Stories drawn from ancient history can feel surprisingly fresh when placed in the hands of a writer with a fearless imagination. In Raising Cain, Brian Artz transforms the biblical figure of Cain into a tormented supernatural warrior whose latest mission may decide the fate of humanity.
Published independently and available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats, the novel brings together vampires, religious authority, dark fantasy, action, and apocalyptic prophecy.
A New Life for an Ancient Legend
Cain’s story began with the death of his brother Abel, though his suffering continued for centuries afterward. He has wandered through history and hell, carrying the consequences of his actions wherever he goes. Time has given him experience and strength, yet it has also deepened the wounds that define him.
The Vatican eventually gained control over Cain and turned him into a weapon. His extraordinary abilities made him valuable, while his troubled past left him vulnerable to restraint and manipulation. This relationship adds an unsettling dimension to the story. An institution associated with spiritual guidance now commands one of history’s most condemned figures for its own purposes.
Cain’s circumstances change when he rescues a woman and a child from a vampire camp. Their survival becomes personally important to him, drawing out protective instincts that centuries of torment have failed to erase. The rescue also places him directly in the path of a much larger threat.
An approaching apocalypse soon raises the stakes. Cain must use everything he has learned through generations of pain, conflict, and punishment to prevent the end of days. The mission forces him to face his darkest memories while deciding how much destruction he’ll unleash to protect those who have become close to him.
A Supernatural Crisis Rooted in Wisconsin
Brian gives Raising Cain a broad supernatural scope while grounding key parts of the story in Wisconsin. Wausau and areas throughout Wisconsin’s Northwoods provide a recognizable setting for encounters involving vampires, ancient forces, and religious prophecy.
This regional presence helps the novel establish its own character. Forests, communities, and familiar locations gain a darker energy as they become part of Cain’s dangerous mission. Readers from Wisconsin may recognize places they know, while those from elsewhere can experience a distinct setting that feels far removed from the usual locations found in apocalyptic fiction.
The story’s combination of horror, dark humor, action, and fantasy creates room for several kinds of tension. Physical danger arrives through battles and supernatural enemies. Emotional pressure comes from Cain’s memories, his connection to the rescued pair, and the painful history he can never fully leave behind.
Reader Amber Gollon awarded the book five stars and praised its emotional depth, intense battles, unexpected developments, and use of real Wisconsin locations. Her response also highlighted Cain as a complex and relatable protagonist whose ancient suffering strengthens the story.
Casey Braun described the novel as amazing and intense, adding that it keeps readers alert and eager to continue. The enthusiastic review recommends the book to people who enjoy supernatural fiction and fast-moving suspense.
Meet Brian Artz
Brian Artz is a Wisconsin-raised writer who has been interested in music, visual art, and storytelling throughout his life. Raising Cain is his first independently released novel and introduces the creative direction he plans to follow in future projects.
His upcoming work will continue exploring horror, supernatural horror, and dark fantasy. These genres reflect the books and stories he enjoys, including thrillers, fantasy adventures, and action-driven fiction.
Brian is 40 years old, a father of three, a fiancé, a full-time worker, and an author whenever he can make time to write. His fiancée is his muse, and he credits his family, friends, and music with giving his imagination energy.
For over two decades, ideas accumulated while he faced the effects of ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Those struggles made it difficult for him to pursue his creative ambitions. Reaching a more balanced point allowed him to begin developing those concepts and finally share them with readers.
Brian considers every book an extension of himself. That personal approach gives his fiction an unfiltered quality shaped by his interests, experiences, emotions, and long-standing fascination with darkness.

Where Ancient Pain Meets Modern Horror
Raising Cain presents a familiar name through an imaginative supernatural lens. Its central character carries centuries of guilt into a battle involving vampires, the Vatican, kidnapped innocents, and the possible destruction of the world.
For readers who enjoy morally complicated heroes, local atmosphere, fierce action, and religious mythology woven into dark fantasy, Brian’s debut offers an absorbing new adventure. It also marks the arrival of a Wisconsin author who is ready to turn more than 20 years of ideas into vivid, intensely personal fiction.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
