A Melodic Masterpiece: ElectricBassoon’s “Happy New Year Song” Inspires Hope for 2025

A Melodic Wish for the New Year

https://open.spotify.com/track/3fhauG68po9Mf38b5uQihL When the holidays roll around, most people expect a stream of Christmas tunes and cheerful carols floating through the air. Yet, when it comes to New Year’s Eve, the musical landscape can feel surprisingly sparse. Sure, the countdowns and noisy celebrations are exciting, but there’s often a lack of softer, more thoughtful songs tailored to that moment of transition. That’s where “First Thing I Want to Say (Happy New Year Song)” by Michael Sorensen, also known as ElectricBassoon steps in. Released on December 8, 2024, this track offers a tender alternative to the usual holiday playlist and invites listeners to approach the coming year with honesty and warmth.

Reflecting on Life’s Journey

https://youtu.be/pwxu96qsaIM?feature=shared The story behind this piece is as personal and heartfelt as one could imagine. After enduring a few challenging years, ElectricBassoon set out to create a meaningful gift for his wife. Instead of promising grand resolutions or throwing a flashy New Year’s party, he decided to put his feelings into song. This quiet and reflective track embraces the idea that life doesn’t always go as planned. With two daughters now in primary school and a busy family life pulling in many directions, he realized that things rarely unfold exactly as envisioned. Though that truth can feel bittersweet, this composition frames it as a gentle reminder: one can still cherish love, togetherness, and small victories. It’s not about ignoring life’s hurdles or pretending that everything went perfectly. Rather, the song acknowledges those missed goals and delayed dreams. The artist’s hope is that listeners will understand they aren’t alone in their struggles. New Year’s Eve can be a time of pressure, as people measure their achievements against towering expectations. ElectricBassoon’s tune suggests that it’s perfectly reasonable to feel off-track and that the important thing is holding onto gratitude and hope for what lies ahead.

From Classical Training to a Fresh Sound

ElectricBassoon didn’t simply stumble into making music. He pursued his passion through rigorous academic training, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Trinity College of Music and a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Music, completing his studies in 2004. In the years since, he has ventured into countless musical territories—performing with orchestras, dabbling in jazz bands, exploring rock groups, and carving out a space for his own projects. Although he started in the classical realm, he’s never been boxed in by a single genre. Audiences looking for a unique twist can even find him performing Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” on electric bassoon on YouTube.

This broad musical background informs the production of “First Thing I Want to Say (Happy New Year Song).” It’s a piece that nods to classical training while embracing a contemporary sensibility. Kaska Records played a key role in bringing the composition to life, adding orchestral depth, drums, percussion, and collaborating internationally to include guitar and bass from a friend in Germany. The track is a testament to how talent and empathy can merge across borders to produce something beautifully cohesive.

A Personal Gift That Resonates Universally

What started as a heartfelt gesture to one person soon grew into something larger. When ElectricBassoon played the song for his wife on New Year’s Eve—before the guests arrived—it touched her deeply. She encouraged him to share it with the world. The result is a track available on multiple platforms: YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify. Listeners who stumble upon it might find themselves pausing to think about their own lives, their loved ones, and the quiet hope that even if last year didn’t go as planned, there’s a chance to move forward with understanding and love. His gratitude extends to everyone who helped make the track possible, especially the team working out of Ukraine who contributed their time and skill. Their efforts helped transform a personal message into a refined recording that anyone can enjoy. This global collaboration is another gentle reminder that good things can emerge even from challenging times—art and community can transcend circumstances and distances.

Embracing the Next Chapter

At its core, “First Thing I Want to Say (Happy New Year Song)” is about acceptance and reassurance. Life rarely fits into neat checklists, and most people carry some regrets into the next year. ElectricBassoon’s track encourages everyone to accept that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Instead of feeling anxious about missed opportunities, listeners are invited to enter the New Year grateful for what they have, hopeful for what might come, and reminded that love remains the anchor through it all. So as another year draws to a close, those tuning in to this understated gem might find comfort and validation. It doesn’t demand confetti and loud cheers. Instead, it gently suggests that acknowledging life’s imperfections can lead to meaningful growth. With this song as a companion, facing the future might feel a little less daunting and a little more hopeful—exactly what a new year should be.

We had the privilege of interviewing the Music Artist Michael Sorensen. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Trinity College of Music and a Master degree from the Royal College of Music, graduating in 2004. Since then, I’ve played in numerous different genres, including orchestras, jazz bands, rock bands, etc, as well as making my own music. Although I studied classical music, I always played many genres; check out the Electric Bassoon playing Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix on YouTube! Writing my own music has always been important to me, a way to express myself, whether the lyrics are about something or someone specific or just a made-up story. It’s always fun to see a project go from an idea to being completed.

Please tell us about your Song.

Work and family life have gotten in the way now that I have 2 daughters who are both in primary school. The latest song came about after a few difficult years. Every New Year’s Eve, my wife and I would look back and wonder where the time had gone and that we’d not accomplished as much as we wanted to.

The next year, I wanted to do something for my wife, and I wrote her this song. There are so many great Christmas songs, but I don’t really hear many New Year’s songs on the radio, so I thought I would write my wife a song for New Year. I also didn’t want to be too cliche and sing about resolutions and it being ‘Party Time’, just a more laid back; a chance for me to say that we’re not quite where we thought we’d be but that’s ok, I still love you, let’s be thankful for what we have.

Also, I think it was important for me to look at how I was and if I could have been a better husband. I wrote the song and played it for her on New Year’s Eve before all the guests arrived. She fell in love with the song and said we should release it. I contacted Kaska Records to help with the orchestra parts, and seeing what a great job he did, I also got him to record Drums, Percussion, and through his friend in Germany Guitar and Bass. They also mixed and mastered the track. I’m so grateful to Anatoly, Oleksandr, and everyone there who worked on the track. Can you believe they’re in Ukraine? With the war going on and still managing to make music, amazing people! And all the best to them!

In summary, I hope that people will be able to relate to the song and maybe even take some comfort and inspiration from it.
