Sexy Menopause by Lisa Fitzpatrick Offers an Informed Perspective on Intimacy, Ageing and Self-Trust

Menopause can bring unexpected changes to the body, relationships, emotions, and sense of identity. For many women, those changes arrive with too little guidance and years of cultural messaging that associates ageing with fading desirability.

In Sexy Menopause: The New Science and Soul of Midlife Desire, Lisa Fitzpatrick offers another way to understand this life stage. Set to arrive in October 2026, the book invites women to approach menopause with knowledge, curiosity, self-compassion, and an awareness of their own sacred power.

When the Body Begins a New Conversation

A changing libido can leave women wondering whether they’ll ever feel like themselves again. Vaginal dryness, painful sex, shifts in arousal, and pelvic floor concerns may also affect intimacy and confidence. These experiences are deeply personal, yet they’re shared by countless women around the world.

Sexy Menopause brings such concerns into a welcoming and informed conversation. Drawing from over three decades of professional experience, Lisa explores the biological reasons behind changes in desire and explains how pelvic health influences comfort, pleasure, and sexual wellbeing. Readers receive practical knowledge that can help them understand what their bodies are communicating.

The book also looks at emotional safety and its influence on intimacy. Desire can be shaped by relationship dynamics, stress, personal history, body image, and the freedom to express individual needs. Recognising these connections can help women develop a more compassionate view of their sexuality.

This approach makes the book relevant to women with many different experiences. Some may be seeking answers about physical symptoms. Others may want to rebuild confidence, reconnect with pleasure, or better understand an emerging sense of personal power. Each reader is encouraged to honour her own pace and needs.

The Story Behind a Sacred Disruption

Lisa originally had no plan to write a book called Sexy Menopause. Like many women, she entered midlife carrying cultural beliefs she had absorbed over many years. Ageing appeared connected to becoming less visible, desirable, and relevant. Her clinical work had already shown her how deeply these messages could affect women.

Week after week, patients brought private questions into her consulting room. They wanted to know why sex had become uncomfortable, where their libido had gone, and whether their current experiences were simply part of growing older. Their questions were accompanied by grief, isolation, and embarrassment.

Then Lisa experienced her own menopause alongside the unexpected ending of a long-term relationship. The combined transition unsettled her understanding of love, worth, security, and the future. She went through periods of heartbreak and uncertainty while asking herself whether life’s most fulfilling chapters had already passed.

Healing gradually revealed a different meaning. Menopause became a threshold that encouraged deeper honesty, healthier boundaries, and a return to her authentic voice. This period opened a path toward greater self-awareness and helped her recognise the potential for emotional and spiritual awakening during midlife.

Conversations with women in workshops, therapy sessions, social media communities, and private correspondence confirmed that information was only part of what they needed. They were also searching for permission to desire freely, speak openly, and stop apologising for occupying space. Many wanted reassurance that pleasure, sexuality, love, and meaningful connection remain possible at every age.

These encounters shaped a book that brings clinical understanding together with lived experience. Its pages explore the science of pleasure and arousal, body confidence, pelvic wellbeing, emotional security, and what women wish men understood about menopause. The result is a thoughtful guide for women and a valuable source of insight for the people who love them.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

I’m Lisa Fitzpatrick, an Australian physiotherapist, author, speaker and women’s pelvic and sexual-health specialist. I have worked as a physiotherapist for more than 30 years and am the founder of Womankind Pelvic Care Physiotherapy in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.

My clinical work supports women experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, prolapse, incontinence, pelvic pain, painful sex, birth-related concerns and the physical and sexual changes associated with menopause. I am also the author of Sexy Menopause, an evidence-informed and empowering guide to helping women understand their changing bodies and reclaim confidence, pleasure and self-trust during midlife.

Alongside my clinical work, I write and speak about menopause, pelvic health, women’s sexuality, feminine leadership and the deeper transformation that can occur in the second half of a woman’s life.

Please tell us about your journey.

I graduated as a physiotherapist in 1993 and have now spent more than three decades working with the human body. Over time, I became increasingly drawn to women’s pelvic and sexual health—an area that profoundly affects quality of life but has historically been surrounded by silence. Through thousands of conversations and more than 6,000 pelvic floor examinations, I witnessed how often women felt frightened, ashamed, or alone in their experiences. Many had never been given clear information about their pelvic floor, vaginal health, sexual function or the changes that can accompany menopause. I also saw that menopause was too often presented solely as a medical problem rather than a significant biological, emotional and personal rite of passage.

My own experience of midlife deepened my understanding of this transition and inspired me to write Sexy Menopause. I wanted to create the book I felt women deserved: scientifically grounded, clinically useful, compassionate, honest and unafraid to talk about sexuality and pleasure.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

One of the most important strategies has been listening deeply to the women I serve. My work has developed from the real questions, fears, and experiences women have shared with me in the privacy of the clinic room. Their stories revealed what was missing from the broader conversation about menopause and pelvic health.

Any message for our readers

Menopause is not the end. It’s a holy invitation to greater authenticity and reinvention.

Thank you so much, Lisa Fitzpatrick, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
