Why Adesola Adejuwon’s ‘Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister’ Belongs in Every Growing Family’s Library

Family life can change in an instant when a new baby is announced. For a young child, that exciting news may bring curiosity, happiness, worry, and countless questions about what life will look like next. Adesola Adejuwon’s Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister: From Me to We: A New Role, a Bigger Heart explores this experience.

When a Birthday Wish Comes True

Readers meet an energetic little girl, Skylar, who holds a special place in her family. Skylar is an only child as well as the youngest of sixteen grandchildren. Surrounded by loving parents and attentive relatives, she has grown comfortable being the center of everyone’s affection. Then, after wishing for a sibling on her birthday, she receives news that promises to transform her familiar world.

The announcement arrives during Thanksgiving, a holiday already filled with gratitude, family, and shared memories. This year, Skylar’s family has an additional reason to celebrate because a new baby is coming. Skylar learns that she has earned the biggest promotion of her young life: the role of big sister. The title sounds exciting and important, giving her a reason to imagine the adventures she may soon share with the newest member of the family.

As the initial excitement settles, Skylar begins to recognize that her promotion comes with changes. A baby may affect routines, divide attention, and introduce responsibilities that she has never experienced before. These possibilities create a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty. By allowing Skylar to move naturally through these emotions, the story reflects what many children experience when their family prepares to welcome another child.

Big Feelings in a Growing Home

Young children often need support when expressing complicated emotions, especially during major transitions. They may feel thrilled about becoming an older sibling while quietly worrying about their own place in the family. Skylar’s experience helps bring those hidden concerns into the open. Her journey shows that excitement, nervousness, curiosity, and hope can exist together, making each response worthy of patience and understanding.

The book’s “From Me to We” theme captures an important stage in Skylar’s development. She begins learning that family life involves sharing attention, making room for another person, and forming new bonds. Her identity continues to matter as she steps into a role that asks her to grow. Through everyday family experiences, she discovers that welcoming a sibling can expand her world and give her new ways to express love.

Misha Malik’s illustrations add warmth and accessibility to this emotional journey. The visual storytelling can help younger readers follow Skylar’s reactions and identify feelings that may be difficult to describe with words. For preschool and early elementary audiences, expressive pictures also make shared reading more engaging.

Parents and caregivers may find the book especially useful before a new baby arrives. Reading it together can create a relaxed opportunity to answer questions about changing routines, shared spaces, and parental attention. Grandparents, educators, and librarians can also use Skylar’s story to encourage discussions about adaptability and sibling relationships. Since the narrative is inspired by real-life events, its emotional moments carry a familiar quality that many growing families will recognize.

The story also presents siblinghood as an ongoing experience rather than a single announcement. Skylar must learn what the role means while continuing to understand her own needs. This gradual process gives the story sincerity, showing young readers that adjusting to change can take time and that supportive family conversations can make the journey feel safer.

We had the pleasure of connecting with children’s book author Adesola Adejuwon, who shared insights into her writing journey, creative inspiration, and the story behind her book, Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister. Here is what she had to say.

Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Adesola Adejuwon. I’m a pharmacist, children’s book author, wife, mother, and creative entrepreneur passionate about storytelling, personal growth, and making a meaningful impact. Although my professional background is rooted in healthcare and science, I’ve always embraced creativity and the power of storytelling to inspire and connect people. I’m the author of Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister, a heartwarming children’s picture book celebrating family bonds, emotional growth, and the journey of welcoming a new sibling. I’m also the founder of SolazIndelibles, a creative platform dedicated to meaningful stories, ideas, and experiences that leave lasting impressions.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey into children’s literature began with a meaningful family experience: preparing my daughter for the arrival of a new sibling. While welcoming a baby is exciting, it’s also a significant transition for the child becoming an older sibling. I wanted to create a story that captures the joy of that milestone while acknowledging the emotions and adjustments that come with it. That inspiration became Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister: From Me to We: A New Role, A Bigger Heart. What began as a personal story evolved into a two-year publishing journey filled with learning, revisions, creative decisions, and unexpected challenges. Balancing my professional career, family responsibilities, and the publishing process required patience, resilience, and determination. Seeing the finished book come to life was incredibly rewarding. Even more fulfilling is knowing that a personal experience can now help families start meaningful conversations about sibling relationships, kindness, and emotional growth. And this is only the beginning of my storytelling journey!

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

My journey has taught me that success is often built through persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning. I stayed focused on creating a quality book, even when the process required more time and effort than anticipated. I learned to ask questions, seek professional guidance, embrace constructive feedback, and make thoughtful decisions rather than rushing the process. Balancing multiple responsibilities also taught me the importance of discipline, prioritization, and celebrating small milestones. Above all, faith, perseverance, and the encouragement of loved ones helped me stay grounded throughout the journey. For me, success isn’t simply about reaching a milestone. It’s about growing through the experience and creating something that can positively impact others.

Any message for our readers.

Every meaningful journey begins with the courage to take that first step. Whether you’re pursuing a creative dream, exploring a new opportunity, or navigating a season of change, believe in your ability to grow beyond what feels familiar. Be patient with yourself, remain curious, and celebrate progress along the way. To parents and caregivers, I’d also encourage us to remember that children experience big emotions, even when they don’t always have the words to express them. A little patience, reassurance, and intentional connection can make a lasting difference. Through Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister, I hope to remind families that change can bring challenges, but it can also open the door to deeper understanding, stronger bonds, and beautiful new beginnings. Keep learning, keep growing, and never underestimate the impact of your story.

Thank you so much, Adesola, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
