly awaits her turn as the star of a future story. Bailey playfully acknowledges this delightful pressure, promising readers to keep an eye out—even though it might take her a little while to write another charming tale.
Ultimately, Oakley’s journey to finding her glow resonates beyond the pages. It encourages children and adults alike to remember that the most radiant lights come from within, nurtured by love and faith. Through this delightful tale, Bailey Rodgers shares an empowering message: every child, no matter how shy or small, carries a powerful and beautiful glow that’s ready to shine brightly in the world.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hi! I’m Bailey, a military wife, mom, and now — unexpectedly but joyfully — a children’s book author. I recently self-published a Christian picture book called Oakley’s Bright Idea, written to inspire little ones to understand where and who their shining lights come from.
Please tell us about your journey.
The idea for Oakley’s Bright Idea actually began about eight years ago when I was a nanny. I doodled a little story on paper for the youngest daughter, and her mom really loved it. I thought about turning it into something more back then, but life moved on, and the idea was set aside.
Years later, as I began my own journey into motherhood, that story came back to me — but with deeper meaning. I started thinking more about the kind of role model I wanted to be. Not perfect, but someone who points my children to Jesus through everyday actions. Even when I mess up, I can use those moments to circle back to grace and remind them (and myself) what it looks like to shine a light in the world. That became the heart of the book — encouraging kids to be little lights for Jesus right where they are.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Prayer and persistence. I asked God to guide each step — from the words on the page to the illustrator I chose. I also leaned into community, shared authentically, and trusted that if the message was meaningful to even one child or parent, it was worth it. I think staying grounded in the “why” behind the book helped me keep going even when the process felt intimidating.
Any message for our readers?
Don’t underestimate the power of your voice — or your child’s. Oakley’s Bright Idea is a reminder that even small acts of kindness and love can shine brightly. And for those dreaming of writing or creating something — you don’t need a big platform or a perfect plan to begin. Just start, and trust that God will use it.
Thank you so much, Bailey, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
