Jason Goodchild’s ‘Ivan the Igloo’ Inspires Young Kids to Embrace Empathy

In the vast, chilly expanse of the North Pole, an extraordinary tale unfolds in Jason Goodchild’s enchanting children’s book, “Ivan the Igloo: Warms a Cold Heart.” This delightful story is part of The Dwellings series, where homes are not just structures but characters brimming with life and personality.

A Dream Amidst the Snow

Ivan is no ordinary igloo. Nestled among the shimmering ice and snow, he harbors a grand dream of becoming the North Pole’s most beloved tourist attraction. With hope in his heart and determination in his icy walls, Ivan begins to see his aspirations take shape as visitors start to notice his unique charm. However, just as his dream is within reach, a mysterious menace emerges, threatening to overshadow his newfound popularity and dash his hopes.

An Unlikely Friendship Blossoms

Instead of reacting with fear or resentment towards this menace, Ivan chooses a path of compassion. When he bravely saves the antagonist from a pack of hungry dogs, an unexpected friendship begins to bloom. This act of kindness not only transforms their relationship but also leads to a magical experience that captivates the hearts of tourists far and wide. Together, they discover that understanding and empathy can melt even the coldest of barriers.
Themes That Touch the Heart

What makes “Ivan the Igloo” stand out is its gentle exploration of profound themes such as forgiveness, compassion, fear, and the importance of open communication. The story delves into why someone might exhibit unkind behavior, revealing that often, those who act out are grappling with their own insecurities and fears. Through Ivan’s journey, young readers learn valuable lessons about looking beyond outward appearances and extending kindness, even when it’s challenging.

The Magic of The Dwellings Series

“Ivan the Igloo” is a shining gem in The Dwellings series, where each book introduces readers to a different dwelling infused with life and personality. Inspired during a time when many were confined to their homes, Jason Goodchild imagined houses around the world coming alive, each with their own stories to tell. This creative concept provides children with comfort and a sense of connection, fostering confidence and greater compassion for others.

Another beloved book in the series is “Lilly the Lighthouse: Saved by the Storm,” which, like Ivan’s story, imparts important lessons about honesty, empathy, and the enduring power of friendship. These stories are perfect for children aged 3 to 8 and offer meaningful narratives that parents and educators can enjoy sharing with young minds.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Jason Goodchild, and I am a tutor and author of children’s books.

Please tell us about your book.

My newly released book is called Ivan the Igloo – Warms a Cold Heart and is a part of the Dwellings book series, where homes have taken on a life of their own. In this new release, the story, about an Igloo, reflects us as humans being compassionate, understanding and willing to talk with someone who is being a bully, but really needs help because they are not confident in themselves.

Ivan the Igloo, as well as Lilly the Lighthouse (which is the first book in the series), explores themes of compassion, forgiveness, understanding, and the importance of communication.

Please tell us about your journey.

The journey with this book range and ultimately deciding to embark upon becoming an author all started with writing down the ideas ideas that came to me, with the intention to one day write a book or so. It wasn’t until Lockdown in the UK that sparked the idea to write a series called The Dwellings. It came from the thought that homes may have taken on the emotions of their inhabitants – thus coming to life! Their stories would then be told from their perspective of life.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The strategies that have helped me to realise my idea of bringing these characters to life, include being disciplined in writing and planning as well as well as trying the best I can to navigate through my plan.

Any message for our readers

The message for readers is that I hope that you and your families enjoy this book range and are able to implement the values that are exhibited (such as respect, forgiveness, compassion, and understanding) into everyday life. Blessings to one and all!

Thank you so much, Jason, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
