Embarking on the journey to motherhood is both exhilarating and daunting. Now, imagine undertaking this life-changing experience while living in a foreign country, where familiar support systems are miles away, and everyday tasks come with cultural and linguistic challenges. This is the unique path that Jessica Gabrielzyk explores in her insightful new book, Maternity Abroad: Becoming a Mother in a Foreign Land.
A Global Citizen’s Journey to Motherhood
Jessica’s life is a tapestry of international adventures. Born in Brazil, she spent a decade soaking up the sun and surf in Australia after high school. Her quest for new experiences then led her to the historic streets of Portugal, the lush landscapes of Ireland, and ultimately to the scenic vistas of Switzerland, where she currently resides. Along the way, she became adept at finding hidden gems in every new place she called home.
However, when she discovered she was pregnant while abroad, Jessica faced a new kind of adventure. She reminisces about the first time she held a friend’s newborn, feeling as though she were cradling a delicate piece of glass. The prospect of becoming a mother in a foreign land brought back that mix of awe and apprehension. Without her familiar network, she anticipated piecing together a complex puzzle on her own.
Crafting a Guide for Expatriate Mothers
Realizing the scarcity of resources for expectant mothers living overseas, Jessica decided to fill the void herself. Maternity Abroad is the culmination of her experiences and a heartfelt guide designed to support women navigating pregnancy and early motherhood away from home. The book is rich with practical advice and easy-to-understand information, making it an invaluable companion for expatriate moms.
Key topics covered include:
- Navigating Prenatal Care Abroad: Tips on understanding different healthcare systems, finding trustworthy medical professionals, and overcoming language barriers during appointments.
- Citizenship and Legal Considerations: Guidance on the complexities of citizenship rights for children born abroad and the necessary legal steps for parents.
- Understanding Local Birthing Practices: Insights into cultural norms and medical procedures related to childbirth in various countries.
- Parental Leave Policies: Information on navigating the often complicated parental leave laws and benefits in your host country.
- Pediatric Healthcare and Postpartum Support: Advice on securing quality healthcare for your child and finding support networks for the postpartum period.
Voices from Around the Globe
What sets Maternity Abroad apart is the inclusion of personal stories from mothers across different continents. Jessica collaborated with families from Japan to Africa, Australia to North America, capturing a diverse array of experiences. These narratives provide comfort and solidarity, reminding readers that they are not alone in their journey.
The book also features insights from international experts in fields such as healthcare, law, and psychology. Their professional perspectives add depth and reliability to the guidance offered, ensuring that readers have access to well-rounded information.
Building a Community Beyond Borders
Jessica’s warm and conversational writing style makes the book accessible and engaging. She shares her own vulnerabilities and triumphs, creating a genuine connection with her readers. One of the central themes is the importance of building a supportive community, even when far from home.
She offers practical advice on:
- Connecting with Other Expat Moms: Finding local groups, online forums, and social networks that cater to expatriate families.
- Embracing Cultural Differences: Learning from and integrating into the local culture to enrich your family’s experience.
- Maintaining Long-Distance Relationships: Keeping in touch with loved ones back home to preserve important support systems.
Why Maternity Abroad Resonates Today
In an increasingly globalized world, more women find themselves starting families in countries different from where they grew up. Yet, resources tailored to their unique challenges are limited. Jessica’s book addresses this gap with empathy and practicality, making it a timely and relevant guide.
Whether you’re planning a move abroad, have recently relocated, or are already navigating motherhood in a foreign land, Maternity Abroad offers valuable insights. It serves not just as a manual but as a companion that understands and addresses the emotional and logistical hurdles you may face.
Embracing the Adventure of Motherhood Abroad
Ultimately, Maternity Abroad is a celebration of resilience and adaptability. Jessica encourages mothers to embrace the adventure, find joy in new experiences, and recognize the strength they possess. She reminds readers that while the journey may be challenging, it’s also an opportunity for personal growth and building a rich, multicultural family life.
Her story—and those of the mothers featured—highlights that while motherhood may come with uncertainties, especially in a foreign setting, it also brings unique rewards. The shared experiences create a tapestry of global motherhood that is both inspiring and reassuring.

We had the privilege of interviewing Jessica Gabrielzyk. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi Jessica, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hi there! I’m a Brazilian by birth, but I’ve been a global citizen for most of my life. After high school, I lived in Australia for ten years, then spent time hopping between Portugal, Ireland, and now Switzerland. I’m an author, a mom, and someone who loves finding hidden gems in every new place I call home.
Recently, I’ve poured my experiences into my book, Maternity Abroad, a guide for moms navigating the unique adventure of pregnancy and parenting in a foreign land. I also had the privilege of working with amazing professionals and interviewing families from all over the world — from Japan to Africa, Australia, Europe, North America — you name it!
Please tell us about your book.

The book also includes stories from mothers across the globe and insights from experts to help you feel less alone on this journey. It’s the book I wish I’d had when I was navigating pregnancy far from home. If you’re planning to move, already unpacked, or just curious about parenting in a different culture, this book is for you!
Please tell us about your journey.
My journey has been all about discovery and adaptation. I left Brazil after high school to study in Australia, where I spent ten years. Then, life took me to Europe, living in Portugal, Ireland, and now Switzerland. Each move brought new challenges, from understanding healthcare systems to finding community, but it also gave me a deeper appreciation for the diversity of motherhood experiences worldwide.
When I became pregnant while living abroad, I realized how much support I needed — and how hard it was to navigate without a local family network. This inspired me to write Maternity Abroad, so no mom has to feel as lost or alone as I did.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
- Building connections: Talking to other moms from different cultures taught me so much about resilience and adaptability.
- Staying curious: Each challenge became an opportunity to learn and grow.
- Learning to ask for help: It’s not always easy, but reaching out to experts or local communities made a huge difference.
- Finding joy in the chaos: Whether it’s cooking with the wrong ingredients or trying to understand a new language, laughter always helps.
