In a world filled with distractions, stress, and chaos, many people are on a quest for peace, fulfillment, and deeper meaning. Awakening with Ease, a transformative book by Susmita Barua, offers a gentle yet powerful guide to help individuals—especially women leaders, mindful entrepreneurs, immigrants, and all seekers—find a simpler, more meaningful path to self-discovery and liberation. This book draws on Barua’s personal journey and the timeless wisdom of Buddhist teachings, offering readers a practical, heart-centered approach to awakening.
From Overwhelmed to Awakened: A Personal Journey of Transformation
At one point in her life, Susmita Barua was like many others—caught in the hustle and bustle of a demanding career. As a city planner, she felt drained, overwhelmed, and disconnected from her true self. But her dissatisfaction with the conventional path led her to a profound realization: true fulfillment doesn’t come from external success or material accomplishments. It comes from within.
Her journey of awakening began when she made the brave decision to leave her stressful job and embark on a path of self-discovery. Inspired by the teachings of the Buddha, Barua sought to find a life that was grounded in mindfulness, inner peace, and authentic living. It was this inner quest that led her to write Awakening with Ease, a book that offers a simple yet profound way to live a life of happiness, compassion, and wisdom.
Barua’s story resonates with anyone who has felt disconnected or stuck in a life that doesn’t bring joy or purpose. She teaches that we don’t need to change the world to find peace; we need to change our relationship with ourselves. By embracing mindful living, we can begin to free ourselves from the patterns of suffering that often dominate our lives.
Breaking Free from Old Narratives: Embracing Love, Wisdom, and Intention
One of the key aspects of Awakening with Ease is the idea of breaking free from false narratives—those societal beliefs and structures that keep us trapped in cycles of fear, power struggles, and division. Barua’s philosophy invites readers to move beyond ego-driven concepts of success and victimhood, and instead focus on living with intention, love, and wisdom.
At the core of her message is a powerful reminder: awakening is not only about personal growth—it’s about collective transformation. The choices we make, the actions we take, and the way we engage with the world all affect the greater whole. Barua encourages readers to live with the understanding that their awakening is interconnected with the well-being of all beings. This is a call to lead lives of compassion and to contribute to a world where peace and harmony are prioritized.
Barua envisions a world where people break free from the divisive narratives of sexism, racism, and injustice. She urges individuals to embrace the wisdom of the heart—understanding that true freedom comes when we let go of fear and embrace love and understanding. This shift in consciousness, according to Barua, is the foundation of creating a better, more peaceful world.
The Power of Mindfulness and Meditation in Awakening
Mindfulness and meditation play a crucial role in the path of awakening outlined in Barua’s book. Rather than relying on external sources of validation or success, Barua stresses the importance of turning inward. Through mindfulness practices, we can begin to understand the workings of our own minds—our thoughts, emotions, and habitual reactions. This self-awareness allows us to see things as they truly are, without the filter of ego or societal conditioning.
Barua’s approach to meditation is not about escaping from the world, but about engaging with it more fully. By observing our inner world with clarity and compassion, we gain the freedom to choose how we respond to external situations. This practice of self-reflection helps us to let go of the unnecessary clutter in our minds, allowing us to experience life with greater ease, joy, and fulfillment.
The act of self-inquiry is at the heart of Barua’s teaching. She encourages readers to ask themselves profound questions like “Who am I?” and “What is the nature of my mind?” These questions help individuals gain insight into their true nature and begin the process of letting go of the false identities they’ve held onto for so long. In doing so, they can cultivate emotional freedom and experience a deeper sense of peace and equanimity.
A Collective Awakening: Mindful Leadership for Social Change
Barua’s book is not just a guide for personal transformation—it is also a blueprint for collective change. She believes that the path of awakening extends beyond individual growth and can be a catalyst for positive transformation in society. By practicing mindful leadership, Barua argues that individuals can make a profound impact on their communities, organizations, and the world at large.
She introduces the concept of AWE Circles, local groups of like-minded individuals who come together to support each other on their spiritual journeys. These circles provide a space for people to practice mindfulness, share wisdom, and collaborate on projects that promote positive change. Barua believes that by fostering these types of communities, individuals can create a ripple effect of compassion, understanding, and social change.
At the heart of Barua’s vision for change is a call to action: Be the change you wish to see in the world. Whether it’s through activism, ethical business practices, or simply leading by example, Barua encourages readers to contribute to a more compassionate, just, and peaceful world.
Awaken with Ease: A Roadmap for Transformation
Awakening with Ease offers a simple but powerful roadmap for anyone looking to live a life of meaning, fulfillment, and peace. Through mindfulness, self-awareness, and compassionate action, Barua presents a pathway that leads not only to personal freedom but also to the collective well-being of all beings. Whether you are seeking a deeper connection with yourself or a way to engage more meaningfully with the world, this book offers the tools and inspiration you need to awaken with ease and live with intention.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please tell us about your Book.
This book is based on my personal journey from being a dissatisfied professional city planner and mom in an auto-pilot life to the noble search for wise, mindful living, true freedom, and happiness as a non-monastic lay-person in a world mired with deep suffering, disconnection, war, and injustice. If you deeply long for a life of inner peace, freedom, equanimity, meaning, creativity, compassionate service, and fulfillment in a world of chaos, distraction, abuse of power, and misguided attention, then this book of spiritual liberation and reclaiming the power of your own awareness and wise attention is for you. Knowledge does not come from external and secondary sources as we are educated. The primary source is knowledge of self, mind, and reality through mindful meditation. “Know thyself’ that Socrates said, is actually the ancient path of Arya or noble ones.
Please tell us about your journey.
What my 21 years of schooling and two graduate degrees did not teach me is a deep understanding of my own life, human psychology, and the development of the higher human mind through mindful meditation, which Buddha discovered 2600 years ago. Awareness is inherent within each human being, but we are not taught how to cultivate awareness and wise attention moment by moment, so we develop insight into reality, inner resilience, confidence, and agency without external validation or approval.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Mainly turning the five senses inward so mind can observe the mind and movement of consciousness. Breath is what joins the mind and body. And noticing body sensations and feelings of pleasure, pain, and dullness through sensory contact helps us see how our habitual impulses of body-mind-speech patterns or Sankharas are formed. When we rest at ease in the gap between thoughts and re-actions or in and out-breath, we can take a pause and slowly change unwholesome ignorant actions to wholesome and skillful wise action.
Thank you so much, Susmita, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
