Tyree’s Colorful Quest
Every child loves a good mystery, and Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys by Gillian Joseph delivers one wrapped in color, counting, and curiosity. This playful picture book takes children ages two to five on a tropical adventure filled with surprises. Tyree, the main character, hears about green monkeys living at The Tropical Resort. With determination in his heart, he sets off to find them, only to discover something unexpected along the way.
The book’s charm lies in how it combines storytelling with exploration. Children aren’t simply listening to a tale. They’re joining Tyree as he wanders through gardens, beaches, and island corners, counting animals, pointing at plants, and noticing details that brighten every page. The result is a lively reading experience that entertains while gently encouraging early learning.
The playful adventure shines thanks to the extraordinary illustrations by Prabir Sakar, whose art breathes life into every page.
A Playful Blend of Learning and Fun
When parents and teachers look for children’s books, they often hope to find something that balances fun with education. This is exactly what Gillian Joseph achieves. Tyree’s story is more than an adventure. It’s also a natural introduction to colors, numbers, and the environment.
Children count alongside Tyree as he meets animals in surprising places. They notice shades of green and discover that not everything described as “green” looks exactly the same. Each page becomes an opportunity to ask questions: How many animals are there? What color is that plant? Where might the monkeys be hiding?
These moments spark curiosity, which is at the heart of learning. The book never feels like a lesson disguised as a story. Instead, it feels like an adventure that children want to repeat again and again. The more they engage, the more they absorb.
Illustrations That Invite Exploration
The illustrations in Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys burst with tropical energy. Bright beaches, leafy gardens, and playful animals create scenes that are rich with detail. Children can spend time scanning each page, noticing new elements during every read.
For younger readers, the visuals provide a foundation. Even before they recognize the words, they’re pointing at animals, identifying colors, and reacting to Tyree’s expressions. For slightly older children, the illustrations act as clues, helping them predict what Tyree might find next.
The artwork supports the interactive nature of the story. Reading aloud becomes an active experience rather than a quiet one. Adults and children laugh together, count together, and share discoveries. This shared activity builds connections while reinforcing the joy of reading.
Perfect for Families and Classrooms
The beauty of this picture book is its flexibility. At home, it works as a bedtime favorite, giving children a chance to end their day with a cheerful adventure. In classrooms, it becomes a useful read-aloud that can lead to lessons about counting, colors, and even the diversity of animals. In libraries, it shines as a story-time selection that keeps groups of children engaged.
Because of its layered design, the book grows with its readers. A toddler may focus on the animals and the rhythm of the story. A preschooler may take more interest in the numbers and patterns. As children develop, the same story continues to offer something new. That lasting appeal makes it a book families will return to often.
The Inspiration Behind the Story
Gillian Joseph drew inspiration for this debut book from her own tropical travels. She’s passionate about bringing the wonder of discovery into children’s lives, and Tyree’s journey reflects that spirit. Her goal is to create books that encourage children to notice the world around them with fresh eyes.
As a children’s book author, Gillian focuses on early childhood learning. She blends imagination with educational value, making her stories both enjoyable and meaningful. Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys captures her approach perfectly. It’s adventurous and lighthearted, yet filled with opportunities for growth. Families, teachers, and librarians can see the care behind every page.
Why Children Will Ask for It Again
What sets this book apart is the combination of humor, surprise, and engagement. Children are naturally curious, and Tyree mirrors that spirit. His determination to find the green monkeys resonates with young readers, who often approach the world with the same eagerness.
By the end, the “not-so-green” monkeys add a twist that children love. It’s the kind of ending that sparks giggles and questions. Why aren’t they green? What other surprises might be hiding in the tropical resort? These playful details keep the story fresh, even after multiple readings.
A Book to Treasure
Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys isn’t just a counting book. It’s a celebration of exploration, courage, and learning through play. With Gillian Joseph’s lively storytelling and vivid illustrations, children are invited to join Tyree on an adventure they’ll remember.

We had the privilege of interviewing Gillian Joseph. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Gillian, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hello, I’m a mom, a mom-in-chief. That’s the title I’m most proud of—and the only one I need. My journey to writing Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys began in Barbados. I went looking for the island’s famous green monkeys—first at a tropical resort, then finally I found them at the Wildlife Reserve. That real-life adventure inspired me to turn the experience into a children’s picture book—an interactive story about counting, nature, and discovering how amazing our planet really is.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I believe stories are powerful. My strategy for success? Telling a true story that children can connect with.
