Mary Cole Watson, an Award Winning teacher and Author talks about her book Wisdom Warriors.

Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Mary Cole Watson, an award-winning teacher and author of Wisdom Warriors

Wisdom Warriors is a series of Educational short stories. African American History has been weaved into each story to educate both children and adults. The stories are great for educators and all cultures because the wisdom shared serves as an education for everyone to understand the experiences of people of color.

Please tell us something about yourself.

I identify as African. My father is from Freetown, Sierra Leone. I love teaching, being fit, children, reading, drawing, and so much more.

How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey.

My job at a charter school came to a sudden end when the school was taken over by a company outside of the district. As I awaited part-time reading teacher positions, I qualified for, I decided to write a book for children because I was missing teaching very badly. And, also because a student had planted the seed for me to write books for children.

Who are my role models?

My role models are my ancestors, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and so many more leaders and writers.

What inspires you?

Making a difference in anyone’s life, particularly children.

What’s your most memorable experience?

Jacques Evans presented me with a plaque as his favorite teacher at his wedding rehearsal dinner and honoring me at his induction into Cleveland Heights High School Hall of Fame.

Which social media channels work best for promoting your work? What exactly do you do on the social media channel that makes it work for you?

Instagram, and Facebook. I post quotes and photos on social media channels.

Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started.

The overall process of getting a book published.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

My strong belief that my stories are invaluable for African American children and all children.

What keeps you going when things get tough?

Determination. That life means meeting life’s challenges.

Any message for readers.

Children are sacred, and our most valuable resource. And that education and knowledge of culture are critical for African Americans and all people to live their best lives.
