Discover the Mythical Secrets in Author Patricia Elliott’s ‘The Blues of Atlantis’

In Patricia Elliott’s The Blues of Atlantis, readers are introduced to a gripping tale where fantasy and reality intertwine. This Kindle Edition book, available on Amazon, follows the life of Nerina Winters, a woman who finds herself swept up in a storm of secrets, family revelations, and betrayal. Elliott skillfully weaves a story that challenges perceptions of trust, identity, and the nature of secrets, all within a framework that draws on mythical themes.

A Hidden World Beneath the Surface

At first glance, Nerina Winters leads a life full of wonder and fantasy. As a performer, she takes on the role of a mermaid in daily aquarium shows, enchanting audiences with her underwater grace. However, as she begins to face real-life challenges, Nerina discovers that her personal reality is more fantastical than the stories she presents to her spectators. A routine doctor’s visit reveals a shocking family secret that shatters her understanding of who she is, forcing her into a journey of self-discovery and survival.

Her world begins to unravel when she learns that this secret was something she wasn’t supposed to know until her thirtieth birthday, but now it’s too late. The revelation leads to a dangerous game where trust becomes a scarce commodity, and Nerina’s once-stable life turns into a race against time. Her husband, who has his own set of secrets, quickly becomes another mystery she needs to solve. As the story unfolds, readers are drawn deeper into Nerina’s quest for truth, facing the consequences of secrets kept and promises broken.

The Danger of Hidden Truths

One of the central ideas of The Blues of Atlantis is the danger that comes with keeping secrets. Secrets, as Elliott portrays, are like ticking time bombs—they can explode without warning, leaving chaos in their wake. Throughout the novel, the tension is built upon the nature of these hidden truths. Nerina’s life is not only endangered by her family’s secret but also by the deception of those closest to her. Elliott creates a palpable sense of suspense as Nerina races to uncover the truth before it’s too late.

Nerina’s journey becomes a study in trust. She grapples with the difficulty of deciding who to believe, while her own understanding of reality starts to falter. Her husband, who once seemed like a reliable partner, becomes increasingly enigmatic. The novel raises the question: How well can you truly know someone, especially when they are hiding important parts of themselves?

The novel’s tagline, “Some swear by secrets. Some die from them,” encapsulates the dangerous power of hidden truths. The Blues of Atlantis is not just a narrative about uncovering mysteries but also an exploration of how much we’re willing to risk to protect the lies we hold dear. It asks readers to consider the consequences of deceit and whether the truth can ever truly set us free.

Myths and Mysteries Collide

At the heart of The Blues of Atlantis is the theme of myth and its relation to reality. Elliott cleverly uses Nerina’s role as a mermaid performer to mirror the deeper truths of the story. Mermaids, in mythology, are often depicted as mysterious, alluring creatures with hidden depths—a perfect metaphor for Nerina’s situation. Just as a mermaid’s true nature is concealed beneath the surface of the water, the truth about Nerina’s life is buried beneath layers of lies.

As the novel progresses, Elliott skillfully intertwines the mythical and the real. Nerina’s discovery of her family’s secret takes on an almost mythological quality, transforming her life into something far more complex than she could have imagined. The lines between fantasy and reality blur as Nerina navigates this new world of deception and danger.

Elliott also plays with the concept of mythology as a way to explore identity. Nerina’s understanding of herself is completely altered by the revelations she uncovers. Like many mythical heroes, she embarks on a journey not only of survival but also of self-discovery. The Blues of Atlantis deftly asks: What if the myths we’ve heard for centuries were not just stories but reflections of deeper truths about our own lives?

We had the privilege of interviewing Patricia Elliott. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Patricia, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I live in Beautiful British Columbia with my children and significant other. Now, that my lovely kids are all adults, I’ve decided to actively pursue my passion for the written word.

Please tell us about your book, The Blues of Atlantis.

My book, The Blues of Atlantis, follows a young woman who learns that she isn’t who she thought she was, and neither are the people around her. Secrets run rampant, and she has to determine who to trust and who not to trust. They learn that secrets can be dangerous. Some even die because of them.

Please share your journey with our readers.

When I was a youngster, I spent the majority of my time writing fanfiction and poetry to avoid the harsh reality of bullying. Writing allowed me to escape into another world, even if temporarily; a world in which I could be anyone or anything, even a mermaid.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Successful. That’s to be debated. *lol* I think the biggest thing that helped me was learning how to create a plan to reach my goals. If you create a daily list of goals and don’t stop until those are completed, you can accomplish more than you think.

Any message for our readers?

Never stop reading. It activates the imagination, which is something we really need in the world today. People are forgetting how to use it with all the technology we have out there. And, you matter to an author more than you realize…not just because you buy the book and leave reviews, but we want you to forget all your worries for just a little while and be able to escape into another dimension.

Thank you so much, Patricia, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
