Explore Declan James Mullan’s ‘CARE’: A Fast-Paced Journey through Ethical Dystopia

CARE: Unmasking the Price of Unity

Declan James Mullan’s debut novel, CARE, invites readers into a captivating yet unsettling future shaped by the authoritarian Unison Trust. The setting—a transformed Great Britain and Ireland, now called the United Isles of Britannus and Hibernus—has seemingly healed from a catastrophic global pandemic under strict governance. Yet beneath the surface of technological wonders and carefully managed peace lies a disturbing truth waiting to be unveiled.

Scott Hunter’s Dual Reality

Central to this gripping narrative is Scott Hunter, whose life is a compelling paradox of privilege and struggle. Born within society’s elite, Scott navigates daily life with cerebral palsy, assisted by his sophisticated android companion, DEC-E. His unique perspective fuels an innate curiosity, driving him to question the supposed utopia built by the Unison Trust.

Scott’s journey is far from straightforward. It is through his keen observation and quiet defiance that readers gain insight into the deep-seated flaws within his society. Every encounter Scott has reveals a delicate tension—between reliance on technology and the vulnerability of human connections.

Ethical Dilemmas: Technology and Humanity

At its essence, CARE explores critical ethical questions about artificial intelligence and its complex relationship with humanity. As Scott delves deeper into the mysteries around him, readers confront stark questions about autonomy, identity, and ethical boundaries. What happens when the machines we create blur the line between utility and consciousness?

Mullan’s narrative challenges the reader to contemplate these uncomfortable yet vital questions. He thoughtfully explores whether humanity’s reliance on technology could inadvertently erase the very essence of human freedom and self-expression. This delicate interplay between innovation and morality serves as the narrative’s backbone, raising poignant debates about the price society might pay for technological progress.

Personal Influence and Authenticity

Mullan’s personal background significantly enriches the narrative’s authenticity. Growing up amid Northern Ireland’s deep divisions, he understands firsthand the subtle nuances of societal fracture. These experiences translate vividly onto the page, depicting a believable and compelling dystopian society.

Mullan’s professional journey adds another layer of depth to his storytelling. His years as a care assistant, providing vital support to vulnerable individuals, instilled a profound empathy clearly reflected in Scott Hunter’s interactions and internal struggles. This genuine compassion for human experience enhances the realism of the narrative, grounding speculative fiction in relatable, emotional truth.

Moreover, Mullan’s varied experiences—as a multimedia designer, teacher, and EAL specialist—also uniquely shape his storytelling. His narrative benefits from his broad visual imagination and a deep understanding of diverse perspectives. Through these layers, Mullan crafts a story that is immersive and emotionally resonant, combining speculative fiction with vivid, relatable human experiences.

Beyond the Story: The Author’s World

Beyond the gripping narrative, the author’s life offers fascinating context. Declan James Mullan resides in Thailand, enriching his worldview through cross-cultural experiences as an educator. This exposure to diverse perspectives undoubtedly influences the inclusive, empathetic tone of his writing.

His deep connection to animals is evident in his personal life, with the adoption of three rescue dogs—Chubs, Rocky, and Anna—showcasing his compassionate nature, echoed throughout his novel. His family’s influence is equally profound; moments spent with his daughter Clodagh and wife Fon provide a foundation of warmth and authenticity that permeates his creative work.

CARE is available through Amazon in Kindle, hardcover, and paperback editions, opening its doors to readers worldwide.

An Unforgettable Journey

Declan James Mullan’s CARE is more than a dystopian novel—it’s a thoughtful examination of humanity’s future, challenging readers to consider the true costs of societal unity and technological advancement. Through Scott Hunter’s eyes, readers are prompted to examine their own values about freedom, identity, and ethical responsibility.

With striking depth and vivid emotional resonance, CARE navigates the fragile intersection of humanity and technology, serving as both a cautionary tale and an inspiring narrative about resilience and awakening. For readers intrigued by the complexities of an uncertain future, CARE delivers an unforgettable journey, blending powerful speculative ideas with deeply human insights.

We had the privilege of interviewing Declan James Mullan. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am a primary teacher living in Thailand specializing in EAL English. I have also worked as a freelance designer for many years, mostly in 3D, graphics, illustration, animation, and video.

Please tell us about your book.

My debut novel, CARE, unexpectedly grew from a simple idea: to explore my formative experiences growing up amidst Northern Ireland’s deep political divisions and my early career as a care provider. During these impactful times, observing conflict and vulnerability firsthand profoundly shaped the story. Somewhere along the way, that short story morphed into a sprawling dystopian sci-fi novel. I found myself building a futuristic world, reimagining Northern Ireland as ‘Ulsteria’ to explore themes of society, humanity, and our future. It’s been quite a journey, and I hope CARE sparks interesting conversations for you, the reader.

Please share your journey with our readers.

I was born in London, England, but grew up in Northern Ireland in the 90s, which was the tail end of the conflict. I saw what real political and religious division can do to a country living in a divided city with segregated communities. It was during university that I first worked as a care assistant at a nursing home. After completing my master’s degree, I moved to London to work in the design industry, which didn’t work out as I had hoped, so I moved back home and got a job working as a dementia care assistant. From here, I moved on to work in community care and then student support at a university. This led me to education, and I find myself today working as a teacher in Thailand.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The most important thing is never to be afraid to fail. I was once terrified of failure; then, I failed over and over again. Each time, I learned valuable lessons. Now, if I want to do something, I just go for it.

Any message for our readers?
