Elisha J. Nelson’s With Love, From CJ Opens Hearts and Minds to Autism Inclusion

With Love, From CJ: Introducing a Wholesome Tale of Autism Awareness

Stories have a unique way of opening minds and encouraging empathy, especially among young readers. One children’s book that does this beautifully is With Love, From CJ by Elisha J. Nelson. This bright and heartfelt tale follows the journey of a child with autism, helping children understand the value of kindness while also inviting adults to discuss the importance of embracing differences. Written with warmth and care, Elisha’s narrative shows that every child, regardless of ability, deserves to feel included.

The book centers on CJ, a boy who experiences the world in his own distinct way. Through simple words and friendly illustrations, With Love, From CJ highlights his day-to-day adventures, the unique ways he interacts with his surroundings, and the struggles he sometimes faces. Children who read CJ’s story may notice similarities with their own lives—moments of happiness, excitement, or even frustration—and learn that these feelings can be universal, whether or not a child has a disability. By the end, readers come away with a better understanding of autism and the role compassion plays in building friendships and connections.

Walking in CJ’s Shoes

One of the most remarkable aspects of With Love, From CJ is the decision to tell the story from CJ’s perspective. This narrative choice allows young readers to experience the world through the eyes of a child with autism, focusing on his sensory experiences and the differences in his communication style. Although CJ is non-verbal, his thoughts, needs, and feelings come across vividly, showing children that everyone has a unique way of sharing what’s in their heart.

By highlighting CJ’s perspective, the book gives a gentle yet powerful lesson in empathy. Young readers start to grasp what it might feel like to be sensitive to loud noises, unfamiliar environments, or sudden changes in routine. At the same time, they also learn how rewarding simple acts of kindness can be—like offering a smile, a wave, or an invitation to play. CJ’s message is clear: understanding leads to acceptance, and acceptance leads to true friendship.

A Mother’s Devotion to Her Son

With Love From CJ 3

The author, Elisha J. Nelson, wears multiple hats in her busy life. She is a wife, a mother of a son diagnosed with autism, an insurance underwriter, and now a children’s book author. Her personal experiences with her son’s diagnosis, which was confirmed when he was just two years old, gave her the motivation to share their journey. By speaking so openly about CJ’s challenges and achievements, Elisha offers a genuine, compassionate view of the autism spectrum—one that many families will likely recognize in their own lives.

Raising a child on the autism spectrum can be both challenging and enriching. For Elisha, every breakthrough—whether it’s learning a new form of communication or thriving in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy—reinforces her belief in love, resilience, and the power of supportive communities. Her hope is that by writing With Love, From CJ, she can reach other parents and children, encouraging them to embrace differences and recognize that kids with disabilities have just as much potential for joy, learning, and friendship as anyone else.

Encouraging Compassion and Understanding

With Love From CJ 4

At its core, With Love, From CJ is a heartfelt invitation for children and adults to grow in empathy. By picking up this book and stepping into CJ’s story, families can begin an honest discussion about autism, disabilities, and the power of kindness. The author’s message is particularly timely in an era where inclusion is increasingly recognized as a vital part of healthy social development. When children encounter diverse stories early in life, they develop broader perspectives and are more likely to treat classmates with understanding and respect.

Beyond simply reading the book, parents can use CJ’s experiences as a conversation starter. Talking about moments when a child may have seen someone who behaved or communicated differently can encourage them to reflect on how to be more patient and welcoming. It might be as simple as reminding children to introduce themselves or ask thoughtful questions rather than making assumptions. These small steps can turn into lifelong habits of treating others with warmth, especially those who may face challenges that are different from their own.

In addition to lessons about autism, Elisha’s work highlights the significance of reaching out to anyone who might seem lonely or left out. A friendly gesture can make a world of difference for a child who struggles to connect. The book underscores that common ground can be found in shared laughter, creative play, or learning new ways to communicate—even if that communication doesn’t involve spoken words.

Children’s literature has long served as a window to new ideas and experiences. In With Love, From CJ, Elisha J. Nelson provides a warm, personal window into the life of a child on the autism spectrum. By championing acceptance and representation, she paves the way for more inclusive classrooms and playgrounds. Ultimately, the story stands as a reminder that compassion and understanding are the keys to building bridges between kids of all abilities. Through CJ’s eyes, readers glimpse how embracing differences—rather than shying away from them—allows a child’s unique light to shine even brighter.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Elisha Nelson. I am a wife and a mother. My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. I am an insurance underwriter and I am also a children’s book author.

Please tell us about your Book.

My book is called With Love, From CJ. The book is written from my son’s point of view. It is the story of a child with autism who wants others to understand and include him. It is important for children to learn about autism and know that it is ok to be friends with others with disabilities. Autistic children may do things differently, but it is okay to be friends with them.

Please tell us about your journey.

We learned that my son was autistic 8 years ago. He is non-verbal. While there have been challenging times, the journey is rewarding! We have learned how to communicate with our son. My son is thriving and is enrolled in ABA therapy to help him to learn to communicate.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

I don’t have a magic strategy. I am just a mother that will not give up. I am a mother who will advocate for her son so that he can live a meaningful life.

Any message for our readers

I would like readers to learn about autism and other disabilities. I would like readers to encourage their children to accept people with disabilities and treat them with kindness.

Thank you so much, Elisha, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
