In a world filled with uncertainty, knowing how to defend yourself effectively is invaluable. Dr. Antonio N. Sherman’s innovative book, Take-5 Self-defense Concept: Nikida’s Mudo-Kan Waza-Ryu Martial Art, dives deep into this essential life skill with clarity and precision. Sherman offers a revolutionary approach, transforming complex martial arts into a swift and practical system anyone can master.
Understanding the “Take-5” Philosophy
Dr. Sherman, with an extensive background in martial arts and personal security, recognized the pitfalls of rigid training methods. He emphasizes flexibility and responsiveness rather than adhering strictly to traditional techniques. His core principle? If a defensive action takes longer than five seconds, it’s too long. Sherman’s “Take-5” approach underscores the urgency of ending confrontations quickly, decisively, and safely.
With decades of experience serving in the U.S. Army and in high-level executive protection roles, Sherman knows firsthand the realities of unpredictable threats. His teachings focus on real-life scenarios, preparing individuals not for stylized combat but for practical, instantaneous response. He asserts clearly—attackers don’t follow scripted patterns, and neither should your defense.
This concise approach is backed by rigorous field testing. Sherman himself, alongside active security professionals, evaluated the effectiveness of “Take-5” in actual protection assignments. The feedback consistently highlighted its practicality and speed. In high-pressure situations, hesitation can be fatal; Sherman’s system eliminates indecision.
Why Practicality Trumps Tradition

Drawing from his multifaceted experience—including executive protection for dignitaries and global military service—Sherman distills decades of expertise into accessible knowledge. The core takeaway is clear: self-defense effectiveness hinges on adaptability, speed, and decisiveness. It’s less about perfect execution and more about swift, confident action under pressure.
His impressive list of qualifications, from FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute training to advanced tactical handgun proficiency and close-quarter combat skills, reinforces the credibility of his approach. Sherman’s methods aren’t speculative—they’re battle-tested and proven effective repeatedly across diverse scenarios.

We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Antonio N. Sherman. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Dr. Antonio, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hello, I am a multi-talented artist, a retired U.S. Army veteran, and an active executive protection specialist. Additionally, I am an accomplished martial artist and a published author in various genres.
Please tell us about your book.
As a dedicated martial artist, I am deeply committed to the arts, having studied both foreign and domestic styles, both as a fighter and a teacher. I have learned not to confine myself to one particular style of fighting or art form, as doing so imposes limitations instead of providing freedom. Relying strictly on established boundaries and guidelines can be counterproductive, especially since real-world threats do not adhere to predictable patterns. This rigidity can render years of training ineffective. Survival doesn’t solely favor the fittest; it favors those who are prepared.
As a trained executive protection specialist, it is vital that I am confident in my skills during close-quarters combat (CQC). If I have to think about what to do in a critical moment, it’s already too late; I would be playing catch-up.
I must emphasize that the “Take-5” concept of self-defense has been evaluated in real-world situations by both myself and other active protection specialists. The “Take-5” concept suggests that any engagement in hand-to-hand combat should be resolved as quickly as possible. Each aspect of this concept is designed to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
Please share your journey with our readers.
Honestly, that’s the subject of my next book. It’s not solely about the destination; it’s about everything that happens along the way. Moreover, my journey is still in progress.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The strategies that have helped me the most are discipline and passion. I never view a closed door as a dead end. If a door closes, I look for a window; if a window closes, I search for another door; and if both are closed, I forge my own path.
Any message for our readers?
For the martial arts audience, this book explores the freedom of expression within the martial arts. However, there’s also a section included that speaks to others—prepare yourself; it’s impactful.
Never give up on your dreams. Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. It’s your dream, not theirs, and don’t let anyone dictate what success means to you.
Thank you so much, Dr. Antonio, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
