Please tell us something about yourself.
I have had a very fortunate life due to being blessed with a wonderfully supportive circle of family and friends. I have graduated multiple times, traveled across five continents, and experienced most sports and arts in depth. I currently live in Ireland, and in addition to writing horror, I also contribute to horror journals, Irish heritage, and Bipolar support networks having been diagnosed myself.
How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey?
Horror is a lifestyle choice. My interest extends beyond a mere hobby. I write, read, draw, and photograph horror. I watch horror and collect horror. I studied film at university and have proposed an extensive non-fiction book examining horror narratives from a structuralist approach. I role play, and I even have Jason Voorhees jewelry, clothes, and a tattoo.
Who are your role models?
My biggest role model is my mum Glynis Mattick who beta reads every word and gives advice on every aspect of my writing. Mum is there for me 24/7. I even feel comfortable enough to ring her at 5am on a long shift. I’m not entirely sure that she appreciates it.
What inspires you?
The people who have inspired me through their own works include a wide range of authors and auteurs; Poe, Stoker, Rice, Masterson, Le Fanu, Raimi, Hoffman, Romero, Carpenter, Hitchcock, Craven, and Cunningham. That list is by no means limited. I watch and read horror daily.
Please tell us about your book
Ultimate Horrotica is the culmination and complete collection of the Horrotica chapbooks. Various forms of short story and poetry are used to tell dark and sometimes extremely disturbing or erotic tales. The collection spans the genre and introduces new ideas alongside old favorites. It is an ode to the genre.
What’s your most memorable experience?
In relation to writing, my most memorable experiences are those nights where I set a target and do not stop until everything is done. They are most memorable because I am quite determined and refuse to give up, resulting in 48-hour stints!!
Which social media channels work best for promoting your work? What exactly do you do on the social media channel that makes it work for you?
Facebook and Twitter are the channels that allow the greatest engagement with other horror fans. I have heard other writers say that they don’t get any engagement. It’s easy to fall into the trap of simply using these channels as a means to sell and nothing more. It’s much more fun to actually engage with those who share your interests. And once you start, engagement snowballs, and you find yourself sharing and chatting without feeling any pressure to market. I love the horror family!
What’s your greatest fear?
Jellyfish, blobbing around and stinging. I have practiced lots of sports over the years and invariably clash with the little monsters in the sea. I don’t get out, I stay away, and my heart thumps.
With regards to horror, nothing scares me. I have loved horror from childhood but have never had a nightmare.
Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?
I am happy with where I am. I have traveled a long learning journey to get to where I am now, and if I had my current knowledge, I would have missed out on both the journey and the people that I have met on the way.
