Vanity is a peek into the behind the scenes work of Black beauty. Although Black beauty is consumed and imitated in popular culture, the work that goes into it is often overlooked. Vanity displays the work that goes into Black beauty, and also presents the argument that vanity is a radical form of self care for Black women. Shopping at the beauty supply for eye lashes, deep conditioning your hair, getting a manicure, or putting on a full face of make up is a radical form of self care for Black women. Black women are often socialized to prioritize others over themselves, but these things are a clear prioritization of oneself. Engaging in vanity and self indulgence is radical, and I hope Vanity as a project encourages others to radically care for themselves to the best of their ability.
