How much courage does it take to challenge a kingdom built on fear? In her debut fantasy novel, ‘Darkness and Light,’ Theo Jaeger invites readers into a world where survival demands intelligence, loyalty is difficult to earn, and one young woman’s destiny could transform countless lives.

Behind the Walls of Fellitair’s Royal Fortress
Imagine waking up somewhere unfamiliar, discovering that freedom has disappeared and every decision belongs to someone else. This terrifying experience marks the beginning of Soul’s journey in ‘Darkness and Light,’ published by ZuFaeSki Books. Sold into slavery, she finds herself in Fellitair, a country where the powerful Immortals enjoy privileges denied to ordinary humans. Above everyone stands the Blood Queen, whose merciless rule has created an atmosphere of constant fear. Readers can pick up this debut, which arrived on Kindle on October 31, 2026, in Kindle, Paperback and Hardcover editions on Amazon.
The Queen’s hatred extends particularly toward half-bloods, individuals descended from both humans and Immortals. Those discovered face execution or an even more disturbing punishment involving transformation into Harrows. These unfortunate victims lose their ability to make independent decisions, becoming empty vessels controlled by others. Through this frightening system, Theo establishes a society where ancestry determines opportunity, safety, and sometimes the right to remain alive.
Soul’s circumstances become increasingly complicated when she enters the royal fortress as an attendant. Her new position places her close to the very people responsible for Fellitair’s suffering. She must learn unfamiliar customs, understand dangerous personalities, and carefully manage her behavior to avoid attracting unwanted attention. The fortress becomes an intriguing setting where whispered conversations and concealed motives create an atmosphere of uncertainty.
An Unlikely Connection Changes Everything
The story takes an especially fascinating direction when Soul becomes the personal attendant of the Queen’s brother. Known for his deadly abilities and unpredictable temperament, the Prince serves as the kingdom’s feared assassin. His previous servant died at his hands, making Soul’s appointment particularly alarming to those familiar with his reputation. Fellow attendants expect another tragedy, leaving her to face an intimidating situation with limited guidance.
Soul possesses an instinct for survival that helps her endure circumstances others consider impossible. Her ability to observe people and respond thoughtfully allows her to remain alive longer than expected. Gradually, she begins discovering that the individuals surrounding her possess complicated histories and concealed identities. These discoveries introduce unexpected relationships and encourage readers to question the intentions of characters who initially appear straightforward.
As Soul becomes more familiar with the fortress, her personal struggle develops into something much larger. She discovers individuals secretly working against the Queen’s authority and learns about the suffering taking place beyond the palace walls. These encounters provide opportunities for meaningful alliances while revealing the risks associated with helping those considered enemies of the kingdom.
One of the novel’s most intriguing elements concerns Soul’s origins. She already knew she was a Fated, someone originating from Haven, a place many inhabitants of Fellitair believe exists only in legends. Soul’s arrival in Fellitair carries extraordinary significance, suggesting that she possesses the potential to influence its future. The prophecy surrounding her also raises frightening questions about the destruction her actions might unintentionally cause.
Her path eventually intersects with the Shadows, a courageous underground organization dedicated to protecting persecuted half-bloods. These resistance members secretly transport refugees into Tisia, a neighboring country offering an opportunity to escape the Queen’s reach. Their dangerous activities highlight the compassion and determination surviving beneath Fellitair’s oppressive political system. For Soul, their mission offers a meaningful purpose beyond her immediate struggle for survival.
The stakes rise dramatically when Soul earns the Blood Queen’s anger and receives a sentence to the pits. Within these brutal fighting grounds, prisoners must battle for their lives while confronting seemingly impossible odds. Soul surprises her enemies by becoming a respected leader among those imprisoned. With support from the Shadows, she begins organizing efforts to secure freedom and challenge the forces controlling their lives.
Her growing influence creates an engaging examination of leadership under extreme pressure. Every victory introduces additional responsibilities, particularly because the prophecy surrounding her remains uncertain. Soul must consider how her decisions affect the vulnerable people who have placed their hopes in her abilities. The possibility of saving an entire population makes her journey emotionally compelling.

Thank you so much for joining us today! Could you please introduce yourself and tell us what you do?
I’m Theo Jaeger and I work with dogs. I do dog grooming and boarding.
Could you tell us the story or journey behind your work?
I’ve always enjoyed reading, especially fantasy. I was always a quiet kid and didn’t have much for friends. Reading was an escape from this world. Who wouldn’t want to visit other worlds? I’m sure some people won’t understand it, though there are those who will, but books are friends. They’re full of people who will never leave and will always stay the same as the first time you met them. I realized I could create that. I could make those worlds for people to escape to. That’s why I write.
What strategies or principles have helped you?
Unfortunately for me, I don’t have any strategies. My brain never shuts off and rarely ever stays focused on something for long. Before I’ve finished one story, my brain is already writing others. I’m too busy fighting to keep my brain focused to actually have any sort of strategy. I just go for things and hope for the best.
What is your message for readers?
If you’re looking for a different world to escape to for a bit, give my book Darkness and Light a chance.
Thank you so much, Theo, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
