Dive Into The Fantasy World of ‘Orphans Pursuit’: Author Joshua Mercer’s Creative Masterpiece

Joshua Mercer’s debut novel, Orphans Pursuit, brings to life a unique blend of fantasy and coming-of-age themes through the intriguing world of Ethra, a planet mirroring Earth yet distinctly different in its cultural and technological makeup. This story not only entertains but also provokes thought, weaving a rich narrative that resonates with readers. Today, we delve into the various elements of Orphans Pursuit that make it a must-read, from its engaging plot and character dynamics to the author’s personal journey in crafting this novel.

Ethra: A World Anchored in Honor and Ingenuity

At the core of Orphans Pursuit is the planet Ethra, characterized by its Earth-like qualities but set apart by its societal values and technological era reminiscent of the Civil War period. Ethra is a world where honor is paramount, and every individual’s worth is measured by their contributions to society. The uniqueness of Ethra lies not just in its technology but in its approach to personal abilities, which are akin to enhanced traits rather than conventional superpowers.

This backdrop sets the stage for his internal and external conflicts, as he struggles with his desires for personal identity and societal acceptance. The setting of Ethra, with its rich descriptions and intricate societal rules, provides a vivid canvas for Dustin’s story, making his journey all the more compelling.

Dustin’s Path to Self-Discovery: From Orphan to Trailblazer

Dustin’s narrative is the beating heart of Orphans Pursuit. His quest for a sense of belonging and purpose drives the plot forward, painting a portrait of a young man caught between the expectations imposed by his adoptive parents and his personal aspirations. His friend Arra plays a pivotal role, offering the encouragement Dustin needs to pursue his dreams without succumbing to the pressures of his environment.

Dustin’s ambitions lead him to the prestigious Academy of Military and Power, a crucible where future leaders are forged and where Dustin hopes to prove his mettle. The Academy serves as a microcosm of Ethra’s broader societal challenges, encapsulating the tensions between personal desires and communal duties. Dustin’s experiences at the Academy, filled with trials and triumphs, are a microcosm of his broader quest for identity and purpose in a divided world.

A Story of Casual Fantasy: Accessibility Meets Depth

Joshua Mercer’s approach to Orphans Pursuit is refreshingly accessible. He crafts a narrative that is easy to digest yet deep enough to engage readers looking for substance in their fantasy adventures. This balance makes the novel an ideal read for both avid fantasy enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre. Despite its casual tone, the novel explores profound themes like identity, honor, and the individual’s role in society, making it a meaningful exploration of universal issues wrapped in a fantastical package.

We had the privilege of interviewing Joshua Mercer. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Joshua, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about your book ‘Orphans Pursuit‘ with our readers.

Hi, this book was a passion project that I wrote as a learning experience for what it takes to write a fantasy. My goal was to write a coming-of-age book in a way that would be easy for readers to read and understand. I have a print copy of the book in the works that should be available before Christmas of 2024 if there are no delays.

I liked the idea of having the main character written in first person and then rewrote it in the first person perspective to give it a more personal perspective. This book has taken years to write, and I have gained a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to write fantasy.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Listening to feedback and making changes to the editor’s comments, along with my wife’s critiques, helped. Leaning on books I love for inspiration and writing a story that I enjoy.

Any message for our readers?

To the readers, I would say expect another book in the series at some point. I have plans for multiple other series that I’m prioritizing now, and I plan on speeding up my writing significantly now that I feel confident about my ability to tell a story. All will be fantasy books. So stay tuned in the next year for more to come.

Thank you so much, Joshua, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
