From Darkness to Light: Discover Sarita Scales’ Powerful Story in ‘Surviving My Generational Curse’

In her deeply reflective book, Surviving My Generational Curse: Never Let People Define You, Sarita Scales tells a raw and moving story about overcoming a lifetime of family dysfunction and finding a path to personal redemption. As a semi-retired professional with a background in finance and real estate, Sarita shares her emotional journey of growing up in a home dominated by the shadow of her undiagnosed narcissistic mother. Her book uncovers the pain, betrayal, and emotional scars she endured, but it is ultimately a story of hope, resilience, and self-empowerment. Readers can find it on Amazon.

A Childhood of Secrets and Emotional Abuse

Sarita’s childhood was marked by deep emotional wounds caused by her mother’s behavior. On the outside, her mother presented herself as the perfect hostess—kind, warm, and charismatic. But once the visitors left and the doors were closed, Sarita and her father were met with a very different person. The transformation was stark. In private, Sarita’s mother, whom she refers to as “The Pretender,” unleashed her anger and cruelty on those closest to her, particularly Sarita and her father.

The emotional and physical abuse within the home was constant, a terrifying daily reality that Sarita was forced to navigate from an early age. She recalls the violent outbursts, often marked by bloodshed, harsh words, and prolonged confrontations that could last for hours. It was a dark world of trauma that few could imagine, and yet it was the foundation upon which her childhood was built. For years, Sarita struggled to understand why the very person who should have been her protector seemed determined to tear her down.

The most difficult part of Sarita’s story is the realization that no one ever came to her or her father’s defense. The emotional scars left by her mother’s narcissism left her feeling isolated and betrayed. This constant cycle of abuse continued throughout her life, right until her mother’s death at 97. Sarita was left to pick up the pieces, trying to make sense of a family dynamic that was driven by dysfunction rather than love.

The Struggle for Independence and Identity

One of the most profound lessons Sarita learned early on was that she had to find her own way in the world. With no support from her mother, Sarita realized that she would need to carve her own path to independence, even if it meant breaking away from the expectations placed upon her. Her journey was filled with betrayals, not only from her mother but also from others whom she thought had her best interests at heart. These betrayals shattered her trust in those around her, and as a result, she developed a defense mechanism: keep moving forward, no matter what.

Sarita describes how this survival instinct became a way of life. She learned to “pre-wire” herself to move from one betrayal to the next, adapting to each painful shift without allowing herself to be defeated. It was a process of learning how to navigate life’s hardships without internalizing the negativity that came with them. Along the way, she also learned not to beat herself up when things went wrong. Her mother’s words had told her she was worthless, but Sarita refused to let those words define her. Each step she took was a step toward reclaiming her identity, outside of the control her mother had once held over her.

Uncovering Family Secrets and Finding Redemption

In Surviving My Generational Curse, Sarita reveals many family secrets that were hidden under the surface of her mother’s perfect public persona. Through writing the book, she found the courage to confront the darker truths that had shaped her upbringing. Sarita opens up about how her mother’s behavior not only affected her but also her siblings, who suffered in silence for years.

Her mother’s narcissistic tendencies created an environment where deception and manipulation were the norm, leaving emotional scars that would take years to heal. Sarita speaks candidly about the impact this had on her relationships with those around her. Her father, a man who was often a target of her mother’s rage, seemed powerless to stop the emotional abuse. Sarita, too, felt helpless for much of her life. However, as she began to confront these painful truths, she found a path to healing.

Writing her story allowed Sarita to process her pain and find redemption in her own truth. The act of sharing her experience gave her the power to take control of her narrative, rather than letting the trauma define her. For Sarita, this process was not about seeking revenge or placing blame, but about understanding the impact of generational trauma and working to break the cycle.

A Message of Hope and Empowerment

Sarita’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Despite the many hardships she faced, she ultimately found her way to personal empowerment. In writing Surviving My Generational Curse, she not only healed herself but also offered hope to others who may be facing similar struggles. Her message is clear: no matter how difficult your circumstances, you have the power to define your own future.

The final takeaway from Sarita’s story is one of self-empowerment. Throughout the book, she emphasizes the importance of not letting others dictate your worth. Sarita’s life was marked by dysfunction, but she chose to rise above it. Her journey is one of survival, resilience, and ultimately, self-reclamation. Each step she takes now is for herself, not for the approval of others. Sarita’s story is a reminder that we are not defined by the pain we endure, but by the strength we find in overcoming it.

Surviving My Generational Curse is not just a memoir, but a guide for anyone looking to break free from the chains of their past. It is a call to embrace self-love, resilience, and the courage to define your own life. Through her words, Sarita Scales has turned her personal suffering into a powerful message of hope and empowerment for all.

We had the privilege of interviewing Sarita Scales. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi Sarita, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am semi-retired, and I have worked for years in the finance and real estate field. I have three adult children and two granddaughters.

Please tell us about your book, Surviving My Generational Curse.

The book is about my journey being raised by a mother who was an undiagnosed Narcissistic person. Who tried to control her family’s lives. In front of others, she was the perfect Host until the company left and the door closed. The Pretender (as I call her) was released, and depending on the visit, the encounters were violent with bloodshed, name-calling, and cursing, and could last for hours. It was a scary situation. However, this became our everyday life. No one came to our defense. My father and I were her main victims. I never expected my Mother would be my worst enemy. She was hell-bent on destroying my life. This lasted until she passed away at the age of 97 years old.

Please share your journey with our readers.

I had to grow up being in the survival mode all the time. The streets raised me because my parents were busy in their own lives, just fighting to care about their children. Never stopping to think about the effects this created on their children. Imagine I had to breathe, eat, and sleep in this environment. Eventually, it becomes engrained in your soul.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

It was not until I had a near-death experience in 2023 that all my suppressed memories began flowing out. While trying to recover from this traumatic event, I realized these negative thoughts were preventing me from healing. At the suggestion of my Therapist, I started writing. At first, it was rough to realize all the signs I had ignored. I blamed myself for being blinded by all of this. I knew now, years ago, I should have separated myself from this family. And knew, I was trying to run from the problem that followed me like a shadow. I was masking the issue with drugs, alcohol, and sex and that none of these had cured what was inside. I had to make a difference and rely on my own understanding and belief. I had to understand every step I took was being ordered by God. Even writing this book and telling my story needed to come out in the light. Too many families want to keep the secrets inside the family. But, they never take into account the mental damage the secrets are causing. My family ignored everything. By believing in God and knowing my Guardian Angels were protecting me, this allowed me to survive.

Any message for our readers?

Always believe in you. Let you define who you are. Trust in your instincts!

Thank you so much, Sarita, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
