Into the Fractured Kingdom of Eirene
Brendon James’ Foes of Hope opens its gates to a kingdom standing at the edge of collapse. The nation of Eirene, once proud and unshakable, now cracks under the weight of civil war. Beyond the palace walls, rebellion stirs, alliances splinter, and a shadowy force known as the Harbingers rises to challenge the crown. Within the royal household, the Arete siblings navigate a battlefield of their own—one built on family ties, old wounds, and ambitions that could either save their land or seal its fate.
Vasarea, the continent where the tale unfolds, feels steeped in an alternative Victorian charm laced with danger. It’s a place where the clink of teacups in drawing rooms can’t drown out the distant echo of marching boots. The air is thick with unrest, and Brendon James invites readers to walk alongside those trying to shape what comes next.
The Arete Siblings and Their Burdens
Every chapter pulls the curtain back on the Arete family’s struggles. Pistis, the youngest daughter, carries the heaviest decision of her life—choosing who among her family to save, and who will be left to fall. Memories of her past refuse to fade, forcing her to reckon with choices she’d rather bury.
Her brother Cadfael, the charismatic Prince, understands charm can win allies, but it can’t hold up the kingdom’s crumbling foundations forever. The decisions waiting on his shoulders could determine whether Eirene stands united or fractures beyond repair. Then there’s Yagmur, the sibling most often judged and underestimated, locked in a battle against addiction. She’s caught in a maze of trust and betrayal, where the wrong step could cost everything.
As the siblings wrestle with loyalty, ambition, and self-preservation, the war outside mirrors the one within. Every choice draws them closer to a moment where their fates—and the fate of Eirene—will be decided.
A World Rich in Shadows and Intrigue
James crafts Vasarea as more than just a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing stage for the story’s drama. The streets of Eirene hum with tension. Behind closed doors, whispered plots take shape. The Harbingers, with their secretive reach and dangerous ideals, are an ever-present threat. Their influence seeps into court politics, religious tensions, and even the private lives of the royal family.
Through richly detailed settings, readers are invited to see more than just the palaces and war councils. There’s the grit of the marketplaces, the hushed fear of ordinary citizens, and the complex dance of diplomacy across Vasarea’s territories. These details make the kingdom feel whole—beautiful and flawed, caught between old traditions and the uncertain future ahead.
Themes That Linger
Foes of Hope doesn’t shy away from exploring the deepest corners of its characters’ hearts. Pistis’ journey wrestles with identity—how a person decides the worth of their own life when sacrifice is inevitable. Yagmur’s struggle with addiction captures the raw, unglamorous fight for self-control and redemption. Cadfael’s role highlights the cost of leadership and the weight of decisions that ripple far beyond their moment.
These personal battles make the sweeping civil war feel more intimate. Readers aren’t just watching a kingdom shift—they’re watching individuals try to reconcile who they are with who they must become. The story asks a quiet, persistent question: can someone emerge from the wreckage of duty and desire with their soul intact?
Brendon James’ Path to Storytelling
By day, Brendon James teaches high school English. By night, he tends bar at a performing arts center. Somewhere between essays to grade and drink orders to fill, the spark for storytelling took root. His passion for writing grew in college, where authors like V.E. Schwab, JJ Sherwood, and Joe Abercrombie inspired him to create worlds as vivid and complex as the ones he admired.
In 2014, James began sketching the first outlines of Foes of Hope. He wanted more than an epic of battles and political scheming—he wanted readers to connect to his characters in a way that lingered after the final page. Over time, the world of Vasarea and the Arete siblings took shape, each arc layered with personal stakes and emotional weight.
James has built a debut that’s as much about the cost of survival as it is about the thrill of victory. It’s a novel that blends political intrigue, family drama, and moral choices in a way that keeps the pages turning and the mind wondering what you’d do in their place.
Where to Step In
For those ready to be swept into court politics, backroom deals, and the fragile bonds between family members under siege, Foes of Hope is waiting on Amazon and Goodreads. Brendon James delivers a story steeped in richly drawn characters, a tangible sense of place, and conflicts that feel both epic and deeply human.
In the end, the fate of Eirene hangs on more than armies or strategy—it hangs on whether four siblings can face their own truths. And in Vasarea, truth can be the sharpest weapon of all.
We had the privilege of interviewing Brendon James. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
My name’s Brendon, and I wear many hats. I am an English and Special Education teacher, all the while working as a valet and bartender. Any little time I find to write has been sporadic, to say the least.
Please tell us about your journey.
While I was in college in 2014, I began reading more and eventually came across A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, and Kings or Pawns by JJ Sherwood. Both of these stories really resonated with me, and I said, “I want to create my own world.” It took me a lot longer than I expected, 11 years to be exact, but better late than never, right? Ever since I began writing, and going through different stages of my life, my book changed a lot too, from the settings to the characters. It became a huge passion for mine, no matter how frustrating the writing and editing process was. As I changed, so did the book. It was quite a journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Just never giving up. No matter how harsh the criticism was from my beta readers, I knew it was to help make my story stronger. Remaking my latest drafts and figuring out how to connect all the branching storylines was a challenge, but the payoff was definitely worth it.
Any message for our readers?
I hope that there’s at least one character, one situation in my book, or any book for that matter, that impacts you in a positive way.
Thank you so much, Brendon, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
