We had the pleasure of interviewing Terrence Chan. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Terrence, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, I am 20 years old. I was born in Hong Kong and am studying in the University of Toronto; my program is civil engineering. The time that I was interested in singing was back in March 2022. I started self-taught singing by watching Youtube singing tutorials. I found singing pretty challenging and had a hard time with that. The worst thing was hurting my throat when hitting the high pitch. The method that works for me to improve myself is to record my singing video and find out my mistakes, as well as research methods of improvement. Right now, my singing skill is still not at the professional level, and I will keep on improving myself.
Please tell us more about your journey.
My music production started in March 2023. Back in January 2023, I bought a digital piano and self-taught playing chords when listening to music. When I played piano in front of my friend, he found out that I have perfect pitch and encouraged me to try to write music. On April 14, 2023, I released my first song, “Miss You Every Day,” and on April 26, 2023, I released my second song, “Study Partners.” In the future, while trying to do well academically, I will also try to join some singing competitions to let more people know about me because I love to perform.
What inspires your music?
“Miss You Every Day” was written when I was reflecting on my relationship history. Personally, I am not good at expressing myself, so it is hard for me to attract the opposite sex. Therefore, I chose to write a song to express my negative feelings. “Study Partners” was written when I was in a better mood. The inspiration for that is that even though I have bad communication skills and it is hard to get along well with me, my friends never leave me alone. That’s why I chose to write a song for them. Before I turned 16, my classmate used to think that I was weird and I had no friends at that time; because of that, I know the importance of friendship. I really want to say thank you to those who choose to stay with me.

When you want to do something, just go for it. I didn’t expect to be a singer-songwriter back in 2022, and now I made it. Even though there is a risk of failing, there is no regret in doing it.
