Joyful Chaos Awaits in ‘Coloring Outside the Lines’ by Robert Stoehrer Jr.

Have you ever felt trapped by your daily routine—stuck in a cycle of deadlines, meetings, and relentless expectations? If so, Robert Stoehrer Jr.’s newest book, “Coloring Outside the Lines: Life’s Too Short to Die at Your Desk,” might just be your ultimate escape plan. Combining humor, suspense, and heartfelt lessons, this novel invites you to reconsider what’s truly valuable in life.

From Corporate Success to Life-Altering Choices

Michelle and Alex are two lifelong friends whose impressive careers have seemingly set them up for success. Michelle is a Wall Street shark, and Alex a marketing mastermind—each commanding a lifestyle most people envy. Yet, beneath the shiny surface lies a stark reality: both women feel increasingly hollow, their careers quietly eroding their happiness and health. After confronting mortality through harrowing events like skydiving mishaps and an EF5 tornado, they finally make the bold decision to abandon their prestigious careers and pursue a simpler, happier life.

With an adventurous spirit, the pair moves to the idyllic town of Joyous and takes on a quirky new venture—a whimsical party store. Their new life seems perfect, with just one unusual but firm rule: absolutely no clowns. Michelle’s fear of clowns is deeply ingrained, setting a playful but clear boundary within their cheerful new venture. However, business struggles soon shake their newfound serenity, forcing them into uncharted territory to save their dream.

When Life Forces You to Face Your Fears

Desperation breeds creativity, but sometimes creativity takes an unexpected detour. When a bold marketing stunt goes wildly awry, Michelle is thrust headfirst into her worst nightmare—becoming a clown named “Merry Michelle.” Initially, the thought alone is horrifying, but soon Michelle finds herself swept into a whirlwind of glitter, viral fame, and unforeseen joy.

As Merry Michelle, she experiences an entirely different world filled with emotional connections, hilarious chaos, and even heroic moments. A particularly unforgettable scene—complete with a daring CPR rescue and a heartfelt hug from a child—captures the essence of unexpected human connection. Michelle quickly realizes that her greatest fear might actually hold the key to her most authentic happiness.

Behind the Scenes: An Author’s Inspiring Journey

The captivating, vibrant storytelling of “Coloring Outside the Lines” reflects author Robert Stoehrer Jr.’s remarkable journey. For 25 years, Robert was a dedicated IT professional—a world far removed from creative writing. However, life took an unexpected turn when he underwent the traumatic experience of losing his right foot. Confined to recovery and feeling isolated, Robert faced another unexpected challenge: a powerful storm knocked out the electricity, leaving him completely disconnected.

Left alone with his thoughts and armed only with a flashlight, pen, and scratch pad, Robert began outlining the story that would ultimately change his life. Through Michelle and Alex’s transformative journey, he channeled his own struggles, resilience, and humor into every page. His personal authenticity breathes life into the narrative, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary lessons about courage, friendship, and embracing uncertainty.

Embracing Joy in Chaos

“Coloring Outside the Lines” is not merely a story about escaping burnout or changing careers—it’s a deeper call to action. It invites readers to embrace life’s chaos, laugh at its absurdities, and reconnect with genuine joy. Michelle and Alex’s adventures demonstrate that happiness is not a destination but an active, often unpredictable journey filled with laughter, surprises, and meaningful relationships.

Through clever wit, emotional depth, and thrilling twists, Stoehrer Jr. masterfully portrays how life’s challenges can open doors to unexpected opportunities. He emphasizes that true happiness often emerges when we courageously step beyond our comfort zones, confronting fears head-on—even if those fears include red noses and oversized shoes.

We had the privilege of interviewing Robert Stoehrer Jr. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Robert, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I have worked in the IT industry for 25 years. I am a Field Technician who travels around to fix various computer issues. Writing and storytelling were never something I seriously pursued, despite many people telling me I was good at it. But, life has a funny way of presenting things in ways you can’t ignore.

Please tell us about your book.

Coloring Outside the Lines is a hilarious, suspenseful, heartfelt tale of burnout, friendship, and finding joy in the most unexpected places. Michelle and Alex are lifelong friends; they met in kindergarten.  Wall Street shark Michelle and marketing queen Alex ditch their high-powered, soul-crushing careers after back-to-back near-death experiences.  They start over in the sleepy town of Joyous, with a derelict storefront, and they open a quirky little party shop with one firm rule: no clowns. Why? Because Michelle has an intense, very real fear of them. But when their business begins to tank. One rogue employee suits up in a wig and face paint, and things take a wild turn, forcing Michelle into a bet that transforms her into Merry Michelle, a clown, for one week. What follows is a wild ride of glitter, viral fame, a CPR rescue, and a hug from a little girl that might change everything. Full of wit, warmth, and moments that hit you right in the heart, this is the ultimate feel-good beach read for anyone who’s ever dreamed of quitting the grind and choosing joy—face paint and red nose optional.

Please share your journey with our readers.

My writing journey never really started until mid-August of 2023, when doctors were forced to amputate my right foot.  The procedure left me unable to walk or even stand without assistance. During my recovery, a powerful summer storm knocked out power, and I was left in the dark.  There was no TV, no Internet, and I needed to use my phone sparingly.  However, I needed something to keep my mind active.  The only thing I could think of was to use my imagination to escape my situation mentally.  With a flashlight, a pen, and a scratch pad, I started the outline for Coloring Outside the Lines: Life’s Too Short to Die at Your Desk.  Once power was restored, I utilized AI to enhance the story, and contributions from online communities further refined the finished product.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Never give up.  In Coloring Outside the Lines, Michelle and Alex face mockery, taunting, and other negative people.  People who want to tear them down.  Ignore those who are unappreciative and focus on the people who support you.

Any message for our readers?

There are two big takeaways from this book.  First, Merry Michelle said it best when she said, “Emerald Wealth gave me everything money could buy.  But, it almost took everything it couldn’t.”  Don’t let your job take your happiness, and if it tries, it’s time to update your resume.  Second, surround yourself with people who won’t let you give up.  Just after the amputation of my foot, I was convinced that I’d never stand or walk again.  My first therapy assignment was to stand for 10 seconds, but I barely made 2 seconds on my first try.  Today, I can stand, walk, and drive (using hand controls).  The journey wasn’t easy, but in a literal sense, I took it one step at a time.

Thank you so much, Robert, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
