Terry Coley is a composer and contemporary artist for whom making music started out as a refuge at a time when Terry Coley’s mom was critically ill in 2017 and 2018; it was natural life transition even with the hard work required. Writing poems and stories were longtime hobbies of this Jamaican, who also explored and was a fan of multiple art forms. This was borne of a love for how artistic creations open your mind to new and epiphanic ideas.
With four releases already (2 songs and their instrumental versions), her top three hopes are for her music to be freeing, thought-provoking, and healing. ‘Bullets,‘ her first release, sees through the eyes of a sufferer of injustice and unfairness who just wants the “chances to make it” and to be free to be their own while also asking, isn’t it easy to turn things around if we really tried? ‘Gunslinger (We Hit the road Now),‘ the newest and recent release, is a song about trusting your gut and taking the plunge when it comes to love and life.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Terry Coley. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Terry, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, I am a singer and songwriter. I aim to make music that heals the heart, opens our eyes, and breaks down the limitations of the mind.
Please tell us more about your journey.
My journey in music, I would say, started seriously between 2017 and 2018. Growing up, now and again, I would, out of the blue, think of melodies or lyrics and melodies but never thought of doing music. I grew up very introverted and, in my mind, was always creating story worlds and, for a time, was writing a lot of poetry and stories. In 2017, my mother – I was an only child to a single mother – became critically ill, and during the time of the battle with this disease until she passed away, song ideas started pouring out of me. I started acquiring training to play the guitar and in other areas of music to support the development of the songs I wish to create, and I haven’t wanted to give it up since.
Please tell us about your song, ‘Gunslinger (We Hit the Road Now).’
My recent release, ‘Gunslinger (We Hit the Road Now)‘, was first written in 2018 and was originally about a love story in which someone recently met someone they felt a strong connection to and believed this could turn into something great if they only focused on that feeling and not any doubts or fears or whatever is happening in the outside world. The song highlights this with the idea of running off with that person even if it doesn’t make sense or seems reckless.
