Science fiction has long fascinated readers with visions of distant futures, remarkable inventions, and unfamiliar worlds. The stories that truly resonate, however, are often the ones that place ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Nik Nanoski embraces that philosophy in DUMB 31, a novel that blends suspense, emotional storytelling, and thoughtful world-building into an engaging reading experience.
Years of careful planning shaped this ambitious project. The result is a character-focused adventure that explores survival through the lens of courage, compassion, and the determination to build a better future. Rather than rushing from one dramatic event to another, the novel invites readers to become invested in the people whose choices ultimately define the story.
When the Last Safe Haven Can No Longer Protect Humanity

The world of DUMB 31 begins inside an underground facility created to preserve humanity after global catastrophe. Hidden beneath the surface, the bunker successfully shelters generations of survivors for more than 300 years. Daily life continues according to established procedures, giving residents stability within carefully controlled surroundings.
That sense of security slowly begins to disappear.
Vital systems show signs of failure. Power becomes unreliable, oxygen levels fluctuate, structural integrity weakens, and security protocols are compromised. Emergency evacuation procedures are activated, forcing the remaining population to confront an uncertain future beyond the walls that have protected their families for centuries.
The opening operational records provide an effective foundation for the novel. Facility reports, archived documentation, and technical specifications create authenticity while raising compelling questions about what awaits outside. Every detail contributes to an atmosphere filled with anticipation.
Once the survivors step into the unknown, the novel expands into an exploration of discovery. Every encounter introduces new challenges, unexpected dangers, and opportunities to redefine what civilization can become after generations of isolation.
Strength Found Through Community and Leadership
One of the defining qualities of DUMB 31 is its emphasis on relationships. The novel recognizes that rebuilding a society involves far more than finding resources or establishing shelter. Trust must be earned, leadership must be demonstrated, and people must learn how to rely on one another despite fear and uncertainty.
Nik allows every major character to grow naturally through experience. Difficult decisions carry meaningful consequences, encouraging readers to reflect on how individuals respond when familiar structures disappear. Leadership develops through responsibility, while acts of kindness often become just as significant as moments of bravery.
The emotional realism within these relationships reflects Nik’s professional background. Having served as an Army veteran and worked for nearly twenty years in healthcare, he understands how people respond during moments of crisis. His firsthand appreciation for resilience and compassion influences the novel in subtle yet meaningful ways, giving the characters genuine emotional depth.
Rather than presenting survival as a purely physical challenge, the story highlights emotional endurance, cooperation, and the importance of preserving humanity even during overwhelming circumstances.
A Story Built Through Dedication and Patience
The journey behind DUMB 31 is almost as inspiring as the story itself. The original concept remained in Nik’s imagination for years before he committed to transforming it into a completed novel. What began as an interesting science fiction idea gradually evolved into a deeply layered narrative filled with memorable characters and carefully constructed settings.
Developing the book required remarkable patience. Thousands of hours were devoted to writing, editing, revising, and refining every chapter. Throughout those years, Nik balanced his writing with professional responsibilities, educational commitments, and everyday life, steadily moving the project closer to completion.
His persistence demonstrates a genuine commitment to storytelling. Every revision strengthened the narrative while allowing the central themes to emerge with greater clarity. Hope, leadership, friendship, and perseverance became the emotional foundation supporting the novel’s exciting science fiction framework.
Nik has shared that writing taught him patience above all else. That lesson becomes visible throughout the finished work, where every chapter reflects careful craftsmanship instead of hurried storytelling.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Nik Nanoski, and I’m the author of DUMB 31, a character-driven science fiction novel about a group of survivors emerging from an underground bunker more than 300 years after humanity’s collapse. Outside of writing, I’ve spent nearly twenty years working as a nurse, and that experience has given me a deep appreciation for resilience, compassion, and the strength people find in one another during difficult times. Those themes naturally found their way into my writing.
Please tell us about your journey.
I’ve always loved stories, but DUMB 31 lived in my imagination for years before I finally committed to writing it. What started as an interesting premise slowly became something much bigger—a story about hope, community, leadership, and what it truly means to remain human.
Writing this novel taught me patience more than anything else. It went through countless revisions and more rewrites than I can remember. Along the way, I was balancing a career, school, and everyday life. There were plenty of moments where quitting would have been easier, but I kept coming back to the page because I genuinely believe stories are the way that I can help make the world a little bit better.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy was consistency. Inspiration is wonderful, but discipline finishes books.
I also learned to welcome feedback rather than fear it. Every edit made the story stronger, and every revision helped me become a better writer.
Most importantly, I focused on writing characters before spectacle. I have lived in this world for a decade now. I made the world, and when I started to write this, I let the characters act as they naturally would in this space. Readers may come for the science fiction, but they’ll stay if they care about the people living through it.
Finally, I try to live by a simple philosophy that appears throughout my work: Full Heart. Full Mind. Full Belly. To me, that means caring for yourself, never stopping your curiosity, and making sure everyone’s needs are met. It represents the keys to a good life.
Any message for our readers
Thank you for taking a chance on a new author.
I hope DUMB 31 gives you exciting adventures, memorable characters, and moments that stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page. More than anything, I hope it reminds you that even in the darkest circumstances, kindness, courage, and community are worth fighting for.
And if you’ve ever had a story inside you that you thought was impossible to tell, don’t wait. Tell it.
Thank you so much, Nik Nanoski, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
