Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.  

My name is Simon Hughes. I am a writer from North Wales, and I write warm, emotional, character-led fiction with a strong sense of place. My stories often explore love, memory, belonging, second chances, and the quiet turning points that shape people’s lives. I am especially drawn to atmospheric settings, old buildings, bookshops, cafés, small communities, and the emotional pull of returning home. My novel, Stories for Rainy Days, is a contemporary romance set in the fictional Welsh town of Celyn Falls. It is a warm, reflective, and emotional story about love, loss, healing, and finding hope after difficult times.

I have loved writing for as long as I can remember. Stories have always been a way for me to understand people, places, emotions, and the moments that stay with us long after they happen. Over the years, I have written in different forms and explored many creative projects, but fiction has always remained at the heart of what I want to do.  

Stories for Rainy Days started from a seed when I was studying for my Creative Writing MA. It stemmed from my love of atmospheric, emotional storytelling. I wanted to write a novel that felt comforting but meaningful — the kind of book readers could curl up with on a rainy day, but also one that carried real emotional depth. The setting of Celyn Falls is fictional but inspired by the Welsh town where I was born, grew up, left for 25 years, and then returned to during Covid. I love places with rivers, old streets, independent shops, community spirit, and a sense that every building has a story.  

The journey of writing this book has been about creating a world readers can step into, but also about telling a story that feels honest. It is about people carrying the past, learning to heal, and finding the courage to open themselves up to love and hope again.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?  

The biggest strategy has been consistency. Writing a novel takes time, patience, and discipline. I have learned that you cannot wait for perfect inspiration; you have to keep showing up, keep writing, and keep improving the work even when it feels difficult.  

Another important strategy has been writing from the heart while still thinking about the reader. I want my books to feel emotionally honest, but I also want them to give readers a satisfying experience. That means focusing on character, atmosphere, pacing, setting, and the emotional journey.  

I believe in building strong fictional worlds. For Stories for Rainy Days, the town of Celyn Falls is not just a backdrop. It is part of the story. Creating a strong sense of place helps readers feel as though they are living inside the novel, not just reading it.  

Finally, I have learned to keep going. Every creative journey has doubts, setbacks, and moments when you question yourself. The important thing is to continue, keep learning, and believe that the story you are writing matters.
