Storytelling Elevated: Little Listener’s Crate by April Sheris Brings Books to Life with Music

Rediscovering the Magic of Storytelling: Little Listener’s Crate

Picture your child curled up beside you, captivated by vibrant illustrations and enchanting tales, while gentle melodies drift around you both. This charming scene is precisely what inspired April Sheris, the visionary behind Upland Studios, to create the Little Listener’s Crate—a unique storytelling experience designed especially for children aged 4–9. With carefully selected children’s books paired with thoughtfully curated music, it transforms reading into an immersive, multisensory adventure.

Enchanting Tales, Beautifully Paired

Central to the Little Listener’s Crate are three exceptional children’s stories: “Germaine the Beetle,” “A Journey for Felix,” and “A Race to Believe In.” Each tale is thoughtfully chosen to nurture essential values like bravery, empathy, curiosity, and self-confidence. These aren’t just bedtime stories; they’re life lessons wrapped in vivid imagery and heartfelt narratives, perfect for inspiring young imaginations.

What truly sets this crate apart is the carefully matched music. Each book is accompanied by its own customized soundtrack, accessible via a QR code that opens a specially curated Spotify playlist. Picture “Germaine the Beetle” coming to life with the sounds of gentle forest ambiance or “A Journey for Felix” resonating alongside mellow piano tunes and reflective jazz melodies. These soundtracks don’t merely complement the stories—they deepen emotional connections, making every reading session an unforgettable experience.

Thoughtful Extras for Creative Exploration

The Little Listener’s Crate is about more than books and music. It’s packed with interactive and thoughtful extras designed to keep young minds engaged long after the story ends. The plush beetle toy included in the crate serves not just as a cuddly companion but also as a tangible link to Germaine’s whimsical world, inviting imaginative play and storytelling beyond the pages.

The “Color & Listen” booklet further enhances creativity. This printable coloring zine brings scenes from the books vividly to life, allowing children to express themselves artistically and visually explore their favorite moments. It’s a delightful extension of the storytelling process, promoting active participation and deepening the child’s bond with the narratives.

Another engaging feature is the “Reader’s Passport”—a unique activity card encouraging children to track their reading progress throughout the summer. By marking their passport each time they complete a book, enjoy a soundtrack, or participate in storytelling sessions with family, children celebrate their literary accomplishments. This passport becomes a cherished keepsake, chronicling a summer filled with literary adventures and memorable achievements.

A Timeless Appeal in a Digital Age

April Sheris deeply values the simplicity and beauty of analog storytelling, and the Little Listener’s Crate reflects this passion. In an era dominated by digital distractions, this carefully crafted box encourages intentional, focused interactions between parent and child. The subtle yet significant impact of pairing storytelling with music helps children to slow down, listen deeply, and engage emotionally—qualities increasingly rare yet profoundly valuable in today’s fast-paced world.

By fostering moments of stillness and reflection, the crate helps nurture empathy, patience, and creative thinking. These invaluable skills form the foundation for a child’s emotional intelligence and intellectual growth, making the crate not just an entertainment tool, but a profound educational resource disguised in delightful packaging.

We had the privilege of interviewing April Sheris. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

My name is April Sheris, and I tell stories for a living—sometimes with paper, sometimes with tea, sometimes with sound. I am the founder of Upland Studios, a publishing house turned storytelling atelier that includes bespoke books, immersive literary experiences, and cultural products like the Little Listener’s Crate. I live at the intersection of luxury and literature, where every story is treated like an heirloom and every reader like a collector of worlds.

Please tell us about Little Listener’s Crate

Rather than a single book, I’ve published a constellation of voices. But our newest creation—the Little Listener’s Crate—is a lyrical blend of children’s literature and vinyl-inspired ambiance. It includes titles like Germaine the Beetle, A Journey for Felix, and A Race to Believe In, each paired with curated soundtracks and a reading passport for young listeners. It’s a literary mixtape for children—designed to feel like a treasure chest from a poetic childhood.

Please share your journey with our readers.

My journey began in quiet libraries and dusty bookstores, dreaming up lives that didn’t yet exist. I started publishing over a decade ago with a single belief: stories could heal, connect, and elevate. What began as indie publishing grew into a cultural studio—championing underrepresented voices, turning books into experiences, and crafting something so beautiful it felt like a love letter to readers. I’ve walked this path with wonder, resilience, and the belief that the right story always finds its way home.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Three key ingredients: reverence, rhythm, and risk. I treat storytelling with deep reverence—like jazz or architecture, it must be designed with care. I build rhythm into everything, from how a book is laid out to how a campaign moves through the seasons. And I take risks—I launch what doesn’t exist yet, trusting my intuition more than the market. I also collaborate intentionally—surrounding myself with creators who dream in color and build with heart.

Any message for our readers?

You are the curators of your own narrative. Whether you’re nine or ninety, the books you read, the music you play, the art you collect—they form your personal museum of self. Let it be rich, let it be tender, let it be bold. And never underestimate the power of a well-told story—it might just be the spark that shifts your world.

Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
