In an era where the pursuit of wellness has become more crucial than ever, Jan Raeder, affectionately known as the Self-Care Sensei, offers a fresh perspective on what it means to truly thrive. With her latest book, Strive for M.O.R.E., Raeder draws from her extensive background in wellbeing education and martial arts to guide readers through a transformative journey aimed at enhancing their quality of life. This guide is not just a collection of personal advice but a deeply researched toolkit for anyone looking to foster a genuine sense of wellbeing in the aftermath of the global challenges posed by the 2020 pandemic.

The Essence of M.O.R.E.

The core of Raeder’s philosophy is encapsulated in the M.O.R.E. framework, which stands for Meaning, Optimism, Relationships, and Engagement. This model isn’t just theoretical but is backed by over three decades of practical experience and evidence-based research in psychology and neuroscience. Raeder’s approach goes beyond conventional self-help; it’s about understanding the eight dimensions of wellbeing and how they interact with the complexities of the human brain.

Strive for M.O.R.E. delves into how these four components can serve as pillars for a balanced and fulfilling life. Raeder emphasizes that true wellness comes not from temporary fixes but from a consistent, mindful approach to nurturing each aspect of one’s life. Through her engaging narrative, she encourages readers to seek meaning in their daily activities, cultivate an optimistic outlook, forge sustainable relationships, and actively engage in their communities and passions.

We had the privilege of interviewing the accomplished author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Thank you so much for being with us today. Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.

Hello! My name is Jan Raeder, The SelfCare Sensei. I am a well-being/wellness educator. For the last thirty-plus years, I have been working with people to improve their lives. I spent most of my professional career teaching Okinawan-Japanese karate. I returned to higher education several years ago to pursue my goal of getting both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Before the pandemic, I taught a course at a local university about the theories of well-being. Because of the pandemic, I decided to write a book based on the course in an effort to get the information out to more folks.

Please tell us about your book.

My Book, Strive for M.O.R.E., is based on the course I taught, with some added information. I wanted to allow everyone to understand some of the research that has been done regarding the underpinnings of wellness and well-being. Since these are very abstract concepts, my goal was to provide a road map for anyone looking for a positive change. Additionally, I wanted to interject some of the knowledge I have gained from my three decades of martial arts.

Please tell us about your journey.

Since I have had my share of struggles, like everyone else, I was in search of something that would help me get back to the person I was when I was very young. I was a person for whom the glass was always half full, and I began to slip into someone who was very negative and unhappy. It’s been said by many, “All research is ‘me-search.” While I was pursuing my degrees, I developed a certification course for individuals looking to become wellness coaches. I decided these concepts would be great to share with anyone who wanted to understand wellness/well-being more deeply and clearly. That led me to develop the course I taught before the pandemic.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The most important strategies I have used to be happier and more fulfilled have been consistency, grit, and self-discipline. I have applied the evidence-based activities I share in my book, which have been transformative for me. I make them a practice, daily.

Any message for our readers

Anyone can change their outlook with a little consistent effort and belief in themselves.

Thank you so much, Jan, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
