Hi, I am a Somali doctor based in the UK, currently training in Psychiatry with a strong passion for Mental Health, particularly ADHD and Autism, on the journey to becoming a psychiatrist. I’m also a new author, sharing insights to empower others. Beyond medicine, I’m a skilled barber with 5 years of experience, Self-trimming, giving family and friends a haircut. Cutting my own hair and others really helped with my mental health as I’d deeply connect with myself and deeply connect with those I give a haircut to. Sharing stories, ideas and advice. Please tell us about your journey.
Like many kids, I went through primary school, secondary school, and college right here in my hometown. But in 2013, driven by ambition and the dream to become a doctor, I took a leap of faith and moved to China for medical school.
It wasn’t what I expected. In fact, it was a difficult time — one that tested me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Eventually, I made the tough decision to leave and start over. In 2015, I enrolled in a six-year medical program in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria became a defining chapter of my life. While I gained medical knowledge and clinical experience, I was also wrestling with inner battles — severe stress, anxiety, imposter syndrome, overthinking, self-doubt, and self-sabotage. It took a toll on my mental health and impacted my relationships. But I didn’t give up. I dug deep, researching mental health strategies, studying human psychology, and slowly, during the isolation of COVID in 2020, I started to heal.
That was my turning point. By 2021, I graduated as a doctor — the first in my family’s history. It was a moment of pride, growth, and transformation. Coming back to the UK after nearly a decade abroad wasn’t easy. I felt homesick — not for London, but for Bulgaria, which had become home. It felt like the end of an era. But I knew a new one was beginning.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Today, I’m on the path to becoming a psychiatrist. I’m passionate about mental health, especially ADHD and Autism. I’m also a new author — sharing my story, lessons, and tools with others who might feel the way I once did. This journey shaped me. It made me who I am. And it’s only just beginning.
There was a time in my life when everything felt heavy. Anxiety and depression took over, and I didn’t recognize myself anymore. But one day, I picked up a pen and started journaling — pouring out my thoughts, fears, and feelings without judgment. That simple act became a turning point. I began practicing CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and slowly, I started opening up. I reached out to others who were also struggling. We talked, we shared, and we supported each other.
Alongside that, I turned back to my faith. I started reconnecting with Islam, and through that, I began to heal spiritually. I found comfort in prayer, reflection, and understanding. I started to notice and appreciate the little things — sunlight through my window, a peaceful walk, a deep breath.
For the first time in a long time, I began to enjoy my own company. That was something I used to hate. But healing changed that.
To anyone reading this who’s struggling — whether it’s anxiety, depression, or simply feeling lost — please know this: You are not alone. It’s okay to feel low. It’s okay to not have everything figured out. We’re all human, and we’re all just doing our best.
