Richard N James delivers a captivating narrative in The Immortals: Book 7 in the Dog Rescue Series, a novel that blends speculative science with raw human emotion. The story follows Bobby Link, a man whose life has been reshaped by an experiment that defies natural laws. After entering prison at twenty-six, Bobby walks out more than four decades later with the same youthful appearance. Time has moved on, yet his body has not.
This unusual reality stems from the Immortality Project, a secret and controversial experiment aimed at reversing aging. Bobby is one of its only survivors. Alongside him is Snowman, a loyal white lab who shares the same condition. Together, they become something far more significant than individuals seeking freedom. They hold the key to a discovery that powerful forces are desperate to control.
Richard introduces this concept with a steady hand, allowing readers to settle into the world before the tension rises. The idea of immortality feels both fascinating and unsettling, creating a strong foundation for the story that follows.
The Weight of Time on an Unchanged Body
Bobby stands as one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. His physical appearance suggests youth, yet his mind carries decades of confinement and hardship. This contrast shapes every decision he makes. He reacts quickly, moves efficiently, and remains alert, shaped by years of surviving in a controlled environment.
As Bobby steps into a world that has evolved without him, he faces more than physical danger. He must understand new systems, unfamiliar technology, and a society that feels distant. His journey becomes deeply personal, reflecting the challenge of finding purpose in a life that has been disrupted.
Snowman plays an essential role in this journey. The dog offers companionship, trust, and a sense of grounding. Their bond grows stronger as the story unfolds, giving readers moments of warmth amid the tension. Through Snowman, the narrative highlights loyalty and connection, themes that run throughout Richard’s work.
A Dangerous Pursuit in a Modern Landscape
The story gains momentum through the relentless pursuit led by Alexander King, a billionaire driven by fear of mortality. King views Bobby as a solution to his greatest fear. He sees potential, profit, and control. Bobby becomes a target, valued for what he represents rather than who he is.
Richard builds the narrative around this chase, taking readers across the American Midwest. Each setting contributes to the atmosphere, from isolated locations to the vivid stretch of the Route 44 corridor. The environments feel alive, adding depth to the unfolding events.
Technology plays a significant role in shaping the conflict. Surveillance systems track movement, limit options, and create constant pressure. Bobby’s fight for freedom becomes more complex as every step is watched. The sense of being hunted remains present, keeping readers engaged from start to finish.
Guidance from a scientist connected to the experiment adds another layer to the story. These moments provide insight into the choices that led to the project and the consequences that followed. They also introduce a sense of accountability, reminding readers that scientific progress carries responsibility.
The Creative Vision Behind the Series
Richard N James brings a thoughtful perspective to his writing, shaped by years of experience as an educator. With thirty-eight years spent teaching at both secondary and post-secondary levels, he understands how to present ideas in a clear and engaging way. After retirement, he turned his focus toward storytelling, combining his love for writing with his passion for rescue dogs.
Richard has written nine books, including Marko: Dog of War – Extended Theatrical Version and Love in the Dark: A Story of Rescue, Recovery and Unconditional Love. His stories often center on resilience, second chances, and the powerful relationships between humans and animals. These themes are present throughout The Immortals, adding emotional depth to the fast-moving plot.
Beyond writing, Richard enjoys staying active and has a strong interest in hockey, having played in a local league well into his late fifties. This sense of discipline and dedication reflects in his storytelling approach, which remains focused and engaging.
