Carlos and His Journey to a Second Chance
Carlos has lived a life filled with challenges that shaped him into the creator he is today. Before celebrating his 18th birthday, he spent his entire childhood and teen years managing sickle cell disease. It’s a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells, often causing severe pain, anemia, and risk of serious complications. For Carlos, the pain was part of everyday life.
His grandmother Crystal remembers the earliest signs when he was only 10 months old. His family didn’t yet understand sickle cell, but the fear and helplessness were real as they watched a baby in pain without knowing what to do. Around his first birthday, Carlos received his diagnosis and began lifelong care with Dr. Mukund Dole at Dayton Children’s Hospital.
Everything changed in March 2025. Carlos became one of the first people in the nation to receive CASGEVY, a groundbreaking gene therapy made possible through a collaboration between Dayton Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The treatment opened the door to a life free from the constant pain he had carried since infancy. For Carlos, turning 18 meant stepping into adulthood with a sense of relief, freedom, and hope that many people with sickle cell never experience.
He credits both hospitals for giving him what he describes as “the opportunity of a literal lifetime.” With his health restored, he gained precious time to chase his dream. That dream began in 2022, when he started writing the story that would become Spirit King Kai: Reincarnated. By mid-2024, he completed it. His next wish is to share it with the world and see it adapted into a comic or graphic novel. He hopes to find an artist or organization with both the skill and passion to help bring Karuro’s journey to life visually.
