Meet Theodore: The Imaginative Author Behind Sunlight
Behind the delightful tale of Sunlight’s Adventure is the enthusiastic young author, Theodore Martin, whose real-life experiences enrich every page. As a primary school student living on a farm, Theodore shares a close bond with animals—especially his beloved chickens and horses. His everyday interactions and observations on the farm serve as genuine inspiration for his storytelling.
Sunlight isn’t just a character created from imagination; she’s Theodore’s favorite hen, known for her funny behaviors and endless curiosity. Theodore’s adventures in homeschooling allowed him ample time to observe Sunlight closely, capturing her quirky traits and turning them into the captivating narrative that readers now enjoy.
Creating the book involved more than just writing. Theodore was encouraged and supported by his mom, who helped connect him with an illustrator from the Netherlands and arranged professional editing. Thanks to this collaborative effort, Theodore’s imaginative story became a beautifully illustrated and professionally published book, now proudly available on Amazon and featured in various school libraries.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Theodore Martin. I’m a primary school student who loves animals, especially chickens and horses. I have two horses, Rosie and Otto, whom I ride at home on the farm and at Pony Club events. I have 15 chickens who are fun to watch. They do funny things and are always discovering new places to scratch and lay eggs. My favourite chickens are the ones that let me pick them up and carry them around as I explore.
Please tell us about your journey.
During our homeschooling time, I spent lots of time with my chickens and loved watching them. They would peck my legs and follow me around. As a project, we had to write and publish a story for English, so I decided to write about my favourite chicken, Sunlight. She was always running around doing silly things and made me laugh a lot. So I wrote a story about all the adventures she got up to. My mum then found someone to edit the story and draw illustrations for the book so we could publish it on Amazon.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
My teacher helped me by asking me to tell her the story and recording it. Then we listened to the recording, and I wrote down the story. She said it was very important to edit the story, so we did lots of editing in class, and I drew pictures for the story. I had to stay focused and keep working on my story so I could read it to the class at the end of the project. Sometimes I didn’t want to do the work, but my mum and my teacher kept me motivated, and I’m glad that I finished the story. My mum then helped me publish it on Amazon, and now it’s in my school library and in some libraries in the Netherlands (where the illustrator lives).
Any message for our readers
If you love animals and especially chickens, then please enjoy my story. Chickens are fun, and did you know they have a tongue!
Thank you so much, Theodore, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
