Kicks and Goals: How Sia Bharadwaj is Fighting to Make Soccer More Diverse and Inclusive

In the world of sports, where determination and talent are celebrated, one teen is working tirelessly to ensure that every girl, regardless of her background, has the chance to shine. Meet Sia Bharadwaj, the founder of Kicks and Goals, a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote soccer and increase diversity within the sport. Sia’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to breaking down barriers that prevent girls from pursuing their dreams in sports.

A Passion Ignited: Sia’s Early Journey

Sia Bharadwaj was born and raised in San Ramon, California, where her love for soccer began at the tender age of eight. From the moment she first kicked a soccer ball, Sia knew she had found her passion. But as a young girl of South Asian descent, she quickly noticed something troubling—there were very few people who looked like her on the soccer field. This realization, coupled with the challenges she faced as a minority athlete, sparked a determination in Sia that would shape her future.

Growing up, Sia encountered numerous obstacles that many athletes of color experience. From subtle microaggressions to outright discrimination, she was often made to feel like an outsider in a sport she loved. These experiences could have discouraged her, but instead, they fueled her resolve to succeed and to create change. Sia recognized that the lack of diversity in soccer was not just a personal challenge but a systemic issue that needed to be addressed.

The Birth of Kicks and Goals: A Vision for Inclusion

Sia’s experiences on the soccer field led her to create Kicks and Goals, an organization dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in sports. The vision behind Kicks and Goals is simple yet profound: to provide opportunities for young girls from all backgrounds to participate in soccer and other sports, regardless of their ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or circumstances.

Through Kicks and Goals, Sia aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where young girls can develop their skills, build confidence, and find a sense of belonging. The organization offers a range of programs, including soccer clinics, mentorship opportunities, and community outreach initiatives, all designed to inspire and empower the next generation of female athletes.

Sia believes that every girl deserves the chance to play, and she is committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent girls from pursuing their dreams in sports. By creating a space where diversity is celebrated and inclusion is the norm, Kicks and Goals is helping to reshape the narrative in the sports world—one where girls from all walks of life can thrive and succeed.

The Challenges of Microaggressions in Sports

While Sia’s journey has been marked by success and achievement, it has also been fraught with challenges. One of the most significant obstacles she and other athletes of color face is the pervasive issue of Microaggressions in sports. These subtle, often unintentional acts of discrimination can have a profound impact on an athlete’s mental health, self-worth, and overall performance.

Microaggressions can take many forms, from racial stereotypes to unfair treatment by coaches or teammates. For athletes of color, these experiences can create a hostile environment that goes beyond the physical demands of the sport. The cumulative effect of microaggressions can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, and a constant need to prove oneself.

In Sia’s case, these challenges only reinforced her commitment to creating change. She recognized the need for greater awareness, understanding, and reform in the sports world. Through Kicks and Goals, Sia is not only providing opportunities for young girls but also advocating for a more inclusive and respectful sports culture.

Empowering the Future: A Call to Action

Sia Bharadwaj’s story is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and the desire to create positive change. Through Kicks and Goals, she is breaking down barriers and empowering young girls to pursue their dreams in sports, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

But Sia’s work is far from done. She believes that real change requires a collective effort from everyone involved in the sports community. Coaches, athletes, and organizations must take proactive measures to confront and eliminate instances of microaggressions and discrimination. By fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and diversity, we can create a sports environment where every athlete has the opportunity to succeed and be recognized for their talents.

Sia’s story is not just about soccer—it’s about the broader fight for equality and inclusion in all aspects of life. Through her work with Kicks and Goals, she is inspiring a new generation of female athletes to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue their dreams with confidence and determination.

As Sia continues her mission, she invites others to join her in creating a world where every girl has the chance to play, succeed, and make her mark in the sports world. Together, we can build a future where diversity is celebrated, and every athlete, regardless of their background, is given the opportunity to shine.

Our mission is to break down barriers and create a world where every girl, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to pursue her dreams in sports.

Please tell us more about you and your work.

I was born and raised in San Ramon, California, and my passion for soccer began when I was just eight years old. As a young girl of South Asian descent, I quickly realized that there were not many people who looked like me in the soccer world. Please tell us about your journey.

My journey began with a deep love for soccer, but as I grew up, I encountered challenges that many athletes of color face. Despite these obstacles, I remained committed to my passion and realized that I wanted to do more than just play the sport—I wanted to change it. This led to the creation of Kicks and Goals, where my goal is to empower young girls and create a more inclusive sports environment. The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, as I see the positive impact we’re making in the lives of young athletes.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The strategies that have helped me succeed include perseverance, a strong belief in my mission, and the ability to connect with others who share my vision. I’ve also focused on creating a supportive community around Kicks and Goals, where everyone is committed to breaking down barriers in sports. Additionally, being adaptable and open to learning has allowed me to navigate the challenges and continue growing the organization.
