A Comforting Journey Through Love, Loss, and New Beginnings
There are some novels that feel less like stories and more like places readers can step into for a while. Stories for Rainy Days: A Celyn Falls Bookshop Romance by Simon Hughes carries that rare charm from its very first pages. Filled with quiet emotion, heartfelt relationships, and the comforting atmosphere of a small Welsh town, the novel offers readers a gentle escape into a world shaped by books, rain, memory, and hope.
Set in the fictional town of Celyn Falls, this contemporary romance blends warmth and emotional depth in a way that feels soothing and sincere. It is the kind of story readers may want to savour slowly with a cup of coffee while rain taps softly against the window.
A Bookshop Filled with Memories and Possibility
The story begins with Clara Wren arriving in Celyn Falls after inheriting her late great-aunt Eleanor’s bookshop. Clara has a practical plan in mind. She intends to organise the paperwork, evaluate the struggling business, sell the property, and return to her familiar life as quickly as possible.
Yet Wren Books refuses to become just another building for sale.
The old shop carries a personality of its own. Between the leaking roof, untidy accounts, and loyal reading club, Clara quickly realises the bookshop remains deeply woven into the town’s heart. The situation becomes even more complicated thanks to Pickle, the sharp-eyed cat who seems permanently unimpressed by everyone around him.
Simon Hughes creates a setting that feels wonderfully alive. The narrow streets, nearby cafés, river views, and rainy afternoons give Celyn Falls a strong emotional atmosphere throughout the novel. Readers can almost smell old paperbacks and fresh coffee drifting through the shop as Clara slowly reconnects with both the space and herself.
The story also highlights the importance of community. Eleanor’s memory still lingers in the town, and the people around Clara genuinely care about preserving the warmth she created. Their involvement adds humour, comfort, and emotional richness to the narrative.
Romance That Feels Honest and Tender
At the centre of the novel lies a beautifully understated romance between Clara and Tom Ellis, the carpenter next door. Tom is calm, dependable, and quietly thoughtful. His steady presence becomes increasingly meaningful as Clara struggles with uncertainty about her future.
Rather than relying on dramatic misunderstandings or fast-moving passion, the relationship develops naturally through everyday moments. Shared conversations, repairs around the shop, and simple acts of kindness slowly build trust between them. That slow-burn quality gives the romance emotional authenticity and makes their connection feel deeply believable.
The novel explores much more than romance alone. Themes of grief, regret, healing, and second chances run gently through every chapter. Clara carries emotional weight from the past, and much of her journey involves learning whether she is capable of building a different kind of future than the one she originally planned.
Simon Hughes handles these emotions with subtlety and care. The story never becomes overly heavy, yet it still delivers moments that feel genuinely moving. Readers who enjoy emotional contemporary romance with strong character depth will likely appreciate the thoughtful balance between tenderness and hope.
The tone throughout remains soft, reflective, and uplifting. It is a comforting novel without losing emotional honesty, which gives the story lasting impact.

We had the privilege of interviewing Simon Hughes. Here are excerpts from the author interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Simon Hughes. I am a writer from North Wales, and I write warm, emotional, character-led fiction with a strong sense of place. My stories often explore love, memory, belonging, second chances, and the quiet turning points that shape people’s lives. I am especially drawn to atmospheric settings, old buildings, bookshops, cafés, small communities, and the emotional pull of returning home. My novel, Stories for Rainy Days, is a contemporary romance set in the fictional Welsh town of Celyn Falls. It is a warm, reflective, and emotional story about love, loss, healing, and finding hope after difficult times.
Please share your story with our readers.
I have loved writing for as long as I can remember. Stories have always been a way for me to understand people, places, emotions, and the moments that stay with us long after they happen. Over the years, I have written in different forms and explored many creative projects, but fiction has always remained at the heart of what I want to do.
Stories for Rainy Days started from a seed when I was studying for my Creative Writing MA. It stemmed from my love of atmospheric, emotional storytelling. I wanted to write a novel that felt comforting but meaningful — the kind of book readers could curl up with on a rainy day, but also one that carried real emotional depth. The setting of Celyn Falls is fictional but inspired by the Welsh town where I was born, grew up, left for 25 years, and then returned to during Covid. I love places with rivers, old streets, independent shops, community spirit, and a sense that every building has a story.
The journey of writing this book has been about creating a world readers can step into, but also about telling a story that feels honest. It is about people carrying the past, learning to heal, and finding the courage to open themselves up to love and hope again.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy has been consistency. Writing a novel takes time, patience, and discipline. I have learned that you cannot wait for perfect inspiration; you have to keep showing up, keep writing, and keep improving the work even when it feels difficult.
Another important strategy has been writing from the heart while still thinking about the reader. I want my books to feel emotionally honest, but I also want them to give readers a satisfying experience. That means focusing on character, atmosphere, pacing, setting, and the emotional journey.
I believe in building strong fictional worlds. For Stories for Rainy Days, the town of Celyn Falls is not just a backdrop. It is part of the story. Creating a strong sense of place helps readers feel as though they are living inside the novel, not just reading it.
Finally, I have learned to keep going. Every creative journey has doubts, setbacks, and moments when you question yourself. The important thing is to continue, keep learning, and believe that the story you are writing matters.
Any message for our readers?
My message to readers is simple: I hope Stories for Rainy Days gives you warmth, comfort, and hope.
This is a novel for anyone who enjoys emotional romance, second chances, atmospheric settings, and stories about love, healing, and belonging. It is a book for readers who understand that life is not always perfect, that people carry pain quietly, and that sometimes the smallest moments can change everything.
I hope readers fall in love with Celyn Falls, with its rain-soaked streets, cosy corners, old memories, and sense of community. Most of all, I hope the story reminds readers that even after loss, heartbreak, or regret, there is still room for hope, connection, and new beginnings.
Thank you so much, Simon, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
