We had the privilege of interviewing the accomplished author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.

I am Nuno Formiga, a chemical engineer and a senior innovation leader in a leading chemical company, where I manage a multidisciplinary R&D team. I am from Portugal, born in Nazaré, which is famous for having the world’s biggest wave (you should look it up), and I have been living in Belgium with my family since 2016.

My job is to guide the team toward innovative solutions that will improve the sustainability of our products, processes, and services. This involves creating more sustainable production methods, building partnerships, securing research funding, and designing innovation strategies for the future.

Of course, managing the team here is the main point (laughs). In innovation leadership, at least how I experience it and understand it, there are only a few leadership styles that work, all of them transformative. It is very important to create a work environment where innovation can flourish. This means a constant effort to maintain the innovative culture, to provide a psychologically safe space for our people, to regularly acknowledge their work, and to ensure that failures are not penalized but used as learning opportunities.

Going back to sustainability, when I look at my 18 years career, sustainability has always been part of my path, not only in my current role, but also in all other positions I had, working more closely with our plants.

I strongly believe that in today’s world, business (and, therefore, innovation) cannot be unsustainable. It is simply not possible.

Please tell us about your book.

In my country, there is a popular saying that to achieve full satisfaction, one should do three things in their lives: plant a tree, have a child and write a book. I had already done the first two, so I only needed the third. And the circumstances were favorable.

Besides my work at Solvay, I started to share some insights on LinkedIn more than a year ago. The reason is that I love learning, and I read a lot and learn fast. I constantly try to improve my skills. As one of my mentors would say, if you can be 1% better each day, you will be 27 times better by the end of a year (it makes you think, right?).

The reality was that all those posts, which I later turned into carousels and, more recently, into weekly newsletter articles (my newsletter is called Innovative Impulse, you should check it out), had a strong basis in what I learned, either recently or throughout my career. Both my parents are teachers, and I have always heard them say that the best way to learn is to teach. By writing, I was not only creating value for my community, but also reinforcing my knowledge. It is a pure win-win, with the benefit of having the opportunity to interact with amazing people, and even creating business opportunities through the networking it involves.

Of course, having all this material, writing the book was the logical next step.

The book itself is intended to be a practical guide for innovation leaders. It guides the readers through the process of innovation, providing frameworks that, of course, cannot ensure innovation success, nor the next big breakthrough but, for sure, provide the tools to increase the likelihood that such a thing happens. To give you some examples, I discuss in the very beginning what is the difference between an invention and an innovation (do you know the difference? – chuckles), going through how to establish a culture of innovation, how to manage innovation projects (from the point that there is an idea, to the point where there is an introduction into the market), how to protect the ideas or even how to create your own, new business space, applying the Blue Ocean framework.

I tried to make it as engaging as possible, providing case-studies throughout the entire book.

All in all, while it is certainly not perfect, it is something I am quite proud of.

Please tell us about your journey.

I started my professional path in the chemical industry in 2005 at APEQ (now APQuimica), the Portuguese division of Cefic (the European Chemical Industry Council), where I worked on Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability under the Responsible Care initiative. This early opportunity gave me the chance to meet and collaborate with many amazing people from the Portuguese and European chemical industry and established the foundation for my lifelong dedication to sustainable practices in the chemical sector.

When I joined Solvay in 2007, I moved through various roles in both Portugal and Belgium, gaining valuable experience with a mix of operational and strategic leadership tasks. In Portugal, I managed a lab and supervised the production of essential chemical products, as well as participated in the planning, commissioning, decommissioning, demolition, and adaptation of chemical plants. These tasks gave me a thorough knowledge of the lifecycle of chemical manufacturing facilities, from their creation to their transformation or closure (yes, business discontinuation is also business).

It is undeniable that moving to Belgium marked an important shift in my career, where I widened my scope to a global level. In this role, I was in charge of the technical coordination of eighteen chemical plants worldwide. This position involved frequent travel and the building of solid, trust-based relationships across different cultures and regions, further improving my skills in global team management and cross-cultural communication.

Finally, as I already said, in my current role as an Innovation Leader, I am at the cutting edge of driving sustainable innovations in chemical processes. Leading a team of chemists and engineers, my focus is on creating more sustainable production methods, fostering partnerships, securing funding for research, and strategically defining our roadmap for the future.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

I mentioned briefly that my leadership is based on the principles of ethical and servant leadership. I think that a leader’s main role is to help their team, enabling each member to achieve their best. This philosophy shapes how I interact and make decisions daily.

To create a positive and healthy workplace, which is essential for innovation to thrive, I try to make an environment where my team feels appreciated, listened to, and empowered. By paying attention to their opinions and issues, I want to cultivate a culture of collaboration and respect. This approach not only improves team morale but also stimulates creative thinking and problem-solving.

Ethical leadership is another key part of my approach. I’m dedicated to making decisions that are good for our projects and the company as well as ethical and lasting. This dedication to honesty and ethical practices is something I try to show in all aspects of my work.

I’m motivated by the goal of bringing out the best from the people I work with. I believe that by helping each team member grow and learn, we together contribute to the success of our projects and the company. This emphasis on personal and professional growth is a crucial aspect of how I lead.

In short, my leadership style is about helping my team, making ethical decisions, and being motivated by the goal of fostering each individual’s potential. This approach not only matches our company’s values but also ensures that we are working towards a shared goal of innovation and sustainability.

I really think that this has been the key to success in my journey.

Any message for our readers?

Some people believe that innovation and leadership are natural talents, but they are not. Neither is entrepreneurship. You can acquire these skills.

And they are all around! Innovation is not only for laboratories or new ventures. It is discovering new ways of creating value (which is similar to innovation).

This is something that you should know and enhance. We are very fortunate to have access to information on anything we want. The resources out there are incredible.

I echo what one of my mentors said (and I am using it here): if you improve by 1% every day, you are 27 times better in a year. Isn’t this motivating? You can improve yourself, your parenting, and your profession.
