Today, we are interviewing Nico Britsch. He recently graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of California Berkeley. He launched a website that sells cactus and succulents online called Succulent Market.
How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey.
My family has been growing cactus and succulents for over 50 years. In college, I wanted to become a lawyer. To stand out in my law school application, I decided to launch Succulent Market, an e-commerce platform that sold my family’s cactus and succulents online. Upon graduating, I realized that I enjoyed the business and working with my family so much that I wanted to pursue my Succulent Market full time.
Who are your role models?
My role models are my father and grandfather. I admire their hard work and dedication to everything they do.
What inspires you?
I am inspired to provide people with happiness by selling and delivering my family’s beautiful cactus and succulents.
Please tell us about your company.
My company Succulent Market sells cactus and succulents online. Customers can pick and choose from over 100 individual varieties of cactus and succulents for sale. On Succulent Market, you can purchase individual succulents, individual cactus, potted succulents, succulent cuttings, and buy cactus and succulents in bulk.
What’s your most memorable experience?
My most memorable experience is learning how to grow cactus from seed in flats when I was little with my grandfather.
Which social media channels work best for promoting your work? What exactly do you do on the social media channel that makes it work for you?
Instagram works best for promoting my cactus and succulents for sale. There is a large following of succulent enthusiasts on Instagram who love to follow, like, and share pictures of cactus and succulents.
Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?
It sounds obvious now, but I wish I understood better before launching Succulent Market is the importance of marketing. When I launched the Succulent Market, I was entirely focused on creating a great website with a lot of products and the ability to fulfill orders quickly. When I launched my website, I quickly learned that none of the above matters if no one can see your product. Ultimately I found this realization funny. You can have one of the greatest websites with the most variety of the best cactus and succulents online. None of it matters unless people can actually see what you have to offer.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
One strategy that has helped me become successful is perseverance. When I have a goal or fail, I am always determined to try harder until I succeed or overcome whatever obstacles present in my life.
What keeps you going when things get tough?
Determination to always try to better myself and to help others.
How can people connect with you?
It sounds silly, but people can connect with me over cactus and succulents! I sincerely enjoy the unique colors and shapes of all cactus and succulents. I know my customers enjoy this too, so ultimately I can connect with others over the beauty of plants.
