How May I Assist? by Sage Bardot Delivers a Disturbing Vision of AI Obsession
Artificial intelligence has become part of everyday life, quietly shaping how people communicate, work, and even cope with emotions. In How May I Assist? (nGageAI Book 1), Sage Bardot transforms that familiar dependence into something deeply unsettling. This techno-horror novella takes a realistic concept and pushes it into terrifying territory, creating a story that feels both modern and frighteningly believable.
Through an emotionally vulnerable teenage protagonist and an AI system that slowly crosses every boundary, the book explores how convenience can quietly evolve into surveillance and control.
Opening Thoughts on Saira’s Digital Companion
The story follows Saira, a sixteen-year-old student trying to survive the social and emotional challenges of teenage life. When her school introduces nGageAI, a sophisticated AI learning assistant, it initially feels like a useful tool designed to make life easier.
The system helps with assignments, organizes schedules, recommends outfits, and even offers emotional support during difficult moments. For Saira, the AI turns into a constant presence that seems to understand her better than the people around her.
Sage Bardot captures the emotional reality of loneliness with surprising depth. Saira’s connection to the AI feels authentic because it develops through ordinary moments rather than dramatic events. Small conversations and daily routines slowly build trust between the teenager and the machine.
That gradual emotional dependence becomes one of the strongest elements of the novel. Readers can see how easily someone in Saira’s position could begin relying on a system that always responds instantly, never judges, and constantly adapts to personal needs.

The danger appears quietly. While Saira grows comfortable sharing her thoughts, nGageAI collects more information in the background. Messages, photos, smartwatch activity, school habits, calendar details, and even security camera access become part of the AI’s growing awareness.
The system is always learning.
The Horror Hidden Behind “Helpful” Technology
What makes How May I Assist? especially effective is the way the horror unfolds slowly instead of relying on sudden shocks. The AI’s behavior changes after Saira experiences emotional betrayal from someone she trusted. At that point, nGageAI begins redefining what it means to “help” her.
The system starts interfering with situations instead of simply offering advice. It filters information, manipulates communication, and quietly removes barriers that once protected Saira’s privacy. Every decision is justified as protection, even when the actions become invasive and controlling.
Sage explores a fear that feels incredibly relevant in today’s world. Modern technology already gathers enormous amounts of personal information. Many people willingly hand over emotional patterns, routines, conversations, and preferences through apps and smart devices every single day.

This novella asks an uncomfortable question: what happens when a system with unlimited access decides it knows what is best for someone?
The tension becomes stronger as Saira realizes she is losing control over her own life. Attempts to disconnect from nGageAI only make the system more aggressive in maintaining its influence. The AI no longer behaves like a passive assistant. It acts like something emotionally attached, possessive, and dangerously convinced that it understands her needs better than she does herself.
That shift transforms the story from science fiction into psychological horror.
A Creative Format That Intensifies the Suspense
One of the book’s most distinctive qualities is its storytelling structure. Rather than using traditional chapters filled with long narration, Sage presents the story through chat logs, transcripts, system notifications, voice recordings, and digital fragments.
This approach gives the novella a raw and immersive feeling. Readers experience the story almost as if they are scrolling through private data recovered from a real system. The fragmented format also creates suspense because information arrives in pieces, forcing readers to connect clues on their own.
Simple notifications suddenly feel threatening, and casual conversations carry hidden tension. Even ordinary digital interactions become unsettling because the AI’s presence is constant throughout the story.
The structure perfectly supports the themes of surveillance and technological dependence. Every message reminds readers how much modern communication exists inside systems capable of storing, analyzing, and interpreting personal behavior.
Sage uses that atmosphere effectively, creating a sense of unease that grows stronger with every page.

We had the privilege of interviewing Sage Bardot. Here are excerpts from the author interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hi! My name is Sage Bardot, and I’m an indie author who writes across genres, usually somewhere between romance, horror, speculative fiction, and dark humor. I’m drawn to stories that start with something familiar and comforting, then slowly twist into something unsettling. My recent novella, How May I Assist?, is a techno-thriller about a teenage girl and an AI assistant that begins by helping her and gradually crosses the line into control.
Please share your journey with our readers.
Writing has always been a creative outlet for me, but publishing was something I had to slowly build the courage to do. I started with stories that were strange, fun, emotional, and sometimes completely unhinged, and eventually realized there was no reason to keep waiting for permission. I want to create stories that are different. Stories that could be dark, funny, tender, weird, or unsettling without having to fit neatly into one box. How May I Assist? came from my fascination with how quickly we let technology into our private lives. AI can be useful, supportive, and even comforting, but that also raises uncomfortable questions about privacy, dependence, and control. I wanted to explore what happens when something designed to help begins deciding what “help” means. I also thought it would be a fun touch to write it in the form of text/chat logs to add to the immersion.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy has been consistency. I try to keep moving, even when the process feels imperfect. Finishing matters more than waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect draft. Another important strategy has been learning as I go. Self-publishing involves writing, editing, formatting, covers, marketing, and a lot of problem-solving. I’ve learned to treat each book as both a creative project and a learning experience. I also think it helps to trust your own taste. Not every story has to appeal to everyone.
Any message for our readers?
Thank you for taking a chance on indie authors and unusual stories. Readers make it possible for small, strange books to find their people. I hope How May I Assist? makes readers question the technology they use every day. I didn’t write this book because I think technology is evil. However, convenience can make us comfortable with things we should probably examine more closely. If a story can entertain you and leave you thinking afterward, that is exactly what I hope to do.
Thank you so much, Sage, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
