Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Marc Frankel, Founder and CEO of SameTunes, a music social network. SameTunes lets you compare your music libraries, generate shared playlists, and discover new music.

Please tell us something about yourself.

I am a graduating senior at Georgia Tech with a minor in Computer Science. I handle the overall strategic vision of SameTunes, run the business operations, and act as the main point of communications between the technical side and our design/marketing sides. Being a startup CEO means I wear many hats. Sometimes I find myself coding, helping with marketing, giving design feedback, running meetings, talking to investors, and more.

Please tell us more about your journey.

I came up with this idea over 2 years ago. I believe in the connecting power that music possesses, and the music world exists in relatively discrete spheres such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and more. I wanted to create a place where music could be shared, discovered, and enjoyed freely across all the music platforms. From that seed of an idea, I created a rough prototype in February to enter a startup accelerator: Georgia Tech Create-X Startup Launch. Our initial prototype gained over 120 users in 24 hours and proved that there was interest in this product. After this past summer, I hired a team of developers, designers, and music enthusiasts to further iterate SameTunes. We finally launched our MVP in late July, and we gained over 6000 users in our first week! Currently, we are adding more features, expanding our team, and starting our first fundraising round.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

We used a variety of strategies to become successful. First and foremost was hiring a dedicated team of designers, developers, and marketers to create the best version of SameTunes. Second, we performed a variety of user feedback and discovery interviews to best understand people’s motivations behind their music listening. This allowed us to design SameTunes with the user in mind, paving our foundation of user-focused design. Our user-focused design increases our ability and likelihood for people to share SameTunes and increase its virality.
