Into the Abyss: The Story Begins
There’s a world beneath the world we know—cold, crawling, and unkind. That’s where Gravel: Rose by Maks Hand lives and breathes. This novella doesn’t ease readers in; it drags them straight into a brutal landscape shaped by pain and revenge.
At its core is a man—once whole, now shattered. A horrific, life-altering event breaks him, leaving only fragments of the person he used to be. Every breath he takes is a reminder of what was stolen, and every step forward is fueled by vengeance. There’s no calm, no redemption, just an aching determination to find those who destroyed him.
But revenge isn’t simple here. The world around him is infested with inhumane entities—creatures wearing the faces of ordinary people. They blend in perfectly, their monstrous nature hidden behind familiar smiles. Maks Hand takes this unsettling concept and spins it into a relentless narrative that questions what’s real, what’s human, and what’s left when both blur together.
The tone is dark, yes, but it’s also hypnotic. Readers don’t just watch this man’s descent—they feel it. His sorrow. His rage. His quiet moments of doubt. Every chapter hums with tension, making it impossible to look away.
The Gravel Series: Humanity’s Last Stand
Gravel isn’t your typical fantasy world of heroes and light. It’s something rawer—a reflection of life’s rough edges. The series speaks to those who’ve known loss, who’ve faced cruelty and kept moving anyway. Maks Hand builds a universe where broken people rise against impossible odds, where evil doesn’t hide in shadows but walks openly among the living.
The tagline says it best: Broken people in a broken world. These characters aren’t chosen warriors. They’re survivors. They stumble, fall, and bleed, yet somehow they keep going. It’s this unpolished resilience that makes the story hit deep.
Book 1, Gravel: Rose, sets the emotional foundation. It’s intimate, grim, and haunting—a personal war against unseen demons. Book 2, Gravel: Jay, pushes further, expanding the world while keeping that same emotional pulse alive. Together, they build a narrative universe that’s unforgiving yet strangely hopeful.
There’s a rhythm to the writing that mirrors the chaos of its world. Quiet moments dissolve into violent ones. Hope flickers, fades, and flickers again. Through it all, Maks Hand threads a single idea—no matter how corrupted the world becomes, there’s always someone willing to fight back. Even if they’re bleeding, even if they’re broken.
The Mind Behind the Darkness
The creator of Gravel, Maks Hand—full name Maksymilian Handkiewicz—grew up balancing two worlds of his own. Born in Poland and raised in Ireland, he carries the experiences of both cultures. That blend of contrasts—heritage and adaptation, belonging and searching—seeps into his storytelling.
By day, he’s a welder. A craftsman who spends hours surrounded by sparks, metal, and precision. By night, he writes about worlds forged in shadow. The connection is uncanny. Welding requires focus, patience, and an understanding of how heat shapes what it touches. Writing, for Maks, seems to work the same way. His sentences feel forged rather than written—sharp, deliberate, and filled with the weight of experience.
He’s open about his journey. Writing wasn’t a lifelong profession waiting to happen. It was a whisper that turned into a roar. The idea for Gravel first surfaced in 2019, lingering quietly until he finally gave it form. Once he did, it wouldn’t stop growing. What started as a concept evolved into an expansive dark fantasy world—one filled with fear, loss, and the smallest sparks of defiance.
His passion is tangible. He doesn’t romanticize the craft. Instead, he treats it like work—hard, demanding, but deeply rewarding. That realism grounds his stories. His characters don’t speak like fictional heroes; they sound like people we know, people who’ve seen things they wish they could forget.
A Read That Stays With You
What makes Gravel: Rose stand apart is its honesty. It doesn’t chase glory or redemption. It looks straight into despair and finds a strange, painful beauty there. Maks Hand captures the rawness of emotion without flinching. The result? A story that lingers long after the last line.
The prose moves with purpose. Short bursts of dialogue. Long, winding reflections. Sudden violence. Then silence. The structure mirrors life’s unpredictability—the way peace never lasts, the way pain always echoes.
For readers who crave dark fantasy with real emotional weight, this book delivers. It’s a story for those who don’t need heroes in shining armor, who understand that courage can look like just getting up one more time.
And while Gravel: Rose takes readers deep into supernatural horror, it also reveals something profoundly human. The desire to endure. The need to fight back. The fragile thread of hope that refuses to die, no matter how deep the shadows go.
Gravel: Rose is available now on Amazon, ready to pull readers into its world of vengeance, loss, and haunting truth. Maks Hand has created something more than a story—it’s a reflection of resilience forged in darkness. And once you step into that world, you won’t leave unchanged.
We had the privilege of interviewing Maks Hand. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hello, my name is Maks Hand. I’m a full-time welder and have approached writing seriously in the last two years.
Please tell us about your book series.
For years, Gravel was a spawned concept, stirring in my head since 2019. Now it’s an ongoing dark contemporary fantasy, horror series with several entries into its world. The world has become so much clearer in my head. I’m excited to continue it.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
In a way, I can say that I don’t know what I’m doing. I sit down and try to consider every aspect of something. I’m a big fan of storytelling. I enjoy the idea of creating characters and seeing where their stories go. I make lots of notes at the beginning and in the middle of a story. Foreshadowing, dropping hints, golden nuggets, I live for that type of storytelling.
Any message for our readers?
I hope people will consider exploring and experiencing this gritty world with me. There’s plenty that I want to do with it still, and I’m genuinely curious about what people think.
Thank you so much, Maks, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
