Innovations that change the way we live often start with a simple observation, and that’s exactly how Ryan McLeod, a 43-year-old expat living in Singapore, came to create The AquaBud. Originally from the Seattle/Portland area, Ryan’s life has always been filled with the desire to improve things around him. His invention, AquaBud, offers a groundbreaking solution to a common problem—staying hydrated effortlessly while lying in bed. Designed for pregnant women, sick relatives, kids, and anyone who struggles to reach for a water bottle, AquaBud is changing how we hydrate, all while promoting sustainability and reducing plastic waste.
The Inspiration Behind AquaBud
Ryan’s journey to inventing AquaBud started with a very personal experience during his college days at the University of Washington. Like many students, Ryan faced a few bouts of illness while attending university, and it was during one of these times that the problem of hydration struck him. He recalls how difficult it was to crane his neck and fumble with a water bottle on his nightstand while he was sick in bed. The task of drinking water while lying down felt more difficult than it should have been. This realization sparked the question in his mind: Isn’t there an easier way to drink water when you’re bedridden?
Fast forward a few years, when Ryan’s wife gave birth to their son at the Hospital in Singapore. During her hospital stay, Ryan noticed that the hospital provided her with simple plastic cups for hydration. She had a hard time reaching for the water while lying in bed, which reminded him of his experience in college. At that moment, he realized the problem extended beyond his own life—it affected many others, especially those who couldn’t easily sit up or move. This was the moment that Ryan knew he had to turn his idea into a practical solution. With a deep-rooted passion for sustainability and innovation, Ryan set out to create AquaBud.
AquaBud: The Ultimate Hydration Solution
The concept of AquaBud is simple yet revolutionary. It allows users to drink water while lying down, eliminating the need to sit up, reach over, or even get out of bed. Whether someone is pregnant, recovering from surgery, or simply too tired to move, AquaBud makes hydration effortless.
Imagine being sick in bed, or a pregnant woman struggling to get up, and having a product that delivers water right into your mouth with no effort. AquaBud provides the freedom to hydrate in a fixed position without the discomfort of leaning over or spilling water.
It’s the perfect solution for many common hydration challenges:
- Pregnant Women: As pregnancy progresses, it becomes more challenging for women to sit up or reach for water. AquaBud allows expectant mothers to stay hydrated before, during, and after childbirth without effort.
- Illness or Injury: Whether recovering from surgery or confined to bed due to illness, AquaBud offers a way for bedridden individuals to hydrate themselves without assistance.
- Nighttime Hydration: Many people dislike the inconvenience of getting out of bed in the middle of the night just to get a drink of water. AquaBud solves that by providing a handy solution at their bedside.
- Children: Keeping children hydrated can be a struggle, especially when they’re in bed. AquaBud makes it fun and easy for kids to drink water without leaving their cozy spot.
The AquaBud works by attaching to a bottle, allowing the user to drink from a flexible straw while remaining horizontal. This feature not only makes the product highly practical but also prevents spills, keeping nightstands dry and clean.
MiniBud: A Solution Tailored for Children
In addition to the main AquaBud product, Ryan has also developed the MiniBud, a smaller version specifically designed for children. Staying hydrated can sometimes be a chore for kids, but MiniBud turns drinking water into a fun, effortless task. This child-friendly version is perfect for sick children who need hydration while lying down, and parents love it because it significantly reduces spillage.
The MiniBud fits most PET bottles, Tetra Paks, and 25mm bottle spouts, making it a versatile and easy-to-use tool. Made with food-grade silicone and featuring a flexible straw, MiniBud ensures that children stay hydrated without the mess. The MiniBud is especially useful for children who struggle with standard water bottles or for parents who want a more sustainable, reusable option for their little ones.
A Focus on Sustainability
Being from the environmentally-conscious Pacific Northwest, Ryan McLeod has always cared about reducing waste and promoting sustainability. That’s why AquaBud was designed with eco-friendliness in mind. By encouraging the use of reusable bottles and offering a sustainable solution for hydration, AquaBud is helping reduce plastic waste.
Traditional hospital setups often rely on single-use plastic cups, which contribute to a significant amount of waste. With AquaBud, users can attach the product to a reusable water bottle, cutting down on unnecessary plastic. Ryan’s dedication to creating a green product not only improves convenience but also helps protect the environment. It’s a win-win for people and the planet alike.
AquaBud’s Impact: A Life-Changing Innovation
What started as a personal inconvenience for Ryan McLeod during his college days has now transformed into a life-changing product that addresses a global need. AquaBud is improving hydration for people of all ages and backgrounds, from pregnant women and bedridden individuals to kids and college students. Whether it’s helping someone avoid dehydration during illness or offering a fun, easy way for kids to drink water, AquaBud is proving to be more than just a gadget—it’s a tool that’s changing lives.
For those looking for an effortless, eco-friendly hydration solution, AquaBud and MiniBud provide the perfect answer. To learn more about the product or to purchase one for yourself or a loved one, visit theaquabud.com or follow on Instagram @theaquabud_byryanmcleod.
We had the privilege of interviewing Ryan McLeod. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Ryan, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hi, I am a 43 years old male expat living in Singapore with my wife and five year old son. I am originally from Seattle/Portland. I have invented The AquaBud product that helps people drink water effortlessly in a fixed position (i.e., in bed) in seconds effortlessly without having to get up or lean over.
What was the inspiration behind your product, The AquaBud?
When sick in bed in college at the University of Washington, I was dehydrated, and it took more work to crink my neck on my nightstand to drink water, and thought there must be an easier way. Then when my wife had our son, I couldn’t believe the Hospital in Singapore was still using crappy generic plastic water cups for hydration on the bedstand, which she couldn’t reach at all. I have pictures of her in the bed using the first demo version of The AquaBud. Being a green-oriented, recycling-loving Pacific Northwesterner, I am also very enthusiastic about how AquaBud can help reduce plastic waste.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I failed many times with molds trying to get the food-grade silicone wrap I invented to go on most 25mm sized water bottles, but finally got a working prototype. I didn’t give up, and now I find people using AquaBud in so many ways besides in bed, like school bus drivers, people at the pool who want to keep their boozy drink cold under their pool/book reading chair, in the car for kids (The MiniBud) when they can’t get a water bottle cap back on, etc.
