Critics Praise R. E. Chard’s ‘The Chronicles of Chad Ryker – Supernatural Justice’ As A Must-Read for Supernatural Fans

Author R. E. Chard’s Shadows of St. Ignatius kicks off The Chronicles of Chad Ryker: Supernatural Justice series with a gripping tale of mystery, suspense, and spiritual discovery. Set against the eerie backdrop of St. Ignatius Academy, this first book blends the thrill of a supernatural mystery with the coming-of-age challenges of a teenager trying to figure out where he fits in the world. It’s a captivating journey that holds readers’ attention and keeps them questioning what’s real and what’s not.

A Freshman’s Journey Into Darkness

Chad Ryker, a freshman at St. Ignatius Academy, isn’t your typical high school student. Raised on a sprawling horse farm and vineyard in California, he’s used to hard work, family values, and a strong sense of faith. But the moment he steps onto the campus of St. Ignatius, everything changes. The Jesuit high school, known for its prestigious academic reputation, is steeped in history, and not all of it is peaceful.

Strange occurrences begin to unfold around Chad. Whispers in the hallways, shadows that move of their own accord, and unsettling visions haunt him day and night. It doesn’t take long for Chad to realize that St. Ignatius holds more than just academic challenges—there are secrets lurking within the walls that are far older, and darker, than anything he could have imagined. As the supernatural forces at play draw him deeper into their web, Chad must confront his worst fears.

The Mystery of the Heart of Ignatius

What starts as a series of inexplicable events quickly becomes a full-fledged mystery. After stumbling across an abandoned chapel and witnessing a group performing strange rituals, Chad uncovers the true nature of the battle that’s been unfolding for centuries. This battle is between forces of light and darkness, and Chad is at the center of it all. He learns of an ancient artifact, the Heart of Ignatius, which holds untold power—and a connection to his own lineage.

It’s not long before Chad realizes that he’s a key player in a much larger, supernatural struggle. With the help of his best friend Kara, a tech whiz with a quick mind, and Leo, a conspiracy-loving classmate, Chad begins to piece together the puzzle. Each clue they uncover seems to push them closer to a terrifying truth. And as the tension builds, the stakes grow higher.

Faith, Fear, and the Fight for the Future

Chad’s journey is one of self-discovery. He’s forced to confront his own fears, doubts, and questions about faith. In a world where the supernatural is real and the lines between good and evil blur, Chad must decide if he’s ready to take up the mantle of protector. The Heart of Ignatius and the prophecy that binds him to it may hold the key to saving or destroying everything he knows.

At its core, Shadows of St. Ignatius is about personal growth and finding the courage to face one’s own inner demons. Chad’s story is about more than just surviving the supernatural—it’s about embracing the light, even when it feels like the shadows are closing in.

The Writing and Themes

R. E. Chard has crafted a world that’s rich with atmosphere and intrigue. The blend of mystery, supernatural suspense, and spiritual exploration creates a narrative that’s both thrilling and thought-provoking. Each chapter feels like it’s pulling you deeper into a web of secrets, and just when you think you’ve figured something out, a new twist throws everything into doubt.

What sets this book apart is its emotional depth. While the supernatural elements are undeniably compelling, it’s the personal stakes that truly resonate. Chad isn’t just fighting to uncover the truth—he’s grappling with his own identity, faith, and place in the world. As he uncovers more about St. Ignatius and its dark history, he also uncovers more about himself and his role in the larger cosmic battle.

This combination of mystery and emotional depth is what makes Shadows of St. Ignatius a standout. It’s a page-turner for fans of supernatural thrillers, and it’s a story that invites readers to reflect on their own journeys of faith, courage, and the search for meaning.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is R. E. Chard, and I’m the author of the *Chad Ryker* series—a supernatural thriller saga that explores the tension between faith and fear, light and darkness. By day, I work in education and nonprofit leadership, but writing has always been the compass guiding my inner world. I create stories that invite readers to imagine themselves in moments of moral and spiritual consequence—and to ask what they would do if faced with the same shadows.

Please tell us about your book.

*Shadows of St. Ignatius* is the first book in the *Chad Ryker* series. It follows a teenager who enrolls at a Catholic high school in California only to discover that the halls hold secrets far older—and darker—than he imagined. It’s part mystery, part spiritual coming-of-age, and part supernatural thriller. The revised edition, just released, strengthens the pacing while deepening the emotional and theological undercurrents that run through the series. At its core, it’s a story about what it means to carry the light when everything around you grows dim.

Please tell us about your journey.

This story began in conversation—with my son, Camden. He asked questions about faith and fear that led to the creation of Chad Ryker, a character who feels very real to us both. What started as a bedtime story became a manuscript, then a series. I first self-published *Shadows*, but after strong reviews and reader feedback, I revisited the text, revised it, and began working with agents and publishers to expand its reach. Now the series includes full-length novels and novellas, all interconnected, forming a literary universe that has taken on a life of its own.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The first was listening—really listening—to readers, to my own inner compass, and to the characters who seemed to speak when I stayed out of their way. I also committed to discipline: writing every day, editing ruthlessly, and never being afraid to revise something that wasn’t working. Finally, I stayed grounded in the idea that a story can be both thrilling and meaningful—that readers are hungry for adventure, yes, but also for truth.

Any message for our readers?

Imagination isn’t just for escaping the world—it’s a way of entering it more deeply. That’s something I’ve learned from St. Ignatius, from my characters, and from the readers who’ve reached out to say that Chad’s story helped them see their own in a new light. So keep reading. Keep imagining. And never be afraid of the shadows—they’re often where the light begins.

Thank you so much, R. E. Chard, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
